Lexmark X8350 Advice and Lower cost ink??

I have exchanged some information this las week on a Lexmark X4270, so don't ask why I'm using an ink jet, I've been happy, albeit, not without some disappointments.

BJs has a special sale price on the (senior model?) X8350 Printer. A couple things I like: the looks and the flat-bed scanner/copier. My X4270 and my previous X63 use a sheet feeder for copy/fax. Also, the X8350 "looks" more office-like in features and touch and feel, and the Lexmark ink cartridges are about 1/2 the cost of the 20 (color) and 70 (Black) I have been using for the last few years. It is hard to tell on the exact size or amount of ink (I didn't look real hard but Lexmark doesn't go out of their way to tell a customer how much ink they are buying), but the box is similar in size to the more expensive 20 and 70 cartridges. I think the cartridges are models in the 30 series, I didn't write it down, may look on the web. Well did Lexmark finally get the message they can make more money selling a customer more ink per dollar? I have a long history of using bulk ink to refill, and it has worked fine, albeit I don't print photographs with my printer.

Coments on X8350 and the associated value/cost of its ink please.

If you don't print photos with your printer you can save a lot of money in the long run with an entry level, black and white, laser printer. Not only are they cheaper to use, the quality of printing is better. We have a Brother HL1435 which is over 2 years old and still using the original cartridge, about 4 or 5 printings per week. I just got so annoyed with constantly replacing cartridges I thought I would comment.

Understood on the cost of ink. I did a scan on the web and while the reviews I found were all good or better for the X8350 there was a universal complaint about the cost of ink, that's were the money is, the printer mfgs don't make any money on the printer itself. I also read the lower cost cartridges I saw at BJs are low capacity, not the long waited for affordable ink from Lexmark (others).

I do like to have color for business documents that come in email and have yellow high light or other means of showing revisions. While I can do on line, read on computer, I do like on bigger papers to print it out and revert to hand-written notes that I'll use for telephone or for guide when I go back on the computer to comment.

We did have lazer printers for a number of years and they worked great, and were supplied by my employer, they no longer are provided. Lazer printers had been very expensive, but I have noted the decline in cost of lazer printers and have seen advice on their economy of cost per page for "ink". I can't say I've seen a lower cost lazer AOI (multi-function):Scan/Print/FAX, at an affordable cost.

I know that here in the dense suburbs of FL, you would pretty much have to match the comparables in your neighborhood. So, if you're building in a high end neighborhood, with a lot of attention being paid to landscaping, you'd better do something equivalent. Likewise, I wouldn't over-do if I were building in a lower-end area. As for cost, whoever did the landscaping in the neighborhood on new builds could give you a ball-park, which in turn could be converted to a percentage of the total. We are going to build in rural SC in a few years, and our landscape costs after final grading will be limited to whatever we spend on cover crop and grass seed. I suppose over the years, we will add a few select shrubs or gardens, but we will work with mostly natives, some of which we'll simply move from the woods. With a 350' driveway, and dense woods, our landscaping is way down the priority list. We'll mostly go with 'Landscaping by God'! YMMV.

Try Print Pal, I've used others and have been happy with cartridges. But I save the most by buying "bulk ink" and refilling cartridges two or three times before replacing. If you're doing only photo, you can do the self service at places like Walmart for under 30 cents each, don't remember the exact number. Your numbers about say 35 Cents just for ink with the Vivera set, maybe more with the Canon. To this you have to add the cost of the paper, what another 50 cents per picture? Of course you save on the gas if printing your own actually saves a trip. My Lexmark X8300 series AIO printer has smaller, lower cost cartridges than most other Lexmarks, I like that because the print head is in the cartridge and when it wears out (from refills) it cost less to get a new set of print heads.

maime, There is nothing wrong with feeling relief. Death is a new beginning, not an ending, part of the circle of life. I'm sure she is happy, now. My Grandmother used to tell me that life was death, and death was life. I miss her horribly still after 20+ years and very grateful that she is no longer suffering the way she had before she passed on. She will always be a very important part of my life, and my children's & Grandchildren's, who never had the pleasure of knowing her as I had. Her memories are alive in everything that I do or the choices I make and will make in the future. Because of her, I am who I am, and I thank her for that till this day!

Consider a laser printer - do you really need colour? Much cheaper to run, and the cartridges don't dry out, which can happen before you've used up the ink. It might be worth considering something like a laser all in one, plus a separate one for colour, if you really need it. Brand wise, I love my samsung laser, it's just a printer but it works great, the drivers are good and it's good to use. I also have an hp all in one Officejet 7200. Hardware, good, but it did crap out under warranty, software in theory great (will allow you to scan direct to pdf if you're using a mac) but in practice, lots and lots of problems with hp drivers and the software, in my experience anyway, and this is my second hp AIO.

I resurrect this thread to give a brief report on the X8350 which I put into service about a week ago. The delay in giving this brief review/appraisal is due to the fact there was a problem. I went to Lexmark web-tech-support, which was very slow, but expert. All the time I was thinking I should take the color cartridge out and clean the print head with 91% alcohol. But as it is a new printer I didn't want to do anything to invalidate the warranty. After one go-around with tech-support telling them I think the megenta head on the color cartridge is non-op they came back, after about 3 days, to tell me to "wick" the color cartridge, using water. I used 91% alcohol. This fixed the problem.

To the review (assuming a good initial color cartridge): Nice unit, excellent (wonderful) full color status/maintenance display, very intuitive. It looks to be at least one BIG step above the X4270 I had. I am very pleased, and being a refill the ink guy, I can say Lexmark still makes an easy to refill cartridge (I have not yet done so, but I've have given a close look), and the cartridges, while small, are rather inexpensive, meaning it isn't expensive to replace the cartridge after a couple of bulk ink refills.
