In a fairy tale world the amd quad core is 2.2x4= 8.8ghz of speed total. vs 3.3 x2 for the dual core intel.

Both of those CPU's have built in Graphics card or Video ... So dont expect any super fast game play. AMD is proud that their on chip graphics is faster than the intel i# series.

OP, if you're not a gamer or a person who does processor intensive work (like editing videos), it's unlikely you'd be able to tell the difference between even more dissimilar chips. Any chip you find in a moderately priced PC from a reputable company (ie, not one of the ultra cheapos) will be suitable for your use, you can ignore whether it's Intel or AMD.

In the not too distant future, you won't find AMD chips in consumer PCs. AMD is going to focus on the server market, they were unable to compete with Intel for a variety of reasons that (to the individual user) don't matter.

I do very little gaming, so no issue there. I read an article that said to steer clear of AMD. Is that because they will not be making them soon?

Snidely's comment on AMD was very interesting. However I would not pass them by because they may leave the market. Having built a fair few computers and every one with AMD I have never had an issue with them. Not suggesting Intel are not as good, personal choice nothing more.

OP - no worries, same as with technical speed differences in the mid-range for general use, the differences between one company's chip and another are not discernible to the user. Indeed, there may not be any. Ignore the chip brand in making your decision.

I may have overstated the case, Owbist. They've ceded the speed wars, as their last "latest and greatest" release cratered. They've said they will be focusing on servers using ARM technology (not x86) - it's cheaper for them and someone else does some of the heavy lifting R+D wise. Also, they need to focus on something with some chance of success, they've not been successful (business-wise) in the PC market. But other than the low-end of the PC market, I guess it remains to be seen what else they'll do.

I heard an interesting thing about AMD. A clerk said they were not going out of business and he said there is a guy that works for intel that goes around saying things like that to stir up trouble for AMD. He said almost every comment like that can be traced back to him, and it spreads like wild fire. I guess the only way we will know for sure it is to wait and see.

What triggers me to comment is when someone either expresses a preference for one or the other, or asks about it. With comparable specs, it's the same difference as preferring Chevron gas over Shell for your car.

One thing EmmaR..when considering your purchase, its always wise to get something a bit better than minimum specs..as the years go by, demands increase and a bare bones may not be able to keep up..Topping out on RAM memory when purchasing is not necessary aslong as the laptop has room/ability to increase RAM at a later date..The couple of hundred dollars to go from an i3 to an i5 would be a wise investment..dont worry too much about HD size unless you store countless photos, or movies..If that is the case, then consider purchasing an external HD to store all of them rather than on the machines HD

Thank you Genes, I have always bought the best I can find whether I need it or not and will do it this time. I am just a little impatient to get my new toy. When I first started inquiring about an all in one W 8 they had just been on the market for 6 days and so far not much to pick from.

The beauty of a forum is that there are always others to correct us when we do not give a correct response. I know I have made a couple of errors on here, not dangerous but not the correct info either and others were quick to make note of it.

Sometimes it is a difference of opinion as there are often more than one answer to fit the help needed, especially if too little info is provided by the person seeking help.

No wonder BB is about to go under with clerks like that. Maybe it's just a personal bias, but I have never liked BB and so have never done business with them. While Circuit City was still around, I bought a number of electronics from them, including three different computers. Maybe it was just the store in my area, but they had several very knowledgeable people in their computer department who gave me good advice. Now, I just do my searching online and then try to find the closest to what I have picked out, either at Staples or W-M, or I order online.

grandms, I also loved Circuit City, never one complaint. I saw them reformatting a customer's computer for them. I only buy at BB because it is the only place I can buy a high end PC. If they give me a bad time I go to the manager.

Tell you the truth, I have never been thru the doors of a BB yet..they have been in town for about 5 years or so..do all my electronic shopping online or at FutureShop or Staples (Can)

Our local BestBuy has several security guys by the entry looking at everybody coming and going and compares your cash register receipts to the convects of your bestbuy grocery bags items. Makes everybody feel like a crook.

Only twice have I had offers of assistance from the department workers and one was guung ho have me look at other than the sale item laptop.
Another time a very young girl did the same when I was looking at an sale verrrrrrrrrrry cheap UPS. She knew ups's so must have been schooled in her department.. but talking to her she obviously knew nothing else about computers. And she was up front with her honestly about that.
