Any good deals on Lodge cast iron?

Where do YOU think the best place to buy Lodge cast iron is? I'm interested in a dutch oven. How many quarts do you recommend? I would guess that 5qts is plenty big enough for a family of four, but could you cook for six in it if you were entertaining? Any experiences to be shared would be appreciated!

I've got some great Lodge prices on ebay. Currently ewins_corp has the Lodge Logic 5 qt Dutch oven for $24.99. One thing to keep in mind is that cast iron is heavy, so your shipping charges will add up.

If you live close to or travel by Cracker Barrel restaurants, they sell Lodge cast iron. Very inexpensive as compared to other prices I have seen.

Thanks for the advice! I looked at the Ironworks tub and thought it wouldn't be deep enough (it's 12 5/8" to the overflow). I did just find the Hampshire claw foot tub by Victoria and Albert (water depth is 15 3/4") and it looks like it could work because you can use it as a drop-in as well, without the feet. Does anyone know if the Englishcast material insulates as well as a cast iron tub? The main reason I was looking at cast iron was because I wanted the water to stay hot and the weight wouldn't be an issue since this bathroom is on concrete slab. Seems from the literature that Englishcast is supposed to insulate quite well. Anyone have one of their tubs? They're so pretty I'm now considering changing the bathroom design for a free-standing tub since I love the wooden legs you can use instead of the claw feet. Its under rated I think partially because it's not a high profit item... not seen on any tv shows at all, the price would go way up. I once was in a Fields Store in Chicago and over heard the rave of a German couple here on vacation who were scarfing up on cast iron cookware. The price/performance ratio is about the best of any kitchen item, IMHO. My mom bought much of hers on the Ojibwa Indian reservation in Northern WI, all used. She passed it down to me when it got too heavy for her to handle (in her seventies). It's all well seasoned. I'll be passing it on to my son who already loves cooking with it.. he loves those quesadias and fresh salsa cruda!

Thanks arkansas for posting this. My Aldi store did not have a good selection either. The free shipping got me to purchase it. I ordered it and I will report back when I have used it. I will be doing alot of stove top cooking now that my oven is broken. I want to take my time deciding on a new range - there are so many options. Teresa

I have four LeCrueset enameled cast iron pans and seldom use any of them, the two largest have never been used at all because they are just so heavy. I much prefer the old Griswold and Wagner cast iron I've picked up at yard sales and on-line auctions. Like Plllog, though, I have different pans for different uses. I use the cast iron for my over easy eggs and the cast iron dutch oven for deep frying. The cast iron griddle is for steaks and for baking bread in lieu of a baking stone. We have an enameled Aeternum skillet that Elery loves for omelets and I have those stainless steel All Clad/Calphalon/etc skillets that I bought at auction, I use those for things that need a lot of stirring or that stick, my metal utensils don't ruin those. My biggest enameled dutch oven is a cheap one from Aldi but it works fine for beef stew and swiss steak. I also have a 6 quart Nesco roaster, a crockpot and a pressure cooker, each of those has its own use also. My stockpot/chili pot is a hard anodized Calphalon and all the "anodized" has chipped off the bottom, so it's basically aluminum. Works fine anyway, I really like the short-wide shape so I'm looking at stainless to replace that, eventually. Good luck on that Wagner. Cast iron is often cheaper at local hardware or cooking stores. As PhatCat points out, it's heavy, so a local place that uses truck shipping (buying many items simultaenously) often incurrs less shipping charges than using UPS.

Ace and True Value, which use company trucks, don't care about weight, because they will also be carrying cases of AC filters and light bulbs at the same time, so the weight really make no difference.

I've seen what appear to be excellent prices on Amazon.com. Only $8.99 for a Lodge Logic 10-1/4-Inch Pre-Seasoned Skillet. $26.99 for a Lodge Logic 5-Quart Pre-Seasoned Dutch Oven. With free shipping for purchases of over $25 (only items directly from Amazon.com, not 3rd parties through Amazon.com) it should be even cheaper than eBay. WalMart carries a fairly good selection of Lodge Cast Iron cookware. Sams Club has had sets for sale around the holidays.
