Computer not online

I have an HP C6280 All-in-One printer. After getting my computer out of the shop for another problem, my HP printer is evidently not being recognized by my computer. I get an "off line" error message. I am running Windows XP. I can scan and print, but I cannot print an email or print something from my MS Word. I hope that was clear.

I have tried unplugging my printer for 30 minutes....then plugging it back in. I went to the Control Panel/Printers and Faxes and my HP Printer was there, but not online. I finally have it showing in the Control Panel as being online, but it still will not print.

Can anyone suggest something to try?

Here is something else .....that really has me mad. I purchase the printer at Office Max two years ago. I also purchased a warranty from Office Max (Assurance) for two years after the HP warranty expires. So my computer is still in warranty from Max Assurance. They are sending me a mailing label and I am to return the printer to them. They will then send me a gift card for a new printer. The printer originally was $200. I am sure the freight sending the computer back to them will be about $30. Knowing I am low in ink in all colors, I think it would be cheaper to just buy a new printer. It looks to me like this warranty is not worth the paper it is written on. It will take about a month for me to get the mailing label they are sending me.....and shipping the printer to them. Instead of getting a new printer, I prefer to just get this one going again. It prints, scans, and copies very well.......when it works.

. (a. Click START select CONTROL PANEL and click on PRINTERS AND FAXES.
NOTE: If you cannot locate PRINTERS AND FAXES, Follow 1(b..
1. (b. Click START select CONTROL PANEL double click PRINTERS AND OTHER HARDWARE, and click on VIEW INSTALLED PRINTERS AND FAXES.

2. Highlight the icon of your printer with a single click.

3. Click on FILE.

4. The only check mark showing should be beside SET AS DEFAULT.

5. Ensure that there is no check mark beside PAUSE PRINTING or USE PRINTER OFFLINE.

6. Simply click on the check marks to remove it.

7. Try printing.

I have a binder with plastic sheets on the rings and a folder/file area in one side. In my plastic sheets are house plans, builder's estimates and allowance sheet, paint colors, the flooring I picked out, cabinets I picked out, a pic of what I want my fireplace to look like, pics of materials I want to use (have used now), how I want my trim to look, pics of furniture, etc. I started out with bunches of stuff, and narrowed it down over time. IMO, it gets easier to weed through once you're in the middle of the build and find out what some of these dream ideas actually cost. ROFL Also, the further into building I got, the more decisions had been made, which made it easier to weed through some of the other things because it all had to blend together and balance out on cost. In my folders are estimates from different subs and suppliers, bills, and receipts. I also keep a current copy of my house building cost spreadsheet in there. The one I printed out today is SCARY!!! ;-) (we're about 3-4 weeks from the end, hopefully) My computer is crammed full of links and pics, and honestly I didn't use that stuff much. It was never convenient when I needed to show somebody something, whereas my notebook was very portable and never needed charging. haha V

For a $10 difference, I would definitely got for 3 mbps. If you've been on dialup, even 1 mbps will seem phenomenal, but e mbps takes it to a different level. One thing to keep in mind about digital phone service is that if the power goes out, you lose the phone. If you've got a cell phone, it's less of an issue. Personally, if I were going to drop my landline, I'd probably use Skype as my computer based service and use my cell as backup. Skype is free for PC to PC calls, and you can get unlimited in and out bound calls to the US and Canada for a few $ a month. One drawback is that it doesn't do 911. If you already have a router and ethernet cables connecting the computers, it will probably work just fine with the cable modem. You may need to make some configuration changes in the router, but that depends on how the connection with the cable modem works (varies by cable company). It should be fairly easy and either the cable company tech support or the router company tech support should be able to help. The cable company may even include that as part of the installation. In some cases, all they'll do is connect one PC and make sure it works, but they may be willing to connect the router. If not, you'll probably just need to connect the router instead of the PC, but there's a possibility that you'll need to change the IP range that the router assigns. You're probably either using 10.x.x.x or 192.168.x.x. If you're using 10.x.x.x and the cable modem has that as its outbound IP, you'll probably have to configure the router to assign 192.168.x.x (or the other way around if the cable modem and the router are both using 192.168.x.x). Another thing that may require a change is logging in. Some cable modems are designed to log in to the ISP and the login information is in the cable modem. In other cases, it's done by the PC (or other device that connects to it). In that case, you'd need to configure the router to log in. I think that if you and your husband were able to figure out how to configure the router and set up your network at home, you should be able to reconfigure it if necessary. It's only a little more involved.

Sorry, I don't know which application you might be referring to that may be sending reports ... From what you just said it sounds perhaps like one of thier 'customer improvement reports' on one of the many available Live programs popped a message box - a message box that initially tells you about the reporting & will normally have an opt_out or opt_in check box to allow reporting or not. I'll let them have that data on new programs but the normal old stuff I opt out just to maybe be slightly more anonymous and save a byte or two. Any data collected is pretty much generic internal use stuff. When opted in I'm just a speck of data ... one of the millions if not billions of specks that tell them how people use microsoft products on thier computers and how many have certain problems and what needs fixed or reworked,, when I opt_in. Microsoft with the way search engine bots scour the web, if they wanted to they can know everything about your surfing habits, but nowhere near as much as google and adobe. Dr Phil just had a few shows on this topic, if you check out his home page and his you tube page, you might be able to find them. One had to do with being out of work and the husband not really looking for a job, the other 2 were dedicated to online and how it ruins peoples lives. Do you really think he's going to go back to work? You mentioned him paying his part of the bills; what exactly does he pay? Who pays for the internet? I would actually think to downgrade service or shut it off due to not being able to afford it. He can't play online with dial up. Trust me, I know. Is he buying computer parts too? My guess would be yes if he's to keep up with his "homies". Next, and this is something you are going to have to think about - do you think he's having an online relationship with someone he met in one of the games? Is he voice chatting? Is he using the IM? Teamspeak? Sleeping elsewhere (was due to his job) doesn't bother me as much as him not doing anything but gaming. Your son is learning some really bad habits from him; he's going to think it's ok for guys to do what they want. Now, if he was home ALL DAY; and not working at all, he should be doing laundry, taking care of dinner as well as cleaning the house and doing the food shopping. The way I feel, and it seems like I'm on a separation kick today; is to show him the door. Tell him this isn't working for you and you need 7 days to think. Tell him to go visit his parents, then see how you feel. If it is no different with him being gone as it is when he's home, take another 7 days to see if that changes how you feel. Dr Phil would give you a piece of his mind for allowing him to use you like this.

Do you still have the install CD that came with the printer?
If yes, you could uninstall the HP software in the Add-Remove list, then use the CD to reinstall the drivers, etc. It will either work or it won't, nothing to lose by trying. Check again to make sure all cords are plugged in tight.

Zep.....I found my printer in Printers and Faxes. I clicked my printer once highlighting it. When I go to FILE, I do not see SET AS DEFAULT. It should be noted that the HP C6280 is the only printer in the Control Panel's Printers and Faxes. It is showing READY.

azinoh, I still have the Installation CD that came with the printer. I will use your suggestion as a last resort....or maybe I should use it now. I guess it would not hurt anything.

I just bought and installed an HP printer today. Just wanted to add here that you are to install the software before reconnecting the USB cable. That is what my directions said anyway. It works.

I think I know the answer to this question, but I just want to check. Do I uninstall from the Control Panel before I attempt the reinstall?

I would, then reinstall the software from disc and follow the prompts. And correct leave the printer disconnected while installing the software. Then connect when it tells you to.

UPDATE: I was tired last night....and decided to tackle my problem using your suggestions with a fresh mind. This morning, I had an email from HP. Yesterday, before making my initial post here, I attempted to engage in an HP Chat. Nothing worked right. I was emailed a form to fill out grading my chat "experience". Of course, I had nothing good to say. This morning, there was an email from HP....telling me to try the Chat again. I did.....and the tech took me to a Utility that would fix most problems. I tried it....and now my problem is fixed.

I really do appreciate all the suggestions here. I am sure you folks don't get enough praise here. I want to thank you all for your help. This is a great website with a lot of knowledgeable people willing to help people like me. Thanks again!

I have an HP all-in-one that I like, but it occasionally decides to go offline, too. I went through the fixes with HP tech support, and it worked for a while, but occasionally and inexplicably will go offline. Sometimes I'll hit "print" and nothing happens. When this occurs, I can typically open up that printer from the taskbar icon, click the "Printer" tab in the window, and just remove the check mark that has mysteriously appeared in front of the "Work Offline" option. Then the printer prints. I know zep mentioned unchecking this entry when he explained the initial setup, but I just thought I'd emphasize that this can recur.

Hopefully, yours won't have a relapse. But keep that in mind if it does. After I uninstalled and reinstalled the software several times, I decided this is a simpler way to get mine to work.
