W/XP pro ??? - what's happening in the background...

This is a hard question to ask so it makes sense.

I know my PC is doing something automatically when I'm working because it slows down, and I get the hour-glass symbol by the cursor.

How can I find out what, exactly, it's doing? An example would be if I'm surfing and something starts to update. Is there a way to see what specific program it is, so I can decide if it's important enough to interrupt my work

I'm on dial-up, so everything slows way down when I try to do two things at once.

I think Electrolux, Monogram ZET series, DCS, Wolf, and Dacor all offer the gliding racks...But, some have only 1 per oven. Electrolux and that series of Monogram have all gliding racks, I think. The Monogram ones stay in during self-clean. I think the Electrolux is the least expensive and should be a good choice. If I was starting over, it would definitely be on my short list. If I remember right, it might have touch pad controls and I prefer knobs, which Monogram has, as does my Fisher & Paykel oven, which I love, but doesn't have the full-extension glide racks. Congratulations on the new house and best wishes in your appliance search. You are smart to look into the best choices for yourself, rather than settle for the builder's choices if you don't have to.

Thanks! Still love working w Vista. Re watching TV at work, I work from home evenings and weekends - on other projects unrelated to my corporate exec day job. So the Vista machine is what I chose to keep from co-mingling my personal projects from actual work product. With the hours I spend away from the office (in spite of a 4-hour commute in total each day) I want to know of all the features available w Vista, including the TV/DVR one--have not had time to learn that one yet. Won't hurt to try. there are other places she can actually get updates too. you can get sp2 on cd for example, for free from microsoft, sp3 can be put on a cd also. Also there is a method to get updates using firefox which should not have the validation issue this is the link to that. updater There is also autopatcher, here is some info and the link to it is in the article. Simple definition for the types of update: Autopatcher full: If this is the first time you want to update your operating system, download it, install the updates inside it and reboot. Autopatcher update: Contains update for each month (lets say for this month, March). Use this after you have installed the Autopatcher full. autopatcher info I have never used these just read about others that have, use at your own discretion. I know that Windows Genuine Advantage can be turned off in Internet Explorer, Click Start, all programs, at top select windows update, in the browser click tools, manage add ons, select from the drop down box add-ons IE has used, scroll down to Windows Genuine Advantage, select it and change to disable, save. MS Office '97-'03 should install just fine on Vista. My Office 2000 version did. So, maybe if you have an old version of office, you could install that, then use the XP upgrade Office disk. If PhotoShop 6 will install and is compatible with Vista, then you could install it and use the PhotoShop CS upgrade disk. I guess you'll just have to try and see what happens. Vista will let you know if anything is not compatible during the install.

Zep, this is exactly what I came to ask. Mine is not slowing down and no hourglass, but I hear HD(?) doing something and the light blinks more than ever before--even when I'm doing nothing but reading. First I noticed it was yesterday. Seems to have stopped since I started this. Just like taking car to mechanic.

Would you take a look at what I copied from that site please? The one thing that doesn't sound familiar is that Seaport one sticking out about half way down. Thanks, Sandy

Now right click the MY Computer Icon from the desk top or Start menu-----Choose properties.

Tell me the amount of RAM "Memory> listed____________?

And the Processor Information listed. Close Mycomputer.

Then double click Mycomputer please put mouse over Local disc, a window pops up giving hard drive information, total space & free space...Please provide that information as well.

To uninstall the Search Enhancement Pack, click Start, then Run (if not using Vista), type/paste the following and press Enter:

msiexec /x "A853BEB2-B270-4645-AAAA-9D83C2233BD3>

Did you install this C:\Program Files\BigFix\BigFix.exe, I would uninstall that for now through the add/remove programs list.

C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\PDVDServ.exe click start>run type MSCONFIG click ok click service tab look for this [PDVDServ.exe] un check it you may also need to look under START UP TAB for some of these.

C:\Program Files\SUPERAntiSpyware\SUPERAntiSpyware.exe same as above less it is the paid version.

C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe do the same here.

After the check marks are in place click apply then ok, then reboot the computer, a window will pop up DO NOT SHOW THIS MESSAGE AGAIN..Place a check in the box there..

Not sure if you are using these below:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Windows Live\WLLoginProxy.exe

Big Fix comes with a specific brand of Computer - forget which right now but obviously Sandy has that brand.

Big Fix is e-machine. Sorry, I forgot Properties was a right click on mouse. Thats why I couldn't find it.

I don't see much but normal processes running so follow those instructions above. + run malwarebytes fix everything it finds.

Yes, I've got the info on RAM and what to buy saved in email from that site. Just haven't felt a need for more as yet. No gaming here, videos play fine and pictures open instantly. Thanks for all the help.

Jannaz, sorry this got so involved. Didn't mean to hijack your thread. If I'd known, I'd have started a new one. :)

No problem, Breenthumb - I was looking for a much simpler answer, anyway. On my old PC I could press Cont-Alt-Delete and get a list of what was running--maybe 8 items. Doing that on XP gives me a list a mile long. I was hoping for some way to figure out what was what on that list, and could "end task" whatever was going on that I didn't need at the moment. No big deal, I can out-wait the slowdown. It's just annoying.

Maybe next time its acting up...
press your 'Cont-Alt-Delete
click on the little cpu process bar at top of that list
Probably click it a 2nd time to bring to top the highest cpu users.

In the first few lines you should see what programs are using the highest cpu % at the moment, and one of the higher ones is probably what is slowing you down.

Guess I'm just selectively reading threads lately.
Perhaps always in a hurry to do nothing in particular but at the same time squeeze in everything I possibly can.

I sometimes wonder if maybe my internet connection is just too fast for me to keep up with. So much to do!
