Wireless printing from laptop only?

We have a desk top and 2 laptops all set up in a wireless network, including a wireless printer. I want to ditch the desktop and just use our laptops. However, the network and printer is set up through the desktop which is not wireless.

I've had 2 techs over here because my desk top won't print. It doesn't see the printer. One of the techs told me the operating system is corrupted. Otherwise, it works perfectly. But I can't print!

So here's my stupid question: Can we print through the network without the desktop?

I print from my laptop wirelessly through a desktop. If your desktop doesn't see the printer, chances are neither will the network.
But you can try.

Is everything networked now for file and print sharing ?
Make sure plug and play is enabled on the computers, and maybe also in the router , then Start/Settings/Printers & add a printer to the laptop... it will search and find the printers just as if it were connected directly to the laptop.

You may have to install the printer software on the laptop too, but most likely windows has a driver for it already, but will not have any of the gingerbread software.

The laptops and the printer work fine wirelessly. It's the desktop that doesn't print supposedly because it doesn't see the printer. The two laptops do see it and print. I want to get rid of the desktop without losing the wireless capability. Do I need this desktop for that? The router is now wired through the desktop.

fwiw WPA is the security most would use. One passphrase of 20 charatures is recommended by most to make it virtually unhackable. That security is to keep others out of your router or off your internet connection. Many people screw up writing down passphrases on paper and/or retyping it in. Can't connect complaints usually blaming it on other things are frequently solved by whoops, my passphrase was entered wrong. Copy & Paste passphase is virtually foolproof. But requires a bit of though. Dont push the OK button until you've pasted it onto notepad or something. WEP is ok, but there are programs Johnny Jr next door might use to gain access in a few minutes. One of those four WEP keys is designated the primary key with a bullet or check box... that checked key you would copy/paste into your computer for the passphrase or key. You're not going to be automatically given a key in your home. Maybe at work when login & security is handled off a server. When you do credit cards and other secrets online usually its on a secure web page and those web pages are encryped so mr bad guy & neighbor are not able to see anything except googlygoop.

Not all wireless 2.4 phones disrupt it. Tried a $9 GE from Walgreen's here and it very rarely disrupted... and never on ring or dial. Maybe once every three days. Yet my old expensive Sony would daily a time or two for no reason cause loss of wifi for a minute. Have been using DECT 1.9 phones,, 5 of them here .. they never disturb it. If connecting to a neighbors wifi,, you might talk to the neighbor and explain the benefits of securing thier wifi so you 'cant connect to it unless you know the passkey. Then at least you would get a popup asking you to enter the secret and know you're not stealing their connection. Or just get a bigger antenna and cancel your internet connection and use your neighbors.. heh Have read some people have continue to have problems with 5.8 phones too. I forget exactly ... even though they say 5.8, many will communicate or ring or dial or something on 2.4.

Zep - I have 3 devices in my network list: 1) 1394 net adapter 2)intel 82566mm gigabit network connection (this one I was able to get an updated driver - but on my network connections, it still shows as local area connection - "network cable unplugged,fire..." and I'm not able to click that and get the rest of the sentence. if I click it it just gives me the name of the adapter. 3) intel wireless wifi link 4965AGN The first and third ones say they are connected and firewalled. I believe that this last wireless 4965AGN is the one that has problems and gets repaired. I could be wrong about that. The LAN one I think has always been unconnected/unplugged. I don't know what that's for or if I need it. Is that my wired internet connection? Thanks. Lynn. PS - if I go through network devices and select update drivers, it only offered updated drivers for the intel 82566mm gigabit network connection. Is there any point in googling for updated driver if this route indicate no new drives exist?

pk, yes, frustrated is an understatement. Don't like spending so much time on such things that are probably easy. Did a lot of research with no resolve. Printer is hooked up to a desktop; DT hooked up to router. I don't "think" the printer is connected directly to router. Not sure what ethernet is. Laptop works wirelessly to the printer. Laptop is 8 mos old. Was working perfectly fine with printer until this new router was installed the other day. I have not tried plugging the printer directly to laptop. I'll try that in the morning. Brain is fried right now so I'll continue on this quest in the morning since I need the printer for work. Thanks for the help. Wonder if uninstalling the computer software from laptop, then reinstalling it again, will work.

Should be simple enough to shut down the wired computer to see if the wifi printer still prints across the network ?

Would think it will, but you may need to look at the user pdf for how to configure it.

The printer needs to talk to the router.
