Ack! Hate IE 9 Update for Vista!

Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows Vista

I installed this "Important" update today - and I hate it. Can I just uninstall it without damaging anything! It's awful and I want it gone. How can I get back to my pre-update version?

Follow the instructions in this link, and you should be able to uninstall it. That being said, I've never reverted to an older version of something as important as a browser so I can't guess what if anything might go wrong. Is IE your only browser? If yes, now might be a good time to check out the available alternatives. Even if you don't want to use another browser, it's a very good idea to have one available just in case something goes wrong with IE.

I understand you don't like IE, but a rush to dump it on the same day you installed it is ill-advised. You should give it a fair trial whether you like it or not. When it comes to computers, change is a fact of life and you'll eventually be at a disadvantage if you refuse to cope with the changes. FWIW, I prefer Firefox 4 over all others. I only use IE when I have to...for work.

Hi, and thanks, azinoh. It's not that I don't like IE. I do like IE - it's all I've ever used (and yes, it's my only browser, but due to your cautioning of me I will look at others just to have available). I'll take a look at Firefox 4. I've heard good things about it.

I also understand and agree with your comments about change. I'm ok with change but at the moment am in a "let's just have one thing that I don't have to deal with right now" period! tee hee. Thanks for your quick response. I'll give the uninstall a go.

Well, I've been watching a lot of Food Network this morning and they seem to be making lots of dishes with garlic. Since it's so close to Halloween I wondered how the whole garlic and vampire thing came into being. Some people believe that the association of garlic warding off vampires has to do with bug or animal bites. One is rabies. You can get rabies from any animal bite from an animal that has rabies. Remember Cujo (Stephen King) getting rabies from the bat? Anyway, I guess if you have rabies you become fixated on certain scents. One of them being garlic. Another theory is that of mosquito bites. Since mosquitos suck blood, they fly and can be warded off be garlic, it's not a difficult jump to vampires (if you have a vivid imagination.) Anyway, here's a little more info! IE9 switch to other browser?

Try a different browser, like Firefox. It's free and setting it up will only take a few minutes out of your day. Before you discontinue using IE, be sure to clear the cache to eliminate unnecessary files. Click on Tools, Internet Options, then Delete Browsing History, (If you've never done it, that could be a possible cause of your problem. Browsers accumulate a lot of unneeded junk files over time). A PC with Vista is >5 years old, paying for a Windows upgrade is probably ill-advised anyway. It's also possible that the PC has a hardware problem. If erratic behavior continues, it's time to buy a new PC. I personally wouldn't take such an old machine to a tech to diagnose or fix.

It's called Windows Mail in Vista. Look in "all programs" after you hit start and click on it. You'll have to set it up with your new internet provider according to their instructions. I use Yahoo mail and Hotmail and Windows Mail, each serves a different audience when I communicate, one for friends, one for junk and Windows Mail as the default mail program in Vista (cause it won't let me use the others.) I have Vista Home Premium, so Pro may be a little different, but probably not too much. MSFT just came out with SP1 for Vista, so if you have all the right drivers, it will download as an update when you get online. All Vista is, is Win XP with a pretty dress on. As you learn it, you'll see. It's not really different at all, just better looking and things have new names to confuse us. The tutorial that comes with it is good as is the info at the link below. I think all you have to do is select the filter list(s) you want to use from the selection box and that's it. Actually, if I randomly select various choices from the filter selection list, I can watch %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Adblock Plus for IE\patterns.ini change, both in size and time-stamp. You're welcome to try this if you want. I put it together when I was trying to see how certain sites detect the use of adblocker and pop up a "Please disable your adblocker you dirty rat" type message. What it does is attempt to use a JavaScript file called "advertisement.js" to write a hidden div(ision) to the page. The page then checks for the existence of that hidden div(ision). If the div(ision) exists, it assumes you must not be using a working adblocker. If the div(ision) does not exist, it assumes your adblocker prevented it's creation and thus must be working properly. I simplified/modified what I found from a "search", so can't guarantee how accurate it is. Hopefully they'll email you back. Personally, if it's blocking ads, I'd think it's working fine though.

I really couldnt find the IE9 in add/remove in the control panel, so I just did a system restore to the time of the IE9 install

Suzie, I'm not crazy about IE9 for Windows 7 yet either, I'm finding the multi-tabs clumsy compared to IE8, took me a few 'resented' minutes to get the tool bar set up and visible - but I'm sure I'll get the hang of it.

Just have a little patience, If you like IE my guess is it will be second nature to you in just a few days. I do understand the 'not one more thing to deal with right now' - but then, the timing of this stuff is never really convenient, is it ;)
