E-readers' effect on your reading.

I have a Kindle but I am certain the effect is the same on all readers. I absolutely devour books! I read several books so quickly I wondered if they were abridged. Then I noticed the number of pages of a paperback copy was more than 450 and I had just sailed through the e-book edition. I am so much more comfortable in my recliner or on the couch with the Kindle because the Kindle is so small and light and easy to hold and turn pages. I used to frequently lose my place while reading "real" books and it slowed my reading considerably while I hunted for the spot where my mind wandered. It is effortless to read while eating because I put the Kindle on the table and have both hands free to eat except for page turns. I do have to turn pages very frequently, but somehow I always have a finger free to press the button. I know I read for many more hours a day because I am so comfortable. I am enjoying my reading, but even buying the cheapest titles or some free books, I am spending 2-3 times more each month than I used to on "real" books. I used to find used books for less than a dollar and pay $3.99 for shipping so I was never spending a lot on books. Still, my Visa card doesn't lie--I am spending more now. I am not so poor that I can't afford my current voracious reading but it does twinge my thrifty Yankee mindset. At least the TV is on far less often.
