dvd cd burner

Last February the CD burner on my HP Pavilion 302 died. I replaced it with an LG DVD CD burner and my notes of that day indicated I tested and it worked ok.

Within the past couple of months I've noticed that the drive doesn't recognize a blank DVD disk, neither R or RW. It does recognize blank CD. It does play both DVD and CD.

I don't recall if there was documentation with the unit; can't find anything. I do have an external DVD CD burner and it works very well so this is not a crises.

Any advice is welcome including SWAGs.

are you sure the one you replaced the old one with was actually a DVD burner and not just a DVD reader? There are combo drives that do CD read+ write and only DVD read.

I would run belarc advisor and see what it tells about that drive.

Bob if you use XP then the computer will not recognise blank DVDs. XP is not capable of that, Vista is. Your new DVD burner should have come with proprietary software anyway unless you bought OEM equipment.

There is an excellent freebie I use called Deep Burner, plus plenty of others too.

Surely as you progress through the instructions there should be an option to change to the external drive to burn? I am not familiar with the Ulead software.

Pam do you in fact have a DVD burner installed or only a CD burner? Look at the front of the tower and it will be visible on the CD or DVD player. If you have a DVD then there should be software. However I will caution that using a DVD for photos is daunting when you need to find a photo - unless you are far more tidy minded than I am, and that would not be difficult when it comes to sorting my photos. Taking a 1 meg photo as an example you would get close to 800 on a CD. Using a 10 megapixel camera at it's highest setting creates an image around the 3 megapixel mark so you can still expect to save close to 260 photos per CD. I have no knowledge of Picassa or anyone space oriented photo saving site, I like my photos in my possession and under my control.

I thought that if I could go online, I could email the files to myself, and open them on my new computer. But I can't go online, since my dsl modem and my wireless usb internet connection thing won't work on the old computer. So I also can't download any of the cd burning software. My cd drive that's built in to the computer says "compact disc" on the front, not cd-rw or anything that makes me think it will make a cd. I do have two usb ports on the back of the computer, so I stuck in a flash drive. Nothing about it showed on the screen, so I clicked on Control Panel and Add New Hardware. It showed Disk 2.0 which I guessed is the flash drive. I tried following the steps to install it and now it says the "device is installed, but it has a problem". It says there is no driver. I had never tried to use a flash drive on it before. I haven't used the computer since 2005. Is there a way to make the flash drive work without going online to download a driver? I'll try to figure out if there's windows media player software already on the computer and try to use the dvd/cd burner that way. Thanks for all the suggestions.

I tried my first (and only) DVD program. Asimov's Planetarium. It was a little jerky. A couple of years back I increased to 1.2 GB of RAM. Does anyone think I should get more? Thanks, again, to all. Gene Ah, that age old question to which there is not a definite answer. You said this computer is 6 year old so anything you buy today for it might not be useable in the next machine. Memory is dirt cheap these days, however you have 1.2 gigs and if you have XP then 2gigs is the limit assuming your motherboard can accept that. It should be, but wisdom suggests to check first. How many sticks and what size are the ones installed? Probably a 1gig and a 256 meg A better graphics/video card would work wonders but again, If you current motherboard has only PCI (not PCIe) or AGP the new card will be no use in a newer machine later on.

Thanks for your imput Owbist and Ravencajun.

I've done some more searching and finding. Appears that the LG internal DVD/CD I installed is a bit problematic. And yes, it does, sometimes anyway, recognize blank DVD. Last evening I was playing with it and inserted a blank DVD-R. It recognized it. Then I started a process to move a folder of 2+ Gb of photographs to it. At the point where it said click here to copy, I exited the process. Then the drive did not recognize the blank DVD. So, I put the DVD in my external burner, which is also an LG, and it recognized it.

Rather than continue to troubleshoot and reseach ad infinitum, I'm just going to replace the drive.
