DVD Burner Recommendations?

I've just spent the last 2 hours searching for info and but I've yet to find anything that answered my question. I'm trying to find a DVD burner that's compatible with the hardware I have and the type media I want to record on it.

I have Windows XP, Dell Dimensions 8400 and want to add a DVD burner that will be compatable with video from my Canon S5.

I've found two discussions that mentioned using Nero software with the Canon, but so far no suggestions of which DVD burner.

Any suggestions?? Am I better off contacting Dell?

Nero software should be compatable with the burner that came with the computer (Philips DBD8601 DVD +R/+RW) I'm pretty sure that is the DVD burner that comes with the machine.

Your not looking for a DVD burner, your looking for burner software right? Nero should fill all your needs.

Just speaking from my own experience, not claiming a lot of computer knowledge. I have a Compaq Desktop with XP which came equiped with a CD/DVD reader/writer that went bad. I recently bought an HP dvd 1040 external CD/DVD reader writer. It connects via USB and is working great with the Sonic hardware that came installed on my computer. The Nero software that came with the burner wouldn't work. That may be because of the other software that was installed, as I said, I'm not super computer savvy and didn't want to open the case or do a lot of messing around with installed software which I was afraid would leave me worse off than before. The system I now have works great for backing up files, reading DVDs and reading and writing CDs. It takes only a minimal amt of space on my desk as it comes with a stand which allows the unit to be set on it's side.

Surely as you progress through the instructions there should be an option to change to the external drive to burn? I am not familiar with the Ulead software.

If you place a music or data DVD or CD in the drawer does it play the music or offer to display the data? If the DVD burner is shot you would probably be better to buy an external DVD player/burner rather than replace the internal one.

You do have a DVDRW? Just a DVD drive will not burn disks. You can check in your Device Manager if you are not sure. A Ripper is software that will copy data from a DVD (or CD) to your hard drive.

Elaine, I apologize for taking so long to get back to you. I have attached a link so you may download newer firmware. 2.81 is from 2/25/05. 2.03E is the newest version. NECND6500A-V203E.zip is the file you want. Unzip and run the .exe file. DO NOT SHUT DOWN THE COMPUTER WHILE THE BURNER IS BEING FLASHED. Additionally, if you are using philips media, dump them. The media is not good. Stick with TDK, Maxell, Taiyo Yuden, or Ritek RiData (my personal favorite). What brand of media are you trying to use? Let me know how you do. I love lite-on products and that is what I replace mine with, I just recently got one from newegg, it came with Nero in the box. Works fabulous.
as an example this is the one I got, it is no longer available but there are similar ones there.

zep516........Yes, I'm looking for the burner since I only have a player on my PC. I'll check out the Philips and see if others are happy with the video transfer.
