How do I figure out what programs need

to run in the background when you start your computer? My computer is only a few months old, but it takes forever to start up. There are a gazillion programs running in the background on start up and I want to disable the ones I don't need. How do I know which files I need running and how do I disable the files I don't need every time I start the computer? (Windows XP)

I've only got 4 things checked and one of them is Yahoo Messenger and I'm not sure what I need of the other 3 things checked.

Guess I am of no help other than to say not much is 'really' needed...sorry

First you should uninstall any software that you do not use.

Bullnose - also for any outside corners! I have an outside corner on my backsplash - there's a concrete post in the corner that we had to tile around. I totally forgot about it when I was ordering tile (which is funny, because I was obsessed about my outside corners in the bathroom). Well, the tiler asks what I want to do with the corner... he's got these vinyl strips he likes to use for corners. I had already nixed the vinyl strips in the bathroom - I think they look cheesy. I asked if he could miter the corners (cut the edge of the tile in a diagonal so the two corners line up). Well, the corner is exactly the same size as the tile so there isn't enough overlap to miter them. Fortunately, they were rectified porcelain tiles with a nice factory edge, so he was able to just line up the edges. Doesn't look bad. Sorry for the long story, but the upshot is - don't forget the bullnose! ;-)

How do I figure out what kind of flooring I have?

3" is an odd size flooring width. Solid hardwood is available at 3 1/4" for a standard size. You have engineered red oak flooring. The thickness is most likely 3/8". Which has been glued down. To confirm, knock on the floor. If, you have a solid knock, it's engineered glue down. If, it's hollow, you have a floating floor or hollow spots in your glue down flooring.

You need the square footage of the floor you want to tile and then add 10% to the square footage in case tiles break during the cutting and installation. This is what my tiler told me and my two bathroom and hall tiled areas came out great. Also, you can call up any reputable tile store for additional advice.

Startup programs vary by manufacturer and platform. All very subjective at times also. I can run a Hijack This and chop all manner of "seemingly" unnecessary startups out of a system and have it perform really well, only to have a callback about "such-and-such" that isn't there any more. Laptops especially can have a lot of things running that may not appear on a desktop simply due to the nature of the hardware. Of course those very same machines can have a boatload of trialware included in the image, as say, the Sony Vaios did. It is a matter of first understanding the scan from a utility like Hijack This and then actioning according to YOUR expectations. I guess that's why there are forums such as this!
