I find myself "cranky" about having to spend my valuable time learning something new when what I was doing was perfectly fine and suited my needs. AND I would really prefer spending my time doing something else more fun...like quilting or sewing or reading on my kindle or gardening or scrapbooking or cooking or most anything than sitting in front of a computer screen. What was the suffix on the file that was attached to the email? I find it hard to believe a grower would send out Excel forms. These have an .xls suffix. A pdf file would seem more likely and for that you need the Adobe Acrobat Reader or Foxit, both readers are free.

Down here we use open cell above grade and closed cell below Building Science articles do mention both cc and oc being used in attics, but they explicitly recommend cc. See "Unvented Roofs for All Climates" and "Understanding Attic Ventilation" (See Link below.) As I mentioned above, cc is excellent in attics as it acts as a secondary liquid water barrier. At the same time, it is permeable, allowing vapour to move both ways depending on the season. As for "hiding" leaks, I have seen commentary from foam appliers who handle all kinds of foam say that in case of leaks cc focuses the water, so it's easier to spot the source. Because oc foam is more permeable and holds water, the R value is degraded, which means the sheathing is more easily reaching dewpoint, which is not desirable. The same logic applies below grade. The one time I used oc foam, it was applied in cold weather and shrunk back considerably around the rim joists; this is recognized in the literature but brushed off as a minor quibble. When I've used cc foam in basements, rim joists, garage ceilings and attics (but not under the decking) I had none of those problems. I am an adult who was homeschooled almost fifty (egad!) years ago and I think that it would be best to have a separated area for the home school activities. I like the idea of French doors (maybe even Dutch style French doors - does that make them Flemish doors?? - so they could contain the dogs on the lower part but still be opened on top) to set the space apart visually and functionally, even if you leave them open a lot of the time. Although you presently use the room for FR-type activities you may find your kids take a more workman-like approach if the room function is dedicated more to schooling. I think I see a VCR/cable box so I was wondering if you also use the space for after-hours TV viewing. That would be a huge temptation, I think. One of the things that is important for homeschooling is to have some demarcation between your time spent supervising home school and your time spent strictly as a parent. Otherwise it can get very intense. So using spatial cues to reinforce the distinction may help. I know when we had a separate school room for home school it was better and when we homeschooled in the sitting room and dining room it was hard to not have one activity spill into the other. It was much better to have a designated school room where we settled down to work and could also leave things set up on desks and tables for the next session. I'd also vote for putting your desk in there, no matter how functional it looks. That will give you something to do when you kids are working and at the same time they can watch and model your approach to paperwork. Your kids' artwork and maps and posters and natural history specimens will make handsome and stimulating wall decorations. Plus, I'd add a big white board so you could use that space collaboratively to work on problems. Molly
