windows XP themes

I started playing around with the XP themes tonight and set mine on aquarium which I quickly got tired of and wanted to just go back to my usual picture on my desktop. I put the picture on the desktop easily, but when I set the aquarium theme it changed my cursor to a seashell and I don't want that now. How do I get the cursor to go back to the usual arrow?

Now is when you should say - why not leave well enough alone? I did - but now I don't want this cursor this way and since I put the theme back to my modified theme I thought it would change everything back to the way I had it...........but no.

Anybody help me with this, please?

Here's the steps to change the pointer theme.

Open the Control Panel by clicking Start, Settings, Control Panel.
Click the "Mouse Icon."
In the Mouse Properties window that appears, click the Pointers tab.
In the area under where it says "Scheme," choose a pointer scheme from the drop-down list.
There are quite a few Pointer Themes to choose
Click Apply
OK to make the change effective

Select the Windows Default option from the drop down menu.

I sometimes speak up concerning others' suggestions that seem like Chicken Little-type fear mongering. I also think too many people have too many unsupported fears of unlikely risks on the internet and from PC use in general. I'm generally in agreement with Kudzu's comments, but let's be realistic - no one knows what the evil doers will do. Using an XP PC on a network that's unconnected to the internet - I'd say zero risk. Use it in full confidence until the hardware dies. Using an XP PC on the internet? Time will tell. Having capable firewalls, updated security software, etc., is a must for all PCs with all operating systems anyway. I have an XP PC that I use very occasionally that has all the protection reasonably available. I'll be sure to remove any personal info and will use it carefully. If I see any hint of odd activity, I'll just replace it. For most PCs old enough to have XP, spending good money to put a newer Windows on old hardware seems a poor choice to me.

Malwarebytes runs when you decide to update and run it. Not entirely accurate. Old updates that may be specific to XP and probably earlier versions.. unless the same packages are also used in newer vista or 7 wont be available for download from microsofts normal servers. I've already hit that wall with something for someone. Found the official Microsoft download page for an item with complete detail and other info but would not download .. pushing download redirects to a page with some text about no longer supported. Most anti-virus companies have stated they will continue supporting XP with their softwares for the near future, if not longer. Last report I saw was something around 30% of world pc's are still XP.. 10% business. Microsoft is selling extended support to business for XP and earning millions, and also to China where 50% of the PC's are XP. jerry- One of the biggest problems I see is people who are continually looking for the best software -- free and paid --that will clean/tweak/fix their computers. Why is this a problem? Because when you fix things that aren't broken, you sometimes make things worse. That's not to say that there aren't some good pieces of freeware out there to deal with specific problems, and I, myself, use free anti-virus and anti-malware. But in 25 years of using and working on computers, I have learned the hard way that doing basic, occasional maintenance using standard tools, like the defrag utility already on your computer, emptying the recycle bin, setting my browser to clear cookies and history each time I shut it down, running regular scans, etc., is typically is enough to keep my computers working just fine. I have worked on the machines of quite a few friends who have overused certain programs and caused problems where none needed to exist. I agree with everyone above who questions the paid-for software one sees on tv, which has messed up many computers. The best investment you can make is to learn and utilize the utilities you already have on your computer, and to use free, reliable, online tools from Microsoft. Microsoft Fix It Solution Center

Thank you so much zep516 - perfect instructions and I'm back to normal. Just couldn't even think with that ship's wheel spinning on the end of my cursor.....I'm so glad to get rid of it. Now, maybe I'll leave well enough alone and be satisfied with just changing my background all the time.

Elaine, I tend to be like you and never investigate the unknowns but that is wrong. These computers contain so things many of us have no idea about. Poking around is a great way to see what else might be there you can use.

Just last week a visitor here was stunned when I brought up the calculator, they had no idea that was possible.

What you could consider is either creating a Restore point just before your experimenting, or if you feel the restore point is not that good use ERUNT linked below. Then you can do your restore point and play to your heart's content feeling safe. If the end result is not what you like simply restore to the way the computer was earlier.

I use ERUNT and it is set to backup the registry every time I start the computer.
I never think to create a restore point before fooling around unless I'm installing something big or experiential.

Not only calculator but the "Star wars movie is here too" not to many know here is how to see it follow instruction carefully this will amaze everyone Here is how to do it:

Click start>click run, now in the run box type cmd, a black window will open with a blinking cursor- now type this in exactly as it appears: telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl hit enter, enjoy the movie kids will love it, not sure if it will work on vista

zep516 - I saw the Star wars movie - amazing to say the least. I'm not exactly a stranger to computers and have certainly spent a lot of time poking around, however I've never fooled with the themes or changing the cursor. Just never interested me before - and to tell the truth - it doesn't interest me now either. I don't like spinning cursors, new desktop background pictures are great, but I had no idea that changing the theme would do anything other than change the background. Now that I've been there, done that - won't be doing it again - easier to just put my own pictures on the desktop. Thanks for all the help, I've done system restores before and that works well - but I knew there had to be a fast little way to get my cursor back. I must look in to that program Erunt - sounds interesting and might be very, very helpful one day.

I wonder how many people will go and see that little Star Wars program, now that you sent us in the right direction.

That's interesting - I don't play solitaire, but I have a friend that does - I'll tell her to try it. I love "hidden object" games and have lots of them installed and waiting to be installed. I can play those silly things for hrs. if I can find the time!
