dvd burner problem

I need some help here. I have Win XP - and I use Nero v7 - I have burnt many, many dvd's with movies etc. on them I usually burn them as data files and am no longer able to for some reason. I can burn a cd, but not a dvd. I have checked the dvd burner drivers (I think) - went to device mgr. stuck in the driver disk when requested and after checking a box came up saying that there are no newer drivers, so I assume they are ok.

The error msg. I get says "illegal disk error" and I have tried 3 brands of dvd-R disks (which is what I always used before. My burner works with either dvd+/- but my dvd player likes the -. Anyway - I'm at a loss as to what to do.

Something has changed - I have tried to burn different movies - even used ConvertX and converted one and tried to burn it as a full length movie.....one that I have done this with before - and I get the same "illegal disk error".

I've uninstalled Nero....used the cleaner tool - reinstalled Nero again.......same thing!

Anybody got another suggestion....please, please.

No, my burner is NEC dvd+-RW ND -6500A if that is any help.

Sorry it took me so long to answer this - it's still not working.

So with the activity light coming on we now know the power is there on both drives. Normally after that period of slower flashing it would/should start to flash much quicker indicating it is reading the CD but you do not get that. Try checking the Device manager click Start click Control panel click System click Hardware click Device manager Now in this new window look for yellow exclamation or question marks. Double click on any if they are present and see what it brings up. If no yellow marks then look for and double click on DVD/CD ROM drives, click the various tabs looking for error messages or it telling you the device is working properly. When you try a CD are you using a music CD or some software program? Try a music CD then open Windows Media Player and see what happens when you try to play the music. We might be clutching at straws here but if you exhaust all avenues before spending your money on a repairman it might be worth it.

Thanks for your imput Owbist and Ravencajun. I've done some more searching and finding. Appears that the LG internal DVD/CD I installed is a bit problematic. And yes, it does, sometimes anyway, recognize blank DVD. Last evening I was playing with it and inserted a blank DVD-R. It recognized it. Then I started a process to move a folder of 2+ Gb of photographs to it. At the point where it said click here to copy, I exited the process. Then the drive did not recognize the blank DVD. So, I put the DVD in my external burner, which is also an LG, and it recognized it. Rather than continue to troubleshoot and reseach ad infinitum, I'm just going to replace the drive. DVD recorders and DVD Burners both create DVDs buy "burning" via a laser to a blank DVD disk. However, A DVD recorder typically refers to a standalone unit that resembles and functions very much like a VCR. All DVD recorders can record from any analog video source (most can also record video from digital camcorders via firewire). Like a VCR, DVD recorders all have AV inputs as well as onboard TV tuner for recording TV shows. DVD Recorders come in several configurations: Standalone, DVD Recorder/VCR Combo, or DVD Recorder/Hard Drive combo units. Might work then you have a pc without a burner, sound like the laser in the DVD recorder mey be bad that's what recognizes the disks

I need to know what version firmware you have on the burner. Try looking in the device manager - hardware - choose the cd/dvd drives - choose your burner, right click, properties, firmware revision. Let me know if that tells you the firmware.

It sounds like you need to update it. Even so, that particular burner may not like the media you have.

Have you tried to burn a dvd at a lower speed setting? Try burning one at 4x.

I tried to follow your instructions and saw this

IDE\CDRom_NEC_DVD+-RW_ND-6500A 2.81

Hopefully this is what you want. Yes, I tried burning at a lower speed - I just keep getting the same error.

Elaine, I apologize for taking so long to get back to you.

I have attached a link so you may download newer firmware. 2.81 is from 2/25/05. 2.03E is the newest version. NECND6500A-V203E.zip is the file you want. Unzip and run the .exe file. DO NOT SHUT DOWN THE COMPUTER WHILE THE BURNER IS BEING FLASHED.

Additionally, if you are using philips media, dump them. The media is not good. Stick with TDK, Maxell, Taiyo Yuden, or Ritek RiData (my personal favorite). What brand of media are you trying to use?

I went to that spot, downloaded the correct file - unzipped and ran it - and got an error "Target is not found correctly"

I appreciate you trying to help me - and by the way - I'm using either Memorex or Imation dvd's - never had a problem with them before.
