Windows XP: removing components via Control Panel

As usual, Microsoft makes things so backwards from the way I think that I screwed up something but I am not sure how to undo things now.

I was removing old unused software using the Add/Remove Feature in the Control Panel of Windows XP.

The left hand side of that window displays these four items: Change or Remove Programs (this is selected as a default), Add New Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components, Set Program Access/Defaults.

After cleaning old software that I was not using (using Change or Remove Programs), I decided to click on the other buttons to see what they were for.

I tried the one titled Add/Remove Windows Components, as I had seen something useless (to me) called Windows Messenger that I have tried to get rid of before... unsuccessfully.

The window had a bunch of components listed; Accessories and Utilities; Fax Services; Indexing Serice; Internet Explorer; etc. Some were check marked and others were not. Of interest, I saw Windows Messenger and MSN Explorer listed (not sure what MSN Explorer is but it sounds like something preloaded when I got the PC so I decided to also wipe it off). So "my list of items to delete" consisted of just those two programs, Messenger and MSN Explorer.

So, I made sure that both items were check marked and removed the check marks on everything else. Then I clicked Next and followed the prompts.

As far as I can tell, Windows Messenger is still there. Cannot tell about MSN Explorer since I do not even know how to use it or start it.

Question 1: why did Messenger not go away?

Later on, I also noticed that my Solitaire Game disappeared. When I click on Start>Programs>Accessories>Games (empty list... no games listed).

Question 2. Obviously I did that somehow. What in the world did I do that resulted in that??? It does not even seem related. Can I get them back and how? Since that was so totally unexpected, I am now concerned of other gremlins. Did I mess up something else (that I have not discovered yet) when using the Control Panel for Windows Components?

I obviously did not expect to need to know how the checkmarks were set before I messed things up so I have left things as is. Feels like I am sinking in quicksand if I try to fix more things on my own...

Messenger & MSN browser have check marks .. so they are installed. You sort of did things backwards.

Just browse and expand that list and put a check mark next to your Games & they'll come back.

As you notice more things that don't work.. browse that again and add checkmarks. Usually nothing in there is required - all sort of optional stuff that is enabled when it does have a check mark to the item wanted.

So uncheck your messenger and MSN browser & they'll go away & use a few less memory and cpu resources and save a few drive bytes.

The odds are hugely in favor of your doing more harm than good. No clean up, adjustment, or straightening is ever needed. Especially not by someone without an advanced understanding of what's what, how things work, and what's being done. Even people like that screw up and my thinking is that the risks of doing so far outweigh any benefits of freeing a few megs of disk space or active memory.

John you are not alone in downloading these wannabe programs. I am amazed at how many people download any security type program without first assuring the program does what it reports and is not in fact rogueware. Don't take that as a personal attack please but you offer a window here to warn lurkers about these dangers. There are just too many rogue programs purporting to be the real thing and capable of creating minor miracles no less when in fact they simply want your money. Read the interesting thread linked below from Wilders Security. I had read about this company a couple of years ago, they are located in British Columbia, Canada. Before trying to remove you will need to stop the program if it is running or you will never succeed in removal. To remove it you might try using Windows Explorer Right click on the Start button and click Explore. Look down the left side and click on 'Program files' causing the sub folders to drop down below. Now look down through these sub folders to find the file where your problem program is installed. Be sure you have the right one before moving on. You will no doubt need to expand this folder also and start by removing the sub folders now showing in the right side of your screen. If you succeed in the removal I suggest you run Crap Cleaner to remove any remnants left over from this dirty removal process. Let us know how you go John please. Ok this is simple now. Just use Google and type edit registry and millions of hits appear. Look through the first few and you will find many tutorials with good graphics showing step by step. You are nervous and rightly so because of all the warnings about messing up a registry. HOWEVER, this is nothing more than making a correction to a spelling error if you look at it that way. First time just go into the registry working down to the needed page. Once there you can walk away and grab a coffee if you feel stress, or you can make the simple correction to the one entry in question. Those of us who help others always need to stress the importance of caution in the registry because of those who are so impetuous. my ex son in law is a good example, he goes into a computer like a bull in a china shop. Luckily I do not have to clean up behind him anymore :) Now I have learned how to put stuff into a flash drive and save my files. Why? You are going to back up the registry as a precaution, nothing more. To save your work, assuming it is stored in My Documents. Insert the thumb drive, cancel the popup right click Start click Explore Now you see Windows Explorer opened Look near the top on the left side and right click on My Documnts click Properties in the pop up Look to see how large the My Documents folder is and if you have enough room on the thumb drive. We'll assume you have room. OK.... Click My Documents to highlight On the right side click the top item to highlight Hold down the Shift key and tap the End key now all the right side is highlighted right click anywhere on the highlighted data click Copy in the pop up Scroll down the left side now to find the thumb drive right click on it in the pop up click Paste and the contents are copied to your thumb drive - or any other drive you designate. Done! Simple huh?

Hard to say what you should back up because we do not know what you have. All personal data, email addresses and perhaps favourites/bookmarks of course. As importantly is the drivers for all the motherboard stuff like sound, LAN IDE or SATA drivers. However if you have the CD that came with the motherboard they will all be there. If this is a factory built machine you should have either a recovery partition on the hard drive or CDs. If a factory built life can be easy, just start the recovery process and the computer gets returned to the state it was when it left the factory. You will need drivers for any add on boards like a video or sound card if these are not built into the motherboard. What make and model is this? As Zep says, don't mess with your registry. Nothing will be improved but much could go wrong compounding your problems.

This is a virus....a trojan horse....I can't remember the exact one but I just got through fighting it on two different laptops and finally just reloaded both of them. EXACT same symptoms. You can try bringing up Task Manager with Ctrl+Alt+Del and then....file...New Task (run) and then "msconfig" and try to turn everything off under the "Start-up" tab and then restart....(if you find something under Start-Up that has no name, i.e. blank, that's the virus) it helped for a bit and let me get the virus definitions up to date, but then the virus kept replicating itself and it started doing the same thing all over again. I downloaded the fix from Symantec and even ran that 3 times until it said the virus was completely gone....it lied...it came right back EXACTLY the same way it was before...;-( Reload! lol Good Luck...and you have my empathy. Luis, you may have deselected Games inadvertently. Just open add/remove programs, click "Turn Windows Features On or Off" and ensure Games has a checkmark beside it.

I tried that but it asked me to put a Windows XP CD so I guess I will do without. Not sure if I have a CD somewhere; I do not remember getting one with the Dell PC.
