Non printing Lexmark

Problem : I recently replaced my defunct Toshiba laptop (XP2-home ed) with a new Acer laptop with XP2-pro and McAfee security suite . CanÂt get the old Lexmark 5700 printer to work on the new Acer. I had to get a new parallel to USB adapter cable and the Acer does detect the printer and install the driver included in XP. Always get an error message when I try to print. IÂve checked the cartridges and gone thru the trouble shooting procedure to no avail.

Any ideaÂs on whatÂs wrong ?

Other than the printer just might be too old for the newer computer have you had any problems before?

I am wondering if the ink cartridge carrier has failed to seat correctly after the last use. Mine showed an "Error 1200" but there was no information suggesting what that error might be. It turned out the carrier failed (regularly so I became an expert fixer) to seat properly. To fix it I had to jamb mt thumb smartly up against the side of the carrier till I heard it click in place. Then it might work for an hour, a day or even a week or more before failing again.

At the time this printer was a current model Lexmark listed over 50 models with the same issue yet they never seemed to offer a fix.

What is the error? Also always better to go to the Lexmark Web site and look for support and driver information and get the driver that way, also with a usb connection it is helpful to disconnect the printer when downloading the driver and installing it, once it is installed then connect the printer.

Keep in mind the scanner on most(all?) All-in-one (AIO) is only 300 dpi, not the best for pictures. The printer has much higher resolution, I'm sure (Haven't looked). I have had two Lexmark AIO units. My latest has a flat bed scanner, copies, prints, faxes, guess that's a 4-in-one. I have had good experience with Lexmark and their ink cartridges are easy to refill, saves $$ if you're into that stuff. Not all printers are equal, we also have an Epsom and it is very difficult to re-ink.

OK Sapphires you have answered my questions. Now I will suggest something absolutely stupid. I suspect your printer is one of many models Lexmark built that has a peculiarity. Next time you print a photo remove your internet connection cable and the job will/should complete. There, I told you the cure was stupid. Lexmark built about 50 or more different models with this defect. Then they made it difficult to find the answer on their web site. The article will not be there now probably as these are older printers now. I could not find your model on their site, nor mine. Ours did the same trick and it was always when printing photos and always around 45 to 50% finished when the printer stalled. All that expensive ink wasted does not make for a happy customer.

I resurrect this thread to give a brief report on the X8350 which I put into service about a week ago. The delay in giving this brief review/appraisal is due to the fact there was a problem. I went to Lexmark web-tech-support, which was very slow, but expert. All the time I was thinking I should take the color cartridge out and clean the print head with 91% alcohol. But as it is a new printer I didn't want to do anything to invalidate the warranty. After one go-around with tech-support telling them I think the megenta head on the color cartridge is non-op they came back, after about 3 days, to tell me to "wick" the color cartridge, using water. I used 91% alcohol. This fixed the problem. To the review (assuming a good initial color cartridge): Nice unit, excellent (wonderful) full color status/maintenance display, very intuitive. It looks to be at least one BIG step above the X4270 I had. I am very pleased, and being a refill the ink guy, I can say Lexmark still makes an easy to refill cartridge (I have not yet done so, but I've have given a close look), and the cartridges, while small, are rather inexpensive, meaning it isn't expensive to replace the cartridge after a couple of bulk ink refills.

Nice print! I'm not sure of the difference in quality between the three options, but I do know that non-glare glass takes away some of the crispness of any print. I have a few prints hanging on my walls right now with the non-glare glass. I don't think it detracts too much, but there is a difference, more when you observe the photographic print from an angle.. BTW, just yesterday I ordered a framed print of Mel Allen's "Ullswater, Glenridding" from Art.com . It will be a birthday gift for my DS. I ordered regular glass with it. Let us know, please, what you find out about the differences in quality between the 3 print options. Lynn

Well I downloaded and installed the driver from Lexmark which didn't help.

I noticed that when I try and use the "Install new Cartridge" command under cartridge maintenance that it doesn't activate the cartridge carraige which it's suppose to do. I'm beginning to wonder if the new usb/parallel port adapter cable (Belkin) is defective for some reason. Maybe it's time to get a new printer for Christmas.

OK if it fails to activate the carrier try opening the cover and gently pulling back on the data ribbon to determine if the carrier is indeed seated properly. It should resist if the retainer is holding the cartridge.
