Same thing happens to me, I just unplug the mouse plug-in on back of puter, and frees up the action again, and off I go. don't know what the big deal is, hope someone can come up with a good solution.
Doesn't happen all the time, just now and then.

mine does that on occasion and I do the same thing unplug the mouse and replug it., it helps that mine is right on my desktop so I don't have to crawl behind the pc.

What mouse are you using? Are you connecting using the round PS/2 connector or a USB port? Is it wireless?

If you are using a USB connection you might consider the adapter shown in the link below. These used to come free when a USB mouse was purchased, not sure if the are these days though.

I'm using a round connector the first time this happened I was using a wireless. I changed back to my regular one.

minnie_tx, if you have the round (PS/2) type plug on your mouse do not unplug it and plug it back in while the computer is running. Bad idea. When it's a USB (the flat, sort of rectangular connector) it's fine to unplug and plug it back in.

When this happens, can you do a ctrl/alt/delete and get the task manager up? If so, take a look at what's running under applications. Also, by chance is your antivirus or something running a scan when this happens? It could be your processor is just tied up.

This may also be the result of a sick or dying peripheral...i.e. mouse/keyboard/printer....particularly if you can't get ctrl+alt+delete to function. In my case...it started with two 6 year old peripherals...a wired mouse and keyboard. I replaced the mouse first. All seemed well...until I experienced exactly what y'all are discussing...freezing. I had to do a hard shut off and reboot to get my system up and running. A couple of those [sigh] and I was off to purchase a new wired keyboard. Finally...success/happiness was mine. So...look for the easiest solution first if your peripherals are aged...before you start digging through your system. If it's a wireless mouse or keyboard...put new batteries in it. If it's wired...and old...purchase a new model. If that doesn't cure the problem...you can always return them for a refund.

I have started having some very strange problems with mine. I have 3 computers hooked up to one KVM switch so I only have one monitor, mouse, keyboard and speakers for all. My mouse is a wireless usb, my keyboard is older hp keyboard with a ps2 to usb adapter which plugs into my usb slot of the KVM switch.

I can start up my hp xp computer and everything works fine, just as it should, my other computers, linux and new xp pc all work fine. The problem comes when I switch from my HP xp pc to one of the others on the kvm then switch back to the HP xp, then my mouse is locked up and at times so is my keyboard, my computer is on and working fine but I have no control, I tried unplugging the usb mouse and the usb keyboard but that now does not help, it seems as if there is no power to them. And the strangest part is I got my old ps2 mouse out and tried plugging it directly into the back of my HP xp machine and that did not work either, nor did plugging my ps2 keyboard directly into the ps2 plugin on the back of the pc. I have to do a hard shutdown of the HP xp machine to gain back my full control then all is fine.

I do not have that problem on either of the other 2 pcs that are connected to the kvm switch.

I have been going nuts trying to troubleshoot this and figure out what the heck is causing it. So if any of you have any thoughts or ideas on what to try please let me know I am willing to try anything just about at this point.

I did just plug in a new keyboard which I had available, it is ps2 also so I have the usb adapter on it plugged into the usb slot on the KVM switch and still have the usb wireless mouse. I am on my linux pc now and everything works perfectly.

I may try a system restore to before these issues started, it seems there are a few other settings that are different on my HP machine that happened about the same time but who knows if that is related.
At this point I am just leaving it shut down till I need to access it then I boot it up do what I need and shut it down again. A pain!

I do not know much about electricals and that sorta seems like what this maybe. I also considered if my usb card has gone wacky in my pc and is not providing good power to the kvm switch.

Anyone??? got any ideas?

Ravencajun I just run a simple 2 port KVM here and have never used a 4 port.

However it seems odd that that issue is with the HP only so I was wondering if the power supply is too marginal for this. With your computer knowledge it might be fair to assume you could have more peripherals connected than the average user might.

I just had a brand new high end power supply put in that pc I think around March so no I really don't think that would be the problem.
But it somehow does seem like some type of power issue, like the power to the usb ports on the kvm switch are not getting the power from the pc to power those.
Now last night after I cleaned the inside of the pc and wiggled everything I could wiggle, and unplugged and replugged, I got sick of it and just walked away, then I started hearing the dings happening when it finds new hardware, when I came to look there were several pop ups showing it had found new hardware and then after that which was quite a lag the mouse and the keyboard both started working and how power lights on. So major lagging there but eventually it did power them. It is just a huge puzzle to me.

I have been using KVM switches for years so know them pretty well and never ever seen this kind of thing.

all I have connected to that pc is a printer, my mouse and keyboard and speakers all through kvm nothing more, when I need to use a usb I have a usb hub I plug in say for a memory card reader etc but that is it nothing major extra.

I am very tempted just to go buy a new usb card and stick it in there and see if it could be something bad with my usb card. But the deal with the ps2 ports not working has me stumped. I don't get why the mouse or keyboard would not work when plugged them in there.
