You're using a very old version of Adobe Acrobat reader. The most current version is 9.2. Here is a link to the current version.

There are also some alternatives that are smaller and faster. Foxit is the one I've been using. I haven't used PDF Xchange yet, but I've heard good things about it and plan to give it a try.

I have been using Foxit, but upon Ravencajun's recommendation, I just finished installing PDF XChange. Haven't used it yet. Here is a copy of her recommendation, as posted on the thread about PC Magazines list of free programs:

Yes I do now use the PDF-xchange viewer, and really like it.

You are in very dangerous territory with that old version of Adobe reader on your pc, the most serious vulnerabilities lately have been in adobe reader which is why they have been putting out more and more updated versions to close up those dangerous holes in the old programs. So even if you choose to use an alternative product you definitely need to either get rid of your old adobe or update to the latest version and remove the old ones.

I just recently installed Sumatra PDF Reader. It is only 1.43Mb in size and does a great job. I don't remember who recommended it, but it is a nice little program.

If you do decide to remove AR please consider using REVO. Since v5.0, AR has been getting larger and larger while integrating deeper into the O/S. It can be a real bugger to remove with it's own utility if you can at all. I've seen corrupt uninstaller reports when trying to do so.

Also, if you do decide to install the current version of AR I would suggest removing v5.0 first. My recollection is during the v3.0, v4.0, v5.0 era all too often those who attempted an overwrite actually ended up with two versions installed via the same folder.

Minnie, I may be misunderstanding what you meant about "lot of stuff downloads using it so I guess I have to have it." If I have this right, just because the program says Adobe Reader required doesn't mean you can't view it unless you have AR on your machine. What it means is a PDF viewer is required. I haven't had it for quite awhile, but when there is a PDF file involved, Fox-it figured it out and did the job just fine. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

you are correct any of the PDF readers we have mentioned will do the same job as the Adobe reader would do, the really important thing here is to eliminate those old versions from the pc because you are at very very high risk with them on the pc.
