What Bosch / Thermador / Gaggenau appliances should we consider?

DH and I plan to remodel our kitchen soon. His mom works for a BSH company and she can get a discount on appliances. Her discount for Bosch is 30-40%. She is not sure of the discount for Thermador, Gagg or Siemens. I need to give her a list of possible appliances from those companies for her to get prices.

We are looking for an induction cooktop, single 30" convection wall oven, microwave / speedoven combo (I'm not sure BSH makes one of those; I may buy another Advantium if they do not look too funny together), refrigerator, undercounter wine storage and dishwasher. We do not need to buy all our appliances through BSH, but if we can get a few good ones with a nice discount, that would be great.

I am interested in the Gagg induction cooktop with the control knob, although we will also request prices for the Thermador units. I am also considering the Thermador Freedom columns or 42" built-in fridge. Are the Bosch or Thermador wall ovens any good? I doubt we can spring for the Gagg oven, even with the discount, plus the side opening door, while cool, makes it harder to pair with an Advantium. I have seen mixed reviews on Bosch dishwashers, but are there models worth considering? (We need a very quiet DW with flexible loading capacity.)

Thanks, Deeageaux. I have been considering Liebherr refrigeration, so I am glad to hear you think the BSH units are as good or better.

I am still toying with the idea of a high-powered gas range, which I have drooled over for years, but with 2 small children induction is probably safer. Thermador makes a few nice looking hoods; I haven't looked at the less expensive Bosch options yet.

I am considerering the Bosch DW you mentioned, as well as the SHX68E15UC 800 plus series DW with hidden controls.

I asked for the price on the M301ES Masterpiece Series 30Ã¢ÂÂ Single Wall Oven. I do not see DM301ES on the Thermador website. We had an Advantium OTR in our last house, and I am considering getting another one to act as a second oven the few times a year we need one, as well as an everyday microwave. We might just get a basic microwave instead.

I have a smaller, Euro version of the Gaggenau induction. I love it!! I don't know that there's anything better in the cooking about it. It has great features, but so do others. The knob is fantastic, however, especially because you can go from O straight to 9. I thought when I did a demo at the store with the full sized model that the element stayed selected until one changed. On mine, it stays selected for enough time to make an adjustment, but you have to reselect for the next adjustment. I don't know if I was playing too much in the demo, if that's an old style, or if there's a difference between the U.S. and Euro or different sizes. That's the only thing I don't like about it!

I'd go with the funny looking oven to have the Gaggenau oven, but if the discounted price is too much, it's too much. I think the previous model was a bit better, but the current one is still one of the very best ovens you can buy.

Between the two, if getting the Thermador induction allowed you to get the Gaggenau oven, I'd do it. The knob is just nice, not essential.

Thanks for the info, Plllog. I think it was your reviews that convinced me to go for the Gagg induction for the handy knob rather than the touch pad controls. I am interested to know that you would choose the Gagg oven and Thermador induction over the opposite combo, if price does not allow Gagg for both. I will request prices for both options and see what we can swing.

Which oven model do you have? Does it have a rotisserie and do you find that feature useful?

I actually like the side opening door on the Gagg ovens, it just makes it harder to pair with a microwave or speedoven from a different brand. Space contraints require us to stack the ovens rather than put them in separate areas.

We landed at Thermador through a bit of a roundabout route. Our kitchen designer had originally recommended the Gaggenau wall oven because the side swing door provided meaningful utility in our prior layout (the new layout will work OK with either style door). We had decided we wanted an induction cooktop and he recommended the Gaggenau induction cooktop because of its fairly shallow depth. We then went to a BSH showroom and took a look at both the Gaggenau and Thermador induction cooktops. We couldn't find enough functionality difference in the cooktop to support the significant price differential (the magnetic knob was neat but we are confident we can live without it) so decided to drop down to the Thermador cooktop. (We had also looked at Monogram, but shied away from the required 12" deep clearance to combustibles that unit requires). We liked the high power, available boost on all zones and generally low power sharing that the Thermador induction cooktop provides. We had separately decided on the Bosch 800 series dishwasher because of the top Consumer Reports ratings, the now available cutlery rack and reasonable price compared to most of the Miele dishwashers. Having then dropped down to the Thermador cooktop, on one of our final visits to the local appliance store, the sales person with whom we were dealing (who is excellent and knows his stuff cold) mentioned that if we were going to get a Bosch dishwasher and Thermador cooktop, we might consider the Thermador oven and dishwasher since the Thermador dishwasher is basically the same as the Bosch dishwasher. That's about as far as we've gotten. If there's another route we should be considering, nothing is locked in stone except: we would like a very good dishwasher (doesn't have to be the world's best, but very good and quiet is a requirement), we would like a 36" induction cooktop, we would like a good double wall oven and the double wall oven doesn't need any microwave functionality since we're getting the Advantium.

We got our appliances on an employee discount also. We decided to get everything from Thermador. We've been using them for about 3 weeks now. Here are my reactions: Dishwasher DWHD650GPR Very nice - dishes are very clean and I adore the top third rack. However, my old Bosch had a much shorter cycle which I miss (it was called Optimizer - I didn't even investigate Bosch this time around and maybe I should have....) The discount is so good though that it was cheaper for me to have a panel made than to get the stainless steel. Thermador columns - with panels, and water/ice in the door. These are amazing - I LOVE them - the shallow fridge shelves are great - nothing gets lost, the milk can be on the door, it just feels spacious. However.... the panels were a huge headache to design (and they are being rebuilt as we speak), and installing the units is expensive and difficult - everybody hates to install them, so if you go this route call around to get a few opinions on the best installer. This is also the worst discount - you'll get a great price, but it's not as much of a discount. If you decide to get custom panels, please feel free to get in touch and I'll share my new knowledge. Stove -SGSX365FS I really like the stove - ours is a gas cooktop and this was the best discount - about 45% off of the appliance store price. It's easy to clean and super powerful. I'm still learning not to burn things like pancakes. Ovens -ME302EP we got double ovens w/ True convection on the top and no convection on the bottom - they are well laid out - I don't yet have an opinion on their functionality, but there are a ton of options and reading the instructions is necessary. The discount is better with the Masterpiece handle than it is with the professional handle, but the professional went better with our hardware. Microwave - MCES We also got the surround for the built in microwave and I really hate it - it's huge! The discount is good and it works fine, but it's not very pretty. Ours is under the counter so it's less of an issue, but I don't know if I would buy it again even with the great discount. I called the customer service line a couple of times to make sure I was ordering the correct parts so I could feel really confident when I ordered and everything came in just fine (and very quickly). dbabrams, When I first picked up all my appliances there were several features that geared me towards Miele. The kitchen design called for a flush mount, and at that time, Subzero did not offer the flush mount refrigerators, basically their fridge and freezers stuck out a bit from the rest of the cabinets, because of the way their door hinges worked, so I picked Miele instead. Now I believe Subzero offers the flush ones. Also Miele offered any combination of fridge freezer because they sell them separate. I ended up getting a 36" fridge and a 36" freezer and Subzero did not have that option. I appreciate the huge space these units offer but frankly, the ones that are not flush from Subzero are much deeper than the Miele ones. I also thought about the combi steam oven and at the time of purchase the Miele one was the only one that offered it. Wolf had only a steam oven not the combi one. I got the Miele ovens to match all other appliances, but heard great reviews about Wolf as well.

Glad to see this bumped. My repair person called in advance as promised and was on time for our repair. I ended up with new hinges as well--not sure why. And I got a green "R" sticker inside the dishwasher itself next to the model numbers. I assume to show that the recall repair had been done.

If you are not willing to spend Subzero money on refrigeration I think BSH units are as good as any. Especially with a good discount I would take BSH units over Liebherr.

If you are not going with a high powered gas cooktop/range then BSH ventilation and cooktops are as good as any. Doubly so with a good discount.

If you do not want to spend Miele money on a dishwasher then the BSH units are as good as any. The Bosch Evolution 800 Plus Series SHE68E15UC is the TOL German made unit. Extremely water/energy efficient,40db, built in water softner. Usually goes for a little north of $1500. The others are made in North Carolina. With a healthy discount that becomes very attractive.

I am not a wine storage aficionado but Gaggenau makes one: RW404760.

Again, not expert on speed ovens but Thermador makes them.

Thermador has a single full size convection oven with speed cooking. Thermador Masterpiece DM301ES. I think I rather buy one of these and a regular microwave or drawer microwave.

Are Thermador/Bosch ovens any good? Other than Gagg/Wolf/Miele I think they are as good as any. If not willing to spend that kind of money then BSH with good discount is very attractive.

I have a new Bosch and one of my requirements, when I was
looking for a dishwasher was the sound factor. The print
literature on my Bosch says that it is "virtually silent."
Mine is anything but that. Bosch sent two different service guys to my house and they both told me that my machine is noisy, but I have to accept it, because Bosch will do nothing about, and they won't. I know a lot of owners of older Bosch machines rave about how quiet they are, but the newer machines are not. Mine also does not clean as well as the 30 year old Whirlpool that it replaced. Mine came from NC, and it's an expensive POC

I would get the beautiful Thermador Refrigerator and Freezer Freedom columns. They are very well built. I have a 30" refrigerator and a 24" freezer column (without the external ice machine, as it looks cleaner and better without it). The freezer still has an icemaker inside. But I bought a Scotsman icemaker which the family uses all the time and it makes beautiful ice.

I also bought the top of the line Thermador induction cooktop and couldn't be more pleased. The large center burner is the most powerful on the market and can bring to boil water in nothing flat, much quicker than my Miele top of the line I have at my summer house.

I also bought the top of the line Thermador dishwasher, which I am sure is made mostly by Bosch. It is supremely quiet and does an excellent job in cleaning, although sometimes plastic containers don't dry thoroughly, but that is a common problem with most dishwashers, particularly european ones without heating rods.
