What's an air gap? Is that an alternative to the high loop install?

Found them on the web. If I don't have a garbage disposer and my local code doesn't require one, is there any reason to favor it over the high loop method?

never an odor and it was installed correctly...I can't understand how they could be installed incorrectly as the hose is looped and fastened in its own inset formed place along the side of the dishwasher. I looked at it before the install and asked the plumber how anyone could do it wrong ..he laughed and said there are plenty of folks who go out of there way to mess things up. So that is one plumber's opinion...but we only run our 2-3 x a week and it is pristine inside between times so he must be right about somethings. Caroline

are you saying your drain isn't hooked up to a garabage disposal? if so, I am assuming you are connected directly to a drain line with a p-trap right? otherwise you may be venting sewer gas back into the dishwasher.

What kind of oddor are we talking about here ? Mine smells the detergent right after door opening, and I've no clue what high loop or air gap is.

No, I don't have a garbage disposal, and I'm waiting for my DW to arrive. From what I've read here, I assume:
1. With correct installation, there's no smell problem.
2. High loop install is obvious to the installer.
3. HL install is as good as an air gap.
From the first time I read a comment about Bosch DW smell, I guessed that installation was the only obvious, individual variable. It's not like Bosch makes one line that smells and one that doesn't.

Phrog - don't have a gd, do have a bosch with no odor problems. I am clueless as to part 2, sorry. I took a pic for you. I can always call my kitchen guy and ask, as well.

I can't tell, Nat, but I'm guessing the DW is to the right of the panel with the cutout? I'd guess the loop, if there, is a section of the gray hose that's hidden by the panel.

I spoke to our intaller, who's coming Tuesday. Turns out he's the same guy who installed our KA dishwasher 10 years ago! Anyway, he's very good, and when I mentioned smell problems/high loop, he said he always does the loop, regardless of brand. Never had a complaint about smell, either.

My conclusion: anyone with a smell problem should check their install -- the only individual variable I've found in my research.

That's exactly how our dishwasher is installed! No high-loop, no air-gap [and no garbage disposal, since they aren't sold over here :( ].

We never had a problem with water not draining completely or even backing up into the DW because there's a non-return valve built into the machine.

Even the one time when our kitchen sink's drain was clogged the DW drained without problems - but instead of sending the dirty water down the drain, our sink suddenly started filling with hot, steamy wash water...

Interesting...we still have no one who has the loop/air gap AND the smell problem. You own a Bosch, trainee? An especially new or old one?

Just installed the dishwasher yesterday and have run it twice. No odor and using an air gap. I was debating to use the air gap or not, the instructions only say that the drain hose needs to be 20 inches off the floor. The connection to the GD was 21 inches off the floor so, I would not have needed a high loop if I understand the instruction right. Acoreana's picture makes it look like the connection is over 20 inches, so there might not be any high loop hidden. Since I already had the hole in the counter for the air gap it wasn't too much of a choice.

Well, we currently have a broken AEG dishwasher, which will be replaced with a high(er)-end Bosch.

My gradma bought her Siemens approx. 10 years ago - again, no high-loop or anything and no smell whatsoever. Its drain hose connects to the drain in the same way as shown in acoreana's picture.

FWIW - here's a picture of the pump assembly of a Bosch DW (Evolution 800 Series / SHE66C05UC to be precise). No. 0417 is the drain pump and no. 0416 is the non-return valve.

oliverw made a good point: in our kitchen the connection drain hose / drain is also about 21 inches off the floor - maybe that already counts as a high-loop?

I'll measure it for ya...okay, had to use my DD's school ruler, LOL. Only other option is my gadget loving DBF's lazer ruler majiggy.

If your referring to the gray hose, it is connected at approx. 22 to 23 inches from the floor.

The dishwasher actually had the drain pipe in a high loop configuration held by a rubber band from the factory. I had to add some extra drain hose to reach the drain because of this, but no big deal. We run the dishwasher every night. We use Cascade complete liquid. The dishwasher actually smells pretty good. My wife loves it. Cleans great.

No odor problem.

Installed correctly - high loop.

2 years old.

Use Cascade and run the unit once a day. Works beautifully.

We've had a mid-range Bosch since 2002. The only time we have odor is on those rare occasions (like when my husband is out of town and I'm all alone) that it doesn't run three or more days. Don't know about "high loop," but we do have a garbage disposal.

We've got two top-of-the-line Bosch's in our new home (one week to move in).

I've had my Bosch DW for about 3 years and it's developed a foul odor and is not washing dishes well at all. I cleaned out the food trap and there's a small amount of standing water in there. I've run it twice with no dishes to see if the water can be removed but it's still a small puddle in the bottom.

I don't have a clogged kitchen sink and I'm not sure about the high loop. DH says we don't have an air gap.

I have a repair guy coming on Saturday since I purchased the ext. warranty but I was hoping I could unclog it myself. DH thinks it's the pump gone out.

We had a brand new Bosch (top-of-the-line, but can't remember model number off hand) with a bad pump replaced in our new home. (It never worked.) Anyway, that unit definitely had a foul odor, even without ever running a load of dishes (just standing water). After this experience, I think pump issues might be more the issue when there is a smell.

We've had the Bosch SHU9952 for about 3 years, installed correctly and with an air gap and disposal. Sometimes I can't stand to open it, the smell is so bad. Doesn't matter if the dishes are clean or dirty, it's a rotten, nasty odor. There is standing water under the filter thing. I clean the filter regularly, but there is rarely anything in it. I swear I can smell it on the clean dishes even after they are out on the counter. Of course, my dh says he can't smell a thing. On the bright side, it's quiet and the dishes are clean.

oh my, kmom23, I have the exact same experience you stated. My wife never notices a thing, but almost every time I have drink, a get a nose full of sour. I hate it. I wish I could find a fix, or I'll have to replace an almost new expensive DW.

I have a high loop installed properly and a garbage disposal, and odor from the unit and on the dishes. Never any debris in filter, as we always rinse well before putting items in the DW.

Could it be stainless Steel interiors in general??

The pump issue sounds interesting, but the unit works fine, except for the smell. I think it would be a hard sell to get the pump replaced by bosch.

We have the same problem too. We have an SHU66c and the high loop is installed correctly. We have called Bosch 4 times and each person recommended something different. We have used white vinegar (3 cups added in 10 minutes after the cycle begins) and it works for about one wash and then it starts again (we have tried this 4 times). We have also been very careful to only add a tablespoon of detergent (we've tried 4 detergents so far) and we had a service person out yesterday. He said the water isn't getting hot enough, but did no diagnostics to test it. We are fed up!

Try using more detergent and see if that helps. This thing of using 1 tablespoon of detergent. It all depends on your water conditions and how dirty the load is. If you have a very dirty poorly scraped load and you have hard water or you just have hard water or you just have a large dirty load - you need more detergent. If you have only a few dishes and they are not dirty or you have very soft water - less detergent.

In my opinion there is no such thing as only using one amount of detergent for every type of load unless you are going to toss in a detergent tablet, then in most cases you have no choice but to use the entire thing.

Try a few loads with more detergent - get Electrasol tabs and toss 1 in the main wash cup run a few loads with this and let us know if that helps with the odor.

Also if you are using a low temp energy saving cycle switch to using the normal regular cycle and see if that helps.
