Raven, question about Pandigital

Hi, I am ready to download a book. I went to B&N and did a search on the e-books. When I check out a book it lists the divices that the book is good for but the ones I've looked at don't say the "PDN", mostly they say Nook. Will they work on mine? Is that the best site? I found a place that listed a bunch of free e-books, what about them?

Not Raven, but yes, those for the Nook work on PDN.

yes the nook version works. The free ones are great you will want to get the epub format when you go to the free sites. For example on feedbooks.com one of my fave free sites you can choose from various formats including kindle format and epub, for PDN you would choose epub. Which is also the format that the libraries use which allows you to use the library ebooks too.
Any site that offers ebooks in epub format will be ok for the PDN and most do offer that.

I too avoid beta releases on all except one system which is just for tinkering. On the question of leaving installed betas on-board, I disagree. Unless there is no change reported in the change log, a beta should always be replaced by the final release. All too often users find themselves facing a plethora of beta releases followed by even more RCs (release candidates) before the final release. Take a minute to look at the release history for Firefox on the link below. A user always wants the best, safest, most secure, and most user friendly application available. The final release should always be a clean install rather than the beta overwritten. The use of REVO would be an excellent idea. Betas are not experimental. bpgreen is correct it can cause total corruption of data or damage on the device as well as the pc, especially memory cards since they are more fragile. I would have Dell repair it if it is new, that is a faulty item, have you told them about this? Even though USB devices are Plug & PlayÂthat is, they're ready to go upon being plugged inÂyou shouldn't just unplug them. A USB port has current running through it, so the power jolt caused by unplugging a "hot" connection can corrupt data on a storage device, camera, or mp3 player. "The purpose of "Safely Remove Hardware" is simple: it's how you tell Windows that you're about to remove a device so that Windows can finish whatever it needs to do with it. In the case of disks, for example, Windows flushes all disk buffers, avoiding things like potential corruption. And that's the fear - if you remove something like a USB thumb drive without first telling Windows, it's possible to corrupt the contents of the drive. In practice that doesn't happen often, but it's possible." Safely Remove Hardware You just never know when it will happen, I have definitely seen it happen and it is not pretty, which is why I stress it so much. For things like Ipods it can make it no longer operable. So if it were my pc I would find out why it is not functioning properly. Here is how to create a desktop shortcut link for it you might try that and see if it works any better. Create a Safely Remove Hardware shortcut there is some very good info here for options on how to fix or work around the issues. How to solve Windows' inability to safely remove hardware? there is a little program you can purchase that is supposed to make it a simple one click solution, but I do not know anything about it. I guess you could try the 30 trial period and see if it works. USB Safely Remove So I would do as bpgreen does and shut down before removing it if I was not able to get the remove safely to operate.

This is what he sent me. I have had this for awhile now, it might be a bit different now. Please follow the next steps to correct the issues on your Pandigital Novel: 1. Plug your reader into your computer using the USB cable. 2\. Locate the "My Computer" icon on your desktop or just "Computer". This can also be found by clicking on the "start" button in the lower left\-hand corner of your screen. 3\. Locate the drive listed as "Removable disk". 4\. This file should have Adobe Digital Editions as the first icon. Delete everything in this file except for Adobe Digital Editions. \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ Re\-run the firmware update. I have included specific instructions on how to update your Novel: If you should have any questions after following these directions, please do not hesitate to call our customer service phone number at: (800) 715\-5354. 1. Please visit our website on your home computer at www.pandigital.net 2. This will bring you to our home page, on the right\-hand side of the screen you will see a box with the words "Firmware Updates Click here", please click on this box. 3. This will bring you to the next webpage asking you to select your region. For your specific Pandigital Novel please click on the \[American/Canadian\] flag. 4. You have now reached our information page. On this page, please locate the blue lettering that states: "Click here to learn more and to update your Pandigital Novel." 5. This will bring you to the actual update page. Please read over the information on what the latest firmware update can do for you. The additional features that come with this update are something to be excited about and we�re sure you will be too! 6. Please locate the blue text at the bottom of this screen that states: "Click here to run PC Updater Application." 7. At this point if you have a pop\-up blocker in use, you may get a yellow/gold bar that appears at the top of your screen asking if you would like to allow this pop up. Click on "temporarily allow pop\-ups" and refresh the page by hitting the F5 key on your keyboard. If you do not have a pop\-up blocker in use, ignore this step. 8. You will now have a download box appear on your screen asking you if you wish to run or save this program. If you are using Windows XP with IE you will choose the "Run" option. If you are using Windows Vista, please "Save" this file to your desktop. 9. Windows XP: At this point you may have an information box appear that will inform you that the publisher of this program could not be verified and ask if you are sure you would like to run this program�Click "Run" again. The Updater Application will start automatically. Windows Vista: Please double\-click the download icon on your desktop to being running the Updater Application. 10. The Updater Application should now be on your screen. It lists the steps that you will go through to update your Pandigital Novel. Click on the blue text that states "Click here to start the process". 11. At this point, the program will list some steps you will need to do before updating your novel. These steps are: 1. Unplugging any other USB mass storage devices from your computer. These kinds of devices include flash drives, cameras, photo frames etc. Keyboards and mice are not considered storage devices so if you have any of those plugged into your USB ports, they are ok to leave plugged in. 2. Powering your Pandigital Novel with the supplied AC adapter (please ignore this step and just be sure that your Pandigital Novel is fully charged before you attempt the upgrade process). 3. Connect your Pandigital Novel to your computer using the USB cable that was supplied with your device. 4. Power your Pandigital Novel on (your Novel will go into "PC Mode"\- this means that your Novel will be inoperable while connected to your computer). 12. Once you have completed these steps, please click on "Ok" to advance to the next step. 13. The Updater Application will then display a screen and ask you to confirm the details of your device (serial number, model number, etc.). Confirm these details by clicking on the "Confirm" button. 14. You will now begin the download process. (This process can take some time depending on your computer and your internet speed). 15. Once you have finished the download the screen will display that you have successfully downloaded the firmware update. At this point you will see another text box on appear on your screen giving you more instruction. These instructions will include: 1. Removing your Pandigital Novel device from your computer 2. Informing you that your Novel may or may not turn itself off, if it does not turn itself off, please power the Novel completely off by pressing the power button and choosing the "power off" option. 3. Now it will ask you to power your Novel back on in a very specific way. Please press the power and volume up button (located on the top of your device and is the + key) at the same time (not one and then the other, they must be pressed at the same time) for 10 seconds. Please do these steps until you see two lines of white text appear at the top of your screen that states the boot count and firmware version. As soon as you see these lines of text, let go of the power and volume + buttons. This should begin the update process in the form of a blue progress bar appearing at the bottom of the screen that will state things like "verifying update." If you have reached this screen your Novel is now updating properly. If you do not see this screen, please power your device off once more and try the activation process of holding the power and volume + buttons again. Do not be discouraged if this takes a few tries, and be sure you are holding the edge of the power + button; holding it too close to the middle will not activate the update. 4. Once the update is complete, please power off your Pandigital Novel completely, then reconnect the device to your computer using the USB cable and power it on after it is plugged in. 5. Click on "Ok". This will then run a process called a "restore". Once this has finished please disconnect your novel and once more perform the activation process of holding down the power and volume + buttons. You will again get another blue progress bar at the bottom of your screen when done correctly. 16. Congratulations! You have now updated your Pandigital Novel successfully! I have attached a new user manual for your use as the interface of your Novel has now changed to the most recent version. We hope you enjoy your Novel even more now and make use of all of the newest features! Happy Reading!

LEDs are relatively compact, so the "don't stare into the sun" warning isn't unexpected -- you'll likely see the similar on the old "high-intensity" lights, as well as more contemporary halogen and Xenon lighting. "Never place your LED lamp in direct sunlight" just seems bizarre -- then again, you did just buy a low-bid imported product that had to steal, I mean translate, the manual from somewhere.

Thanks Raven. I created my account and got the book you recommended. I forgot that I have to be connected wirelessly. I am visiting my folks and would have liked to have a book to read for the flight home but I can't connect to download. I thought I could hook up to the computer and get the book. Are any of the other sites a way to hook to the USB and get a book?

sure you can download it to the computer then either use the cable to connect the Pandigital to the pc and move the book over that way or if you have an SD card you can move the book from the pc to the SD card and put the Sd card in the PDN and get it from there.
There are good instructions on the user guide that is loaded on the PDN in the library that should help you.

I did it! I got "Crush" and then surfed and found a bargain on "7th Victim". Have you read any of his books? Didn't know which one I should read first! Thanks so much for you help.

I got 7th victim free also and another good free one they added recently is the Outlander book. One thing I have learned is to always read the little reviews about the free books because sometimes they are not full books only a portion of one just to get you drawn in.

No I am new to these authors, I have not stared reading any of the 3 I mentioned. I am currently reading Jeffery Deavers The burning wire, but I am about finished with it.

I check B&N searching for free ebooks on a regular basis because they do add new ones and sometimes they are major authors. But they do not stay on for free too long so grab them when you can. Also when you click on the actual ebook to look at it and the reviews double check that it says free there before hitting the download button, I got snookered once when it said it was free in the search list but did not notice on the actual page for the book it had a price and I had to pay for it however it was an excellent book and was only like $5 so worth it. I had never read that author and I liked her and plan on getting more of her books.

At feedbooks.com I go to the original books area and have found some really good ones there. I like sci fi books from time to time and they have a very good selection. I got pretty much all of Cory Doctorow's books from there free.

I've read both 7th Victim and Outlander. Both are excellent books. Crush has the same protagonist as 7th Victim. Outlander is very, very long, and now that I've read it, I'm anxious to read the sequels, which are not free (of course).

everyone I know that reads one Outlander is hooked and has to read the series. That is one reason I have put it off LOL

I was going to start 7th victim as soon as I finish the one I am reading. Is there any order for his 2 books?

Crush seems to be a sequel to 7th Victim, so read 7th first. It is somewhat gory in places but held me spellbound.

I'm just a few chapters into Crush now.

I went ahead and started 7th victim this afternoon and am already really into it, I think I will like this author. I did not get too far though since I decided to rest while reading in bed, that led to a nap LOL

Hey Raven! Yes, I am reading 7th Victim also....it is really good. I started it on my return home flight. Unfortunately I thought my battery was charged enough, but it wasn't....not the kind of book you want your reader to die on! By the way, while I was waiting for a reply to my original post here, I'd e-mailed B&N asking them if the Nook books were compatible with the PDN.....I got a reply telling me no, that they weren't!!! You think they are just trying to sell their Nook's? I'm really happy with the mine is working. Haven't figured out the Bookmark thing though. Any tips?

in your book you are reading tap up near the top right side and it will make a little blue ribbon icon appear that bookmarks that page, to see what pages you have bookmarked tap at the top of any book and the menu for the reader appears in there select the bookmarks tab and it will show you all your bookmarks. I always bookmark my page before I close out so that should it not remember my place I can use the bookmark.

Well B&N are linked with the PDN also that is the store associated with it and they have their store icon on the PDN so they should be wanting them to sell as well. You may have just got someone that did not know what they were talking about. Obviously since yes nook books do indeed work on the PDN LOL

The one thing I wish was that the battery life was longer however I have not had mine die on me while reading. If you make sure and turn off your wifi when reading or anytime you will not be using it the battery will last quite a bit longer. To do that just go to settings > network and turn off wifi. I just make a habit of plugging it in everytime I put it down so it is always fully charged.

I was at Bed Bath and Beyond this weekend, they have the Pandigital Novel(white) on sale again for $149 and there was a $20 rebate on it again, plus you can use their 20% off coupons. Brings it down considerably.

My Kindle is on order...ordered it last week from Amazon...now get this..it ships in Mid Jan and can expect delivery in Late Jan to Mid Feb...lovely, what..and to think I am only a couple of hundred miles north of the 49th parallel...you would think I was on a mountain top in Nepal

wow that is a long wait but I know they do sell out of the Kindles especially at this time of year and there have been long waits in the past for them.

I am still reading 7th Victim also, too much real life interfering in my reading time LOL

I purchased 7th Victim from Barnes&Nobel to my PDN and can not unlock it. It keeps saying that my name or credit card is not correct. I called customer service and was told to put in a different default CC#, but it still would not unlock. Since the charge for the book is now on my CC, I don't think changing my CC# in my account is going to work.... I plan on calling again tomorrow, but thought I would post here to see if anyone else is having this problem.

it should not even have charged you because it is a free book at Barnes and Noble or it has been I know I got it free. Maybe they took it off the free list. I got both of his books free.

When I get one it shows up in my books list at Barnes and Noble and also on my Barnes and Noble list on my PDN and then I choose to download it to the pdn from the list.
I think I would call again and see if someone can help at B&N.

Lo and Behold. I was getting ready to call B&N again today for help to unlock the book, but before I did, I tried once more to unlock the book. I got the same message that my name or CC# was incorrect. I left the message on the screen, turned to my computer to go to my B&N account settings, then looked at the PDN and the book has been unlocked.....I paid $2.99 for 7th Victim last week.
Thanks for your input. I have downloaded a few free books from feedbook.com.

wow they did not leave his books on the free list for long I see that now Crush is also one you have to pay for. That is why when you see them listed as free you have to scoop them up fast! I knew they were only doing it for a short time for the Holiday. Glad I got them both free.

I am a PDN fan, tried to win over my SIL who was determined to order a Kindle for my grandson for Christmas. I told him about your issue of not receiving it til almost March. He tells me that he ordered one, night before last and that they tell him that he will get it next Tuesday. Where exactly do you live? He ordered the $189 one.

I had downloaded The Glades, and when I started to read, it is a screenplay from A & E and not a regular book, so I removed it. Was disappointed that was the case.

Raven, could you let me know what version of the update you get when you get around to redoing it. I got the same email today. I updated mine for the 1st time yesterday. I wonder if it's the same firmware version. According to the info in my settings, the firmware I now have is S10_09_23_B_PD......... I used the PC version and thankfully got it right the 1st time. I hope it's the latest version, tho I had no problem with the update, reinstalling my WiFi is a pain, usually takes me several tries-many many numbers and letters.

My current version is S_10_08_06_K_PD.

I just downloaded Version S10_11_19_K_PD. (70.5MB)....I haven't installed it yet....

yes it is dated 11-19-10
sometimes the one you do through the pc update is not always the latest version, the one that uses the sd card so far has always been the latest. I have not tried to get it again yet, I thought I would wait a little while probably everyone got the email and was trying to do it then.

I downloaded and installed the SD card version, just in case I got the same version I had from the PC version. I got it downloaded and installed on the 1st try. It takes lot longer to download the SD card version but installs just as quickly. Even got my WiFi up and running relatively easily. I won't be as reluctant to do updates in the future, but I hope this one is good for a while. Thanks for the info Raven.

this was the first email I got and there have been many firmware updates not sure why they sent out an email this time. I am registered at Barnes and Noble and that is actually where the email came from.
