XP: What programs are 'active'?

I have a failing application that requires Flash 6 or newer.

The problem I am having with the application that needs "Flash" may be related to Flash.

If I go Start>Programs I can not find Adobe Flash listed,

But if I go Start>ControlPanel>AddRemovePrograms I find Adobe Flash Player 10 Plugin listed. I assume this means that "Flash" is installed correctly and ready to run when it is called on.

The subject program that isn't working is AT&T Universal Card Virtual Account Number (Generator).

Did you recently install/uninstall/update anything related to Flash? You could use the link below to see if you have the latest versions of Flash and Shockwave installed. Click the "About" tab to see which Flash you have. Are you getting an error message from this application? If yes, post it.

do you have shockwave installed? you can get it from the same download page as flash it is over on the right side of the page.

certain versions of windows 7 have the ability to run xp with in 7 in a virtual mode so that you can then run your old programs that way. The best suggestion is to try to communicate with the programs creators to see if there is a version or an update that will make it compatible many do have an update. If you have windows 7 home premium it does not have that xp function but you still can run a virtual machine set up with in windows 7 and run your programs that way. You would need to read up and understand how to set up and run a virtual machine, there are some free versions available. Startup programs vary by manufacturer and platform. All very subjective at times also. I can run a Hijack This and chop all manner of "seemingly" unnecessary startups out of a system and have it perform really well, only to have a callback about "such-and-such" that isn't there any more. Laptops especially can have a lot of things running that may not appear on a desktop simply due to the nature of the hardware. Of course those very same machines can have a boatload of trialware included in the image, as say, the Sony Vaios did. It is a matter of first understanding the scan from a utility like Hijack This and then actioning according to YOUR expectations. I guess that's why there are forums such as this!

No problem, Breenthumb - I was looking for a much simpler answer, anyway. On my old PC I could press Cont-Alt-Delete and get a list of what was running--maybe 8 items. Doing that on XP gives me a list a mile long. I was hoping for some way to figure out what was what on that list, and could "end task" whatever was going on that I didn't need at the moment. No big deal, I can out-wait the slowdown. It's just annoying. Cheers, J

Messenger & MSN browser have check marks .. so they are installed. You sort of did things backwards. Just browse and expand that list and put a check mark next to your Games & they'll come back. As you notice more things that don't work.. browse that again and add checkmarks. Usually nothing in there is required - all sort of optional stuff that is enabled when it does have a check mark to the item wanted. So uncheck your messenger and MSN browser & they'll go away & use a few less memory and cpu resources and save a few drive bytes.

Thanks, you may be on to the problem identification.

Look I don't have any knowledge of "Shockwave" and the Flash I have is listed as a "Plugin" which I assumed to mean it is plugged into some other application, or is there waiting to be plugged in.

There are no error messages, when I click on the Virtual Account Icon on the desktop the dialog shape comes up, but it is blank. This is on my wife's computer. To test things I loaded the Virtual Account application on my notebook, which I am on right now, and the application works. So there is some hidden difference between our two configurations it seems. The only basic difference is I have XP Home and she has XP Media. Another fact, the application worked on her computer for a long time, maybe years (don't recall), then suddenly stopped working, and the only changes that were made to the computer were the usual updates.

That application also requires a browser, and IE and Firefox are both listed. But, the application can be used without any browser active. The compatibility is for using the application as a plugin on a browser. Indeed on my notebook the application Icon is in my top tool bar area. The use is mainly for making credit card purchases over the web, and doing so with a one-shot (virtual) credit card number, the number can be used only once. So it can not be misused by others.

If "the usual updates" includes any updates of the problem app, maybe it is looking for an updated version of Flash. If the version have installed is not 10.0.32.18, you could try uninstalling the existing version and then install the latest one. It's also possible that even if it is the latest version, it has somehow been corrupted. There's nothing to be lost by doing an uninstall/reinstall, and if it doesn't work you can eliminate that as a possible cause.
