Date keeps reverting after Windows update

I have a Sony All-in-One computer running Windows Vista that is about 5-6 years old. in the last couple of months, when the computer does a re-boot after a Windows update, the date gets set back to January 1, 2008, and I have trouble, of course getting online to some web sites, until I notice the date is wrong and correct it. I wondered if the CMOS battery might need replacement, but I thought that the symptom of that was the computer clock losing time and mine isn't; it just has a date problem after an update.

Any ideas here about what is going on?

Strange, but I'd have to replace the cmos battery first, then see if the issue clears. That's what I'd do even if it doesn't make total sense.....

Unfortunately, since it's an all-in-one, getting to the motherboard is a huge undertaking requiring massive disassembly. I want to see if there are other options first.

I'm so sorry....in your last conversation did you communicate that you would be there to support him through this crisis? Is it too late to communicate this now? He may decide to get back in touch with you when his life settles down...or maybe he was having strong feelings just a few months in and was confused and used the crisis as an excuse. You may never know but I wouldn't be saying all this if he were a schmuck. Since he does seem like a great guy, it might be worth contacting him in a month or so via text or email with just a " was thinking of you and hope things are going ok" and see what happens. If it's really over.....don't give up! So many people have made great matches on dating websites. And it could happen when you least expect it. My divorced coworker then in her mid 50's met her guy standing in line at Borders..they've been together almost 10 years. Hang in there and stay open to anything.

We painted just the outside (Dark green). Yes, it improved the look as that was the only trim the windows had. The inside were wood casings and trims which were painted white. AND, these are windows now, still haven't decided on new house colour- but plan to keep trim white. (Windows over door weren't replaced as we are planning an addition to the front entry)

caryscott - the thing is, the main reason I hired him is because I was expecting that type of attention. He told me I would get it. It's sort of a long story, but he's really just "starting out" in the business, having spent most of his working life doing something else and doing this as sort of hobby/past-time. Right up until we hired him, he wasn't really working on multiple jobs at once. Now, all of a sudden, he's too busy and he ends up NOT being at my house for days at a time, leaving unskilled workers there and having them make mistakes, and making mistakes himself - probably because he's rushing!!! And not to sound too nasty, but I really don't care who else he is making happy at this point. He promised me things and is not coming through. I'm a little extra crabby right now because yes, it's 1:30 on Thursday, the granite is coming tomorrow, and he's NOT at my house to make the corrections that need doing before the granite can be installed. My husband thinks he plays golf on Thursdays...I am not a happy camper right now. SQ

On the Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise you get the "Disable Automatic Driver Updates" option after disabling the entire auto update. (On my system, Windows 10 Home there are no other options after disabling the Automatic Update function.) You can put off the entire update for a while but you can't stop the downloading of any of the drivers that may be wrecking your system .. as the video driver does mine! On a site that I have trusted, many times (How-To Geek) for "How To solutions", I found the following 'tools' for doing what I can't do myself! I have downloaded both the disable and enable tools but wont use them until I get a number of feedbacks from the experts! (You) With no other solution, would some of you techs please take a look and tell me what you think? Thanks! So anytime you reboot the computer it retains the time & Date setting that you set. Only after a Windows up date it looses time.

the date gets set back to January 1, 2008,

That's the date that the BIOS was probably installed, since the cmos battery can't hold the date you set, it reverts to default date of January 1, 2008

That's just my thinking, it seems that the date would get messed up after any reboot though, that's where I get confused about what's going on, that being said a bad cmos battery can cause very weird problems other then just time an date issues.

I leave my computer on most of the time. We lost power in a wind storm for about 16 hours last night, and when I booted up, the date had reverted again...and I doubt there were Windows updates. However, when I subsequently restarted it, the date was fine. I'm thinking you are right about the battery starting to fail, but I hate to pay a tech to replace it. If the battery completely dies, could I have any serious problems, other than the need to re-set the date if the computer's off for too long? I did a little online reading and it sounds like newer computers only rely on the battery for the date and time. What's your opinion?

I do believe you're right, the cmos battery only holds the date & time in modern computers. The BIOS information is now held in:

EEPROM or flash memory (like the BIOS code itself); the remaining usage for the battery is then to keep the real-time clock (RTC) going.

Thanks. Since I may only hold onto this computer for another year or two, I think I'll put off replacing the battery for now.
