Typography Makes Itself at Home
Letter-based home accessories and art still have many hearts beating. Tell us: Will vintage signage stick around?
There's nothing more appealing to me than an authentic aged billboard or rusted traffic sign. What gets my heart beating at auctions? A giant aluminum set of letters or a neon "Eat" sign. What do I find myself bookmarking over and over again? Typography.
I love letters and numbers and especially adore them when they are authentically old. I do wonder if the trend of putting typography on everything from mugs to art prints to pillows to stairs will last. Will collectors ever lose the joy of finding a great piece of vintage typography? I doubt it. Will typography prints fill Target clearance aisles in the near future? Perhaps.

A basic monogram is the perfect accent for an open space. Personalize your bed with a large-scale letter or accessorize a family space with your initials. Check out this take on the trend from The Real Housewives of Bucks County.
I told you there is nothing that gets my heart beating faster at an auction than a grand piece of authentic typography. Is anybody else jealous of this homeowner?
If you weren't jealous of that homeowner, then maybe you're jealous of this one. The stacked signage and industrial vibe of this space are rockin'!
Second only to the real deal are commercially made industrial letters. If you can't find vintage letters, try blomus for rich-looking metals.
Commercial auctions are a great source for vintage signs and beautiful typography samples. Try complementing your found art with a furniture piece in the same wood tone. These two pieces seem destined to live together.
Typography works best when it fits the style of the space. This beach sign fits this beachy space perfectly.
A Silhouette or Cricut machine can give you the look of authentic signage for less. A compilation of various streets you have lived on gives a trendy punch to your room and brings back cherished memories.
How about this take on the trend from The Old Painted Cottage? Wouldn't you love one of these pieces? I know I would.
Try a split-word print to reference the color choices. This room by Kelly Porter uses a graceful, light version of typography.
Maybe an entire wall of print is more your style. Use stencils to create your own freeform quote or purchase wallpaper with favorite quotations.
Or forget meaning and simply glorify the basic shapes of typography. Isn't this piece beautiful?
Even though I have no idea what this says, I find it beautiful and would be unable to stop touching the etched writing. I'm sure it says something introspective and deep. Anyone care to translate?
Take the script to the floor with a beautiful sweeping loop. This scripted area rug gives the room movement and graceful personality.
Perhaps the most classic way of incorporating typography into your space is with books. Stacked books, bookshelves of books, books without covers, book pages ... the list just goes on and on. Books are versatile, cheap and always lovely.
Another way to seamlessly integrate authentic typography into your space is to frame a handwritten letter, list or poem. It doesn't get much more personal than the written word from your own hand. This example from Typical Type A is just the right balance of personal and artistic, don't you think?
Need something even easier? Try a chalkboard with a verse or quote. This example is from the ubertalented Darlene of Fieldstone Hill.
Adults are not the only ones who can create great typography. Frame your child's writing or simply tape it to the wall for a true personalized space.
One thing that will never go out of style: functional typography. The punchy red of this writing makes it whimisical while the actual words give appropriate warning.
Of course, functional with a twist of humor is even more fun.
Monogrammed Mugs
A classic monogrammed mug is a tough purchase to say no to. Perfectly classy, personalized and affordable to boot! Will these ever go out of style?
Whether it is purchased art, found industrial treasures, game pieces or books, you can't look far without seeing a little typography today. Do you think the trend will last or will we find a new revival to hang our hats on soon? The jury is still out, but I know what my vote is. What's yours?
