Searching for a splatter screen that lasts!

We must be on our third splatter screen and it too is coming apart. None of these were made well. The screen comes apart from the rim within six months. Has anyone found one that doesn't come apart readily?

Secondly, have any of you tried the silicon types. Do they work? Seems to me steam wouldn't be able to escape easily.

I found an earlier post here about splatter screens, but the information wasn't really adequate; it was an old post from 2007. I'd sure appreciate your input. Thanks

I also would like to find one that doesn't fall apart and keeps the grease from spattering. The ones I have found do not contain the spatters very well.

Best one I have found I got from Williams & Sonoma, it is the one with a carbon filter sandwiched between 2 screens.
So very little spatter gets through, it supposed to cut down on smells also not sure if that works in the slightest and personally I do not care one bit. I WANT to smell my food.

Had for I think 4 years so far.

In order to have photos appear within your posts, you first need to upload them from your computer to an online storage facility. PhotoBucket.com is a decent photo album storage place. There are others. A quick Google search should help you out. Then, once you have signed up for the photo service, which should be free, you upload your photos to your created album, and use the HTML coding provided to copy and paste them here. There should be instructions here at GW for using photos in your posts, so you could always refer to that. As for fir bark size, this is what I use... although, I don't need to make large batches at one time... This is ZooMed ReptiBark, fir bark reptile bedding. I use it right out of the bag... Next to the bag of ReptiBark, there's a bag of Manna Pro poultry grit pictured, which are the granite chips I use. This is a picture of the ingredients I use in my rendition of Al's Gritty Mix... starting left/top and working clockwise, they are turface, perlite, ReptiBark, and granite chips... These are a few young orchids in the mix I make, this version containing more bark... This is a Hippeastrum bulb planted in a slightly different version... And more bulbs in the same mix... A Sans in the Gritty Mix... Particle size is important, so you want to work with ingredients that are rather comparable in size, though they don't have to be perfectly the same. Once you understand the concept of the mix... the "how & why" of it... and you understand what each ingredient brings to the mix, what it's purpose is... it all comes together, and you can either use the 511 or the Gritty Mix as the recipes are, or you can tweak them to fit your own uses. I hope this helps you somewhat... fir bark particles in the size we're looking for are sometimes difficult to locate. This is why I use the ReptiBark, though it's more expensive. For me, it's available locally. Bonsai or orchid growers sometimes carry bulk or bagged fir bark in good sizes... and I know there's a thread floating around the Container Gardening Forum on locating the necessary items. I wish I could help you further... I'm sure others will be along to give more information, though. Hang in there! :-)

We have purchased the Sierra Designs Bedouin 6 tent off Ebay for $183.00. I've set it up inside our garden room and there's room for four large ThermaRest pads and room to cruise up the middle. The tent is only 8 square feet larger in area than our SD Base Camp '88 model, but the headroom is over six feet so it feels a lot larger. I really like the bends in the X-poles and the as-always top-shelf quality of Sierra Designs products. I counted 27 different pockets in the tent, really like the adjustable clothesline too. There are three different dual cupholders attached to the tent, they are mesh and also have small pockets above them. The dual vestibules are a nice feature that the Agnes Big House didn't offer. Brow poles make them possible and don't require stooping for entry like most vestibules. The amount of mesh is just right, there's ventilation but with the fly there is heat retention as well. We're taking it into the back country next month for camping in the Laguna Mountains.

search option gives blank screen

It is still going on ; I'm just wondering if the problem is at my end or this end. I keep trying to "search" the forums, only to come up with a blank screen. It is not just you and the problem is not on your end. I am having the same thing on some of the forums. I'm not sure if it is all of them or not. If I go to the Seed Exchange, and just put by name in the search box below the list of threads, it brings up all of my posts there. If I add a second word to the search to narrow it, it comes up with a blank screen and there is no scroll bar to the right at all. Sue

Depending on the dish, you may find that using a rondeau or dutch oven is helpful in reducing the grease spatter when sautÃÂ©ing. The higher walls block more of it than low skillets or sautÃÂ© pans. You just want to make sure that the meat isn't crowded but also that the surface area of the pan isn't so large that it makes it difficult to make a pan sauce. That, in combination with the screen, may work for you. I'm 44 and have only taken a real interest in cooking within the last couple of years. I could cook and everything tasted good, with only a few fails! I didn't think it was fun, though. I've become BBSTX's second paragraph! I bake the sandwich bread (among other things) for the kids because I read the label - yuck. I can't get one to eat anything but soft white and I refuse to buy that crud, so I make a really yummy alternative. I make my own mayo, also because I read the label, LOL! Ridiculously easy if you have an immersion blender. And I don't have a jar sitting around forever because I make a cup at a time, when needed. Really, I was bored with the drudgery that feeding 5 people had become and needed an injection of creativity. I love to try new things and my family is moderately adventurous so now I actually like to cook. At least, when I'm trying out a new recipe or have a new piece of equipment. Oh, and I like really tasty food without the cost of eating out. I recommend checking out Ina Garten's cookbooks from your library. The pictures are gorgeous, which helps pique interest, and the recipes are almost fool-proof. Everything I've tried has been delicious. I've learned a lot about equipment and ingredients here and at Chowhound. Learning about and using tools that help me succeed has made a big difference for me because I LIKE tools. You can work with anything, but I want things that make it easier!

Just saw a silicon one - might look for one for myself as I hate the big giant one I have now.
Like the carbon filter idea - is it easy to clean?

Hi Nunyabiz,

I'm impressed that the splatter screen you suggested from William-Sonoma lasted four years. It doesn't look much different than the one I have that's on its last legs. It seems that they can't take hand washing. Pressure on it makes the screen come out. I don't use enough dishes every day to put it in the dishwasher every time I use it. I'm going to order one cause I can't find anything else, so thanks for the tip.

Regarding the silicon splatter screens, the only one I saw was very large and you may not like the size. And, why is virtually eveything made in China? Use to be we in the U.S. made the very BEST and now we have to purchase junk from out of the country. Sigh . . .

Well it has worked well for us.
Couple of points, dont expect it to stop odors because it doesn't that I can tell.
All I cared about is that it stopped grease spatters and the carbon filter in it seems to do that fine.
Screen by itself is worthless to stop spatters.

Second, on the 2 bars that go across the top, I would take a pair of pliers and crimp the ends that go into the outer edge a bit more. One of the bars came out on ours after a year or so and that is what I did and haven't had a problem since.

I don't put mine in the dishwasher after every use, I imagine if I did then it wouldn't have lasted 4+ years so far.
I just stick in there once every month or two.
If you want to clean it that often, then use dawn dish washing liquid on a rag, wipe it down and then spray it with hot water and let it drain setting sideways in the sink.
the carbon filter takes awhile to dry.
