Question about Control Panel - Add or Remove

When I go to Control Panel > Add or Remove.... I see JAVA TM Update 2, 3, 5, 7.... Could I remove the older versions?

yes and you should the old versions can be security leaks to your pc, java unfortunately does not remove the old version when you update it so you have to remember to do that manually, but there is a great little free program that will do it all for you and get all the bits and peices. Called javara. You can also remove from add remove.

Be sure you do have the latest java update they have put out a few new one lately, you can always go to the control panel to your java open it there and hit the update button.

Thank you Raven.....for the interesting info. What about all the Security Updates for Microsoft Windows....could I remove them or should I leave them alone. As you can tell I like to clean my computer files. ...Thanks for any input.

Scott, thank you for your advice on using the pressure sprayer vs. the hose end. I don't have a backpack type sprayer, just the carry around type. The reason I asked about using the two different types of sprayer is; I have a complete blockage of the brachial artery right before it separates in to the radial and ulnar arteries. This happened when I slipped on some ice and hade a compound dislocation of my right elbow. And I just happen to be right handed. I have had surgery to repair the pinched ulnar nerve, but the peripheral surgeon wonÂt touch the blockage unless that my hand would happen to lose much more blood flow. Luckily my arm built smaller vessels to get blood flow around the blockage, but I still donÂt have the normal amount of blood flow to my hand. Because of this my hand and forearm get tired much easier than before my injury. To boil all of it down, it is harder to use a pressure sprayer than it use to be. As I previous noted, the Imidan issue is moot, we have birds nesting is some of the trees now. I already have a big bag of the Surround so I will try to get it applied very thick, but I will have to wait until this rainy spell is over. There is no reason to spray the trees and have it washed off the next or even the same day. Plus some of the apples have not finished blooming. I just hope that I donÂt get too much Plum Curculio damage in the mean time. Bagging fruit sounds interesting, but it may be a little more labor intensive than I can handle. Insecticidal soap has minimal (no) effect on earwigs. It is registered for use on soft bodied insects like aphids, soft scale, mealy bugs and various larvae - the soap coats the insect bodies and smothers them. Since earwigs don't function biologically in the same manner, this approach really doesn't work :-) Formulations that contain pyrethrins or spinosad have much greater effect because of the addition of those products but require the earwigs to consume the treated plants. Plain insecticidal soap is a contact control only. Be careful using home remedies. Often they can cause phytotoxic reactions with the plants. If making your own insecticidal soap, use a non-antibacterial, non-detergent based liquid soap like Dr. Bonners. You need only a tsp of soap to a gallon of water. Some folks add a few drops of cooking oil (canola, olive) to the solution to help it adhere to the foliage. Search out some botanical insecticides registered for earwigs - rotenone, pyrethrins, spinosad - or use diatomaceous earth or traps. IME, traps tend to be the most effective way of controlling these pests. A key element of an earwig management program is trapping. Scatter numerous traps throughout the yard. Traps can easily be hidden near shrubbery and ground cover plantings, or against fences. A low-sided can, such as a cat food or tuna fish can, with 1/2-inch of oil in the bottom makes an excellent trap. Fish oil (e.g., tuna fish oil) is very attractive to earwigs or vegetable oil with a drop of bacon grease can be used. Dump captured earwigs and refill cans with oil. Other common types of traps are a rolled-up newspaper, corrugated cardboard, bamboo tube, or short piece of hose. Place these traps on the soil near plants just before dark and shake accumulated earwigs out into a pail of soapy water in the morning. Continue these procedures every day until you are no longer catching earwigs.

Re: knob vs. digital. In large part on many units (although I don't know about your specific unit, whatever it might be), the knob is just the mechanical front end to a digital electronic panel in back which will interpret your dial rotation. You will still then have a digital controller - it is just the very peripheral interface that is different. On the broader note, it is repeated here often that electronics are more prone to failure than the supposedly "simple" machines but IMO that is nonsense. The "simple" analog machines still have controllers, they still need to regulate temperature errors. Sure there are "simple" passive devices that can be used for that. But those simple passive temperature regulators are mechanical and guess what! they are the point of failure in the "simple" switches. Pieces and parts that move - especially those that are prone to thermal or mechanical stress - are going to break. Full stop. It was one of the more compelling reasons for going to electronics componentry. And with electronics components yes, it's true that the silicon may develop faults. But the fact is that electronic units are very modular and a repair involves switching out one of a very few pieces and parts. As opposed to recreating and debugging the entire electric circuit in a "simple" machine. Frankly, I'd go for modern, get the improved precision you can get with an electronic unit because as far as failures - its a toss up (IMO) whether a mechanical part is going to fail first in a "simple" machine or an electronic part is going to fail first in a digital machine.

Messenger & MSN browser have check marks .. so they are installed. You sort of did things backwards. Just browse and expand that list and put a check mark next to your Games & they'll come back. As you notice more things that don't work.. browse that again and add checkmarks. Usually nothing in there is required - all sort of optional stuff that is enabled when it does have a check mark to the item wanted. So uncheck your messenger and MSN browser & they'll go away & use a few less memory and cpu resources and save a few drive bytes.

no you want to leave those there those are the uninstall options for your updates and they need to be there just in case you ever need to remove them so in general it is best to just leave them alone.

a very good program you can use either online or download it is the Secunia Personal inspector it will check all the stuff on your pc and let you know if there are updates available, it is also free.

and a good safe program to use to help clean up safely is ATF
ATF-Cleaner.
you can use it for each version of browser that you have on your pc.

I do not use or recommend any type of registry cleaner.

ravencajun .. I was interested in the comments you made above about installing javara to clear/remove old version of java. since I had a lot of old versions of java in the add/remove list I did as you suggested and downloaded the javara to take care of those old files.

here's my question........where did it go. After i downloaded it, I can't find it to run the program to clear/remove the old versions of java.

thanks for sharing your knowledge.......you and others here have been very good to "almost computer illiterate" folks like me.

well do you know where to you told it to put the javara when you did the download? did you put it on your desktop or in a folder somewhere, you would need to go to where ever you stored it?

you could search for where you put it, start, search, find files or folders and look for javara.

I would think it defaults to the program files folder, so open "my computer" now double click "c" Local Disk, ok you are lookig at the hard drive now look for the folder called "Program files" Double click it in the folder look for "javara"

Ravencajun.. I am totally confused. I downloaded JavaRa1.11, but it as saved as RegCur.... is it the same one? As you can tell I am still learning. Thank so much for any input.

I did scan my computer with RegCur.... I hope I did the right thing.

no RegCur is not at all the same as javara, did you click on the link I provided? it gives links to javara.zip which is the download for javara I went and checked each of the download mirrors on the site I provided and none of those lead to RegCure they all lead directly to javara.zip. I have no idea where you would have got regcur??

Regcur is NOT something you want in fact if you go to their website it is RED listed by both WOT and McAfee site advisor. You want to go to add remove and remove that from your pc.

I never ever advise using any type of registry cleaners.

the link I will provide below should open up a direct download for the javara.zip, this is a zipped file just save it and the choose to unzip then run the program.

I clicked: JavaRa 1.11. That is where I found RegCur. I removed RegCur.... and going to take a break.... I am totally confused. I don't know how I got RegCur either. Whew that was not good at all.

All of the javara links go to javara.zip I checked each one on that site, I actually clicked to get the download on each mirror and each one was javara.zip.

No idea where RegCur came from.
