It looks like your brown granite and wood cabinets have a very warm tone to them, and I don't like the cool gray tile against them. Have you considered a tile with a warm tone to it?

I'm having trouble with the granite and the tile as well. Sometimes that's a computer picture issue though...is there any grey in the granite at all? If not, I'd also like to see you pull out some color from the granite, verses the gray of the stainless...

I wouldn't worry about the debth of color and darkness though. You have very light feeling cabinets which will keep the room from appearing too heavy.

I would pick something else other then the grey/stainless color. I too don't really think it is the best choice with your kitchen.

This is a side question. Mom6 can you tell me what kind of Range hood you have in your kitchen.

I agree, the gray colors may be cold and uninviting. I love your hood, granite, etc.
If you are looking for a backsplash that doesn't look like everyone else's - go to a specialty store and ask their opinion. It's the various cuts that may make it hard to put it but I wouldn't think you would have to give up having various colors. Good luck!

The granite does have alot of blue in it. it is blue pearl and very blue.

I have Butterfly Blue, and like you I keep thinking I need blue accents, but in my case, and I think, maybe in yours, the blue doesn't read as blue when looked at as a whole counter. What it does is give another depth/dimension to your counters. When looked at directly with light shining on it, the blue is visible, but someone looking a ways away might just see grey.

I'm not sure what the science/art behind it is- an artist would know, but you actually may be closer to the mark thinking some greys to set off that blue- but then that doesn't really do anything to highlight your cabinets. Maybe slates that have all those colours in there?

I'd like to see a pic of the tiles against your counter without the old blue tiles (if possible). The first pic reads like Baltic Brown which I think was throwing everyone off.

Isn't this searching for a BS a real bugger? I'm giving mine a rest, but am in fact heading out to maybe buy myself a vase which has the colours I think may be what I'm looking for. Unfortunately, my frikken camera has decided to go on the frits (sp?)

I, too, think that the first picture threw everyone off. I actually thought, "What is she thinking?" about putting gray with the brown countertop. Blue Pearl is a completely different animal altogether. Did you like the first countertop choice with it? I'm not sure it IS wrong now that I see your granite. I would just stick with one color though.

Have you looked at any stainless steel backsplashes? I looked at a couple. I ordered some samples from the second link, but I NEED color. I think you have enough with your beautiful blue lights and the blue in your granite. It might be the perfect choice for you! I love that simply by turning the tile, it reflects the light differently and gives a great look. The samples came quickly and were not expensive. I ordered the sampler pack. Loved the subway size too.

I would also take a look at catmom's kitchen. She chose a neutral color that made a big statement without competing with the other elements. Perhaps a very light gray glass tile set on the vertical?

I'm glad you're changing the backsplash. That one did not do your beautiful kitchen justice, it competed with it.

I agree....your kitchen is lovely. I would check out some other b/s that will compliment your countertop and really 'POP' the both of them : ) Have you looked at any blue/black glass styles?

Of all the ones Saskgirl posted, I like the second one from the left, and the second one from the right. The gorgeous dark one to the left of the mixer might also be good, hard to tell in the out of proportion pic.

I still think it's an artistic issue, ie you need someone with an educated eye to help you pick out the right colour/proportion to balance/complement your granite. Maybe ask Nuccia? She just posted her kitchen pics, and she (or someone helping her) obviously has an eye for colour!

Once I get home from work I will post the pic of the glass tile for you to photoshop : )

BTW, why is glass tile so much more difficult to install than other type? My GC told me he would chage an extra fee if I decided on glass tile-- why would, fo example, marble subway tile be any easier to install than glass subway tile. (I'm supposed to pay for and provide the samples, so it isn't the cost ofht e material that is the issue.)
I'd ask him directly, but I think I'm driving him nuts with all the questions I'm throwing at him right now!
