IE Cumulative Update

Hello,

I'm having a problem downloading a Windows Update: A Cumulative Update for Internet Explorer (KB939653). I thought this had already been downloaded on a previous occasion (using FF's WindizUpdate). But today a scan said that I needed this update -- as if it had *not* been downloaded/installed after all !

I looked in Add/Remove Programs and it showed the update as if it were installed. But when I went to FF's Windiz Update *or* Microsoft Update they both said I needed to install this update. (Btw, when I used the Microsoft update through IE, and it showed me needing this update, it showed the download size as "0 kb," as if I needed it but already had it !)

I tried uninstalling the update, rebooting, and reinstalling it (through IE or FF), but I get the same result: It downloads and installs, but a subsequent scan shows that I *don't* have it !

So, what's my problem ? Has this update, in fact, been installed (as shown in Add/Remove Programs) -- in which case the FF and IE scans are not registering the fact ? Or has the update *not* been installed -- in which case no amount of uninstalling, rebooting, rescanning, redownloading, and reinstalling seems to work !

Any suggestions ??

I'd probably go to download.microsoft.com and look at update history to see if the install failed.

Do yourself one better, dump IE and get Firefox. It is faster, more secure and has better features. It's free. Try it at least, it couldn't hurt. You'll never go back to Micro$oft.

I meant to reply sooner, but have been away. Pawneepapa, you made it it a success! We just helped a little. I was wowed by the variety I received in the pack. I can't wait to get planting. I got my seeds a week or two ago but have been delinquent in my thank you posting. Thanks so much for the incredible collection of seeds! This year's plants are already in the beds thanks to last year's swap, but I cant wait to try all these out next year! Follow the instructions in this link, and you should be able to uninstall it. That being said, I've never reverted to an older version of something as important as a browser so I can't guess what if anything might go wrong. Is IE your only browser? If yes, now might be a good time to check out the available alternatives. Even if you don't want to use another browser, it's a very good idea to have one available just in case something goes wrong with IE. I understand you don't like IE, but a rush to dump it on the same day you installed it is ill-advised. You should give it a fair trial whether you like it or not. When it comes to computers, change is a fact of life and you'll eventually be at a disadvantage if you refuse to cope with the changes. FWIW, I prefer Firefox 4 over all others. you really really do need to update to either 7 or 8 that sp3 warning was for long ago when sp3 first came out and people were still using IE6 that should NOT be the case anymore because no one should be using IE6. Having it and using it is equivilant to turning off your antivirus program and your firewall you are walking a very dangerous path. Ie7 is perfectly fine I provided the link for the direct download on a recent thread but if you missed it here it is Windows Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP why not at least go to 7 and then you can always go on to 8 later on. Start out the New Year on a safe footing.

Thanks for the responses !

mikie: I did what you suggested and the download history showed that the update *was* successfully installed. So, I reran the 'custom' update search and it showed "0" priority updates required. So, my repeated attempts to install must've finally worked. (Wish I knew how !) ;-)

klaa2: Actually, as mentioned in my original post I *do* use FF. In fact, it was the failure of WindizUpdate (a FF extension) to successfully install the stated update that led me to try to download + install it using IE -- which also didn't work the first two times ! And even now (i.e. now that the update has been successfully installed by IE and which Add/Remove Programs and the Microsoft Download History page verify as being installed) FF's WindizUpdate *STILL* shows the update as NOT being installed !!

Btw, the reason for even installing an update for IE -- and the reason I don't just dump IE -- is that someone else who uses the computer uses IE for playing Pogo games (which work better with IE).

Also, btw, I had the same trouble on another computer at a relative's house. It took IE to download + install the relevant update, which WindizUpdate doesn't recognize as installed, but Microsoft Update scan, download history (and the list in Add/Remove Programs) show as installed. :-/
