Does Anyone Have JCPenney's Brand Non-Stick Pans?

I am looking for an inexpensive non-stick 12" skillet. I didn't like anything I saw at Bed Bath & Beyond or Target - either too heavy, too flimsy, or surprisingly expensive! I think 12" pans are typically pretty high-priced.

I saw two 12" non-stick pans at JCPenney, in their "Cooks" line which is the JCPenney house brand. One pan is hard-anodized, and one is tri-ply. The price is great for either of them. Both pans had stickers that said "Whitford Eclipse coating", which I know is just another company's version of Dupont's teflon. But I did a little research, and some blogs and reviews said that the Whitford Eclipse is somewhat superior to Dupont's. I am not expecting years of use; but a couple of years would be nice, and also even heating/cooking would be good too. So I was wondering if anyone has either of these pans (linked below), and could give me feedback. Also, would one of these pans be a better choice than the other?

(Please, no discussions on the dangers of non-stick coatings, or the superiority of cast iron. I have read those other threads. I just want feedback on these non-stick pans, or any other non-stick pans that are reasonably priced. Thanks.)

Almost a year ago I purchased a 10" Cook's non-stick, hard anodized exterior, fry pan. We use it mostly for eggs and cheese, but have cooked other things at times.

It has held up and doesn't have chips or scratches, but I have noticed that it does have some streaking marks that seem to be from the non-metal utensils. I have discovered that some plastic (non-silicon) type utensils are rough on the edges and can make marks or scratches on the non-stick, so have tried to be careful when purchasing any new utensils to use on the non-stick.

I like the weight of the pan and the handle and so far it has worked well for the purpose intended.

I don't have JCPenney's non stick pans, but I do have a set of three non stick skillets from Costco.
They were only $20.00 and I use at least one of them daily.
The finish does get nicked after a few years, but at the low cost, I simply replace the set.
I don't know if Costco is near you, but if so, they are worth a look.

I imagine the kind of pan you were looking for was the old teflon--where have they gone? Teflon is such a horribly dangerous carcinogen that it's been outlawed, FINALLY (after Dupont and the government working hard for decades to keep the public in the dark about just how extremely dangerous the stuff is). You can still get cheap non-stick pans--cast iron. For 10-20 dollars, you'll have a pan that, properly seasoned and maintained, will far surpass the non-stick properties of any chemically applied non-stick surface, AND that will last you the rest of your natural life, and which will be handed down to your grandchildren. Truly, if you have a well-seasoned cast iron skillet, nothing compares. AND it's safe for your family--actually healthy for them because it imparts needed iron into the food you cook (rather than seasoning it with a known carcinogen).

Kinda think ya need a LITTLE oil or butter even in non-stick. Don't know WHAT the coating is on them, but I'd recommend Calphalon non-stick. Not terribly expensive... places like BB&B usually have set of 2 skillets for around $40!?! And treated kindly (no metal tools or VERY gentle with metal), they're NOT thow-aways. Had heard/read about their excellent return/replacement policy and took them up on it last year. Returned favorite sauce pan (easily 15 yo) and 2 skillets (5+ yo?). Sauce pan was showing wear in bottom... wooden tools and/or plactis(?) whisks only. Skillets just weren't as non-stick as had been. Went to their website, filled out some info, printed out a shipping lable, and sent them off... NO receipts required! A week or so later, came home to BRAND NEW replacements at front door. All it cost was shipping.

Oh, for frittatas! That's different! I've never had a non-stick pan that I liked, so was just reading along for information. I've been on an omelette kick recently. It started as experiments with my DeBuyer carbon steel crepe pans. I didn't think I'd like them for eggs because I have a tendency to wiggle them around in the pan and have the best luck with enamel for that (i.e., there's residue, but the eggs still come out, by and large). People were talking in Appliances about using them for breakfasts, and I didn't think they'd be good for eggs in a fry-up. Sure enough, I tried it, and it could have been worse, but the Le Creuset is a lot better. On the other hand, in doing an experiment regarding my induction, when I was feeling horrid and was looking for a soothing greaseball to eat, I made a grilled egg sandwich using a crepe pan for grilling the sandwich and my blini pan for the egg. That is the best sunnyside up egg I've ever made! It was done in butter, but was totally slidy. Into the sandwich without utensil intervention just like the non-sticks do on TV, same for the sandwich itself, even with the contents running all over the pan. So for grins I tried the crepe pans for omelettes and they're great! Best omelettes I've ever made too. The folding has always been my downfall. The low sides and really really smooth surface make it really easy to get the spatula underneath and flip it over. Also, the sharp angle makes for perfectly round eggs, which looks really cool. :) The only downside is that they don't have lids, and the ones I've been using are only a so-so fit. Getting it done just right on the top is a challenge. Really beautiful omelettes, however. I haven't done it yet, but it occurred to me that it would be really easy to make a frittata by starting it in the one pan and heating the next size up one to flip it into. They make double sided frittata pans to do just that. I wouldn't put these in the dishwasher, but cleaning is just so easy! Right after plating, I run the pan under hot water with a drop of dish liquid, give it a swish with a plant fiber scrubbie if necessary, rinse, pat with towel and put back on the warm element to thoroughly dry. Sounds like a lot, but takes less than 15 seconds. If it looks like it needs it, I'll give it a quick spray of oil for the seasoning too. If it hadn't been for that discussion in Appliances, I'd still be using these mostly for socca, blintz pancakes and other crepeish things. Because they're so smooth--smoother even than enamel--I think they're great for anything one might do on a flattop, as long is it doesn't get scrambled or slosh out of the pan.

I'm a parchment paper fan, too.... You can also line non-stick baking sheets with a Silpat if it's something that requires stirring (like granola or roasting vegetables) and you don't want to risk marring the surface. I have switched to silicon kitchen utensils (or will use wood utensils) to prevent scratching the surface of non-stick baking sheets. If you'd like a "better" pan spray, give Bakers & Chefs Cooking Spray a try (I order it from Amazon.com, used to get it at Sam's Club). Where Pam, and other brands darken and stick to pans after several applications, this brand (used by professional bakers) doesn't darken under heat and get sticky. Just be sure to wash the pans carefully (add a little DAWN Ultra Platinum and water to the pan while washing it). The pan spray contains no water or alcohol and is made with 100% canola oil. -Grainlady

Just to follow up my OP. When I went to JC Penney, I ended up buying two pans. Penney's was having a huge sale on the Circulon 12" non-stick, originally $59, on sale for $17.99! So I bought that Circulon 12" pan, and also the Cooks Tri-Ply linked above, except in the 10" size. I decided I didn't like the handles on the Cooks hard-anodized, so that choice was out of the running.

The 10" pan size is actually more practical, since I use it more frequently. But I am glad to have the 12" size for those times I have a big amount for the pan. Having now used both the Circulon and the Tri-Ply non-stick, I'd say the Tri-Ply is slightly preferable. Mostly for cleaning; they both cook equally well. The Circulon, with its tiny ridges (that help with the non-stick ability) is a slightly bit harder to clean cause you have to make sure all the ridges are clean. It's not a big deal, maybe another 30-45 seconds of cleaning over the Tri-Ply nonstick.

Hope my post helps anyone else looking for non-stick pans that are inexpensive but still cook well. I know there is another thread on this Forum where someone doesn't like their T-Fal nonstick. I saw those T-Fals in the store, and felt they were really lightweight, compared to other pans in that same price ballpark. I am glad I chose the JC Penney's Cooks Tri-Ply, and would recommend it.

I bought an Ikea non-stick for $15 and I am VERY happy with it. Not paper thin, and it hasn't nicked yet.

I've had penney's Cooks Anodized cookware for a year and I LOVE IT! Believe the claims... you CAN use metal utensils... it DOES NOT scratch! BUT, you CANNOT wash in the dishwasher. Well worth the price... in fact on sale now for 1/2 price.

I don't buy at JCPenney anymore due to different reasons. One of the reasons is there is no JCPenney Store nearby me and the other is the JCPenney Return Policy which sucks.
