computer freeze

Hi,

Each time I try to load the "Comcast News" page , "In the news", my computer freezes. I eventually log off , to get out of the freeze. My browser is Mozilla, Firefox and I'm using Windows XP. This is a recent problem that seems to have developed after I updated Firefox AND Super antispyware...........don't know if that is related.

Try loading the page in IE and see if that makes a difference, I just went to the page and didn't see a problem with it as that was my first thought.

Is this the only time your computer freezes?

Hi,
I tried what you suggested and no, when I load it with IE, no problem. Yes, this seems to be the only time the computer freezes. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the update for Firefox.

Correct. Here is my speech for running 2 anti virus, I keep this in notepad because i use it so often, and just paste it in when required... One assumes the anti virus is up to date and working. What if any anti malware programs do you have installed and have you updated and ran them lately? If it is nothing to do with malware then have you ever looked inside the tower? At 3 years old there could be a considerable dust build up causing the computer of over heat. Is the tower on the floor? If so raise it up about 6 inches as all the dust in a home falls to the floor where the fan can suck it into your tower. Try shutting down, remove the power cord from the rear of the tower and remove the left side. Looking inside you can see if the dust has built up especially under the fan on the motherboard. This is the CPU or processor cooling fan and it is critical that this be kept clean. You can remove the dust with a small pure bristle painters brush (home decor, not artist brush, about half inch would be good) or you can buy a can of compressed air. If you use the compressed air be sure to place your finger on the fan to stop it spinning wildly out of control.

Hi again When I checked the event viewer on my desktop, I found this warning under the applications folder - Event ID 1517. The following is copied from the Windows Help and Support Center. ******************************************************* Details Product: Windows Operating System ID: 1517 Source: Userenv Version: 5.2 Symbolic Name: EVENT_HIVE_SAVED Message: Windows saved user %1 registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use. This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account. Explanation Windows unloads each user's profile and user's section of the registry when the user logs off. This message indicates that Windows could not unload the user's profile because a program was referencing the user's section of the registry. This locked the profile. The registry cannot unload profiles that are locked and in use. When the program that is locking the profile is no longer referencing the registry, the profile will be unloaded. User Action No user action is required. ******************************************************** I guess this means I just leave the computer when this happens and it will clear itself at some point???? or What does it mean to try "configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account"?? Still wondering if this has something to do with Avast's "Virus Recovery Database Generator" - maybe it's busy trying to copy programs as we're trying to log off - guess I'll check the Avast forums and see if the issue has shown up there. First possibility is heat. When was the last time you removed the left side panel and cleaned out all the dust bunnies? Hopefully your tower does not sit on the floor where it gathers far more dust than if it was even 6 inches off the floor. Remove the side with the computer still running but touch nothing! Look to see the fans are all running, being an HP I suspect you have one fan sitting over the CPU (processor) and another housed inside the power supply. Once you have determined both are running freely shut down. Now look for dust and crud built up either on the fans or in the case of the CPU fan it will also be on the cooling fins directly underneath. You can buy a small can of compressed air to clean but take the tower outside and blow out the dust. Be sure to hold your finger on the CPU fan to stop it spinning wildly. With the power supply fan use a toothpick or any small non metallic item to stop the fan. DO NOT remove anything and go inside the power supply, it holds power and might bite if you go in there. Another thing might be to check your Event viewer. Click Start, Control panel, Administrative tools, Event viewer. Click System on the left side of the new window and look down thew right side for any red error messages, scroll down as needed. Double click on any for an explanation. Often there will be a link there, click that to see if a fix is offered. Any of that help at all?

It works okay for me with Firefox 3.0.4... At least, presuming I understood the problem correctly.

Went to www.comcast.net; selected the first listing under "In the news". Opened the page okay: "Dow falls below 8,000, S&P at 5-year low"

Is this where the problem is occuring?

Try disabling add/ons for firefox see if that does help,

To disable all of Firefox's add-ons, you have to open the browser in its Safe Mode (no relation to Windows' own Safe Mode) by clicking Start - All Programs
-Mozilla Firefox - Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode). A quicker way is to press the Windows key (in XP, follow this by pressing R), type Firefox - safe-mode, and press Enter.

See the link it gives a picture about the information above, Scrool down to where it says "To disable all of firefox add ons.

If this is no help perhaps it is a up-date problem, but I think you should try the disable add/ons thing first and then try to load page using firefox.

If nothing works then we start to wonder if we/you should consider reinstalling firefox..

Interesting, I've been having loading problems in the last few days. I actually used IE tab today because I couldn't open a few links. Page just times out. Happened on both computers. I never use IE but got so frustrated today. I have FF 2.0.0.18. I'm going to try disabling add-ons.

I disabled add/ons as per your excellent instructions,zep, and the problem has disappeared !

Only that some add/on for firefox is causing the problem, not sure how to narrow it down.

I will type this into google "Trouble shoot add/ons for firefox" and see what appears.
