WANTED: Fantastic Florida Package from Andi

WoW, did I ever get a bit of sunshine from Florida today. I got an amazing swap box from Andi.

And yes, Andi can count, I accidentally got some other presents mixed up with the swap presents. Yes, that's what I did.

"Made in the Shade" is a wonderful collection of recipes by the Junior League of Greater Fort Lauderdale. I especially like the Southwest meets Florida recipes such as Lobster Gazpacho and Tropical Guacamole and that is just for starters! As a bonus, this cookbook contains a section "Wave Reviews" which is the best-of recipes from a former best-selling cookbook this organization did and which Andi was a member. One other thing, today while having lunch with my cousin she asked me for a recipe for Cranberry Orange Bread or Poppyseed Bread, I told her I didn't have one for either. In this cookbook Andi sent, one of the first recipes I saw was the Cranberry Orange Bread and on the following page, no less, Poppyseed Almond Bread.

Then there was the cutest beach kitchen towel. I really need this with all of the rain we have been getting here in San Antonio, sunshine in the kitchen.

Then to top off the package was a beautiful set of silver salad servers, with shells and starfish on the handles. The picture really doesn't do them justice, but trust me they are exquisite. I have been looking for a salad serving set since we moved to SA as my set got destroyed in our move. I couldn't never find a set I really liked.

Andi's explanation of the gifts were great:

Salad Servers - the ocean is represented by the servers.

Towel - "Nothing better than reclining in a cabana on the beach and watching the ocean waves"

Cookbook - "After a day at the ocean, you need some "Shade."

Andi, what a terrific swap package, I love everything and can't wait to try some of the recipes, the towel is already in the kitchen, and I will think of you every time I use the beautiful set of salad servers.

Andi, thank you for the personal note, it was nice getting to know you a little better and I wish you still made the biz trips to SA.

Hahahaha, this is so terrible. Soultan, put me down for one Blossom Peacock and could you add one order of Chinese Sacred Lilies? I'm a bit worried though, if you look on Nature Hill's website, they have "Peppermint" under a totally different picture (almost looks like Fairytale) so I don't know if that's a sign that they'll have mislabeled bulbs? But what the heck, put me down for one Ferrari as well. Could you update me on where we are in terms of the remaining balance of the package? Thanks Soultan. =)

Lori, I have somewhat small fingers myself, and so it fits comfortably on my hand. I wanted to start peeling something with it as soon as I got it, but I didn't have anything to peel! I plan to try it on apples and potatoes, when I get some. I tested the strainer, and it works fine. At first I thought the holes might be too small or not enough of them, but that is not the case. It looks very pretty hanging on a rack with my other utensils. I plan to install the magnetic knife holder this week-end, when I can get DB to help. I don't like using hammers or screwdrivers, but he does. I'm also going to use some of the wasabi-ginger sauce this week-end when we grill outside - it's gotten quite a bit cooler here now - it's 70° and overcast - not quite warm enough to hang out laundry, but my ginger plants will like it. The homemade marmalade is a terrific gift! I love the homemade jams/jellies/preserves/marmalades. The cookbook sounds like one I'd really enjoy. I'll have to check it out. The spice blend sounds great, too. I can's see the pix in the OP, but I see the bowl downthread. It's beautiful. Sure would like to see the kitty toy!! Enjoy your treats! Great job Marcia!

Regional cookbooks are my favs! And I can't seem to buy enough of 'em.

Love...love...love the serving set! You will use this so much! The towel is too darn cute!

Junior League cookbooks are among my favorites. They are usually tried and true family recipes. Some of my favorite dishes have come from them. This one looks like a winner!

The kitchen beach towel and silver (!) salad servers are wonderful.

What a nice package (and what was in the other three boxes??)

Brenda, I am so glad you received the package!! I was unable to get online last night to check the promptness of UPS. I enjoyed shopping for you and am glad you like everything. The cookbook has some wonderful recipes that I hope will become some of your favorites.

PS - The two pick packages were "just because" gifts for Brenda's beautiful granddaughter. I could not send a package without something for Aleksi - a beach coloring book and a manatee book. This was non-swap related!!!

Love the servers and the cookbook. However I think Andi should have at least sent a "cabana boy" to go with that "cabana towel"! (Oops, that would have been more than 3 items, wouldn't it?) hehe!

I love it all, Brenda...enjoy!

Those salad servers are unique and beautiful and I think the cabana boy would have gone nicely with the towel, a set, doncha know? LOL

Well, I guess you could have included a cabana boy and not broken the rules...LOL. I'm sure a good pic or two would be in order too.

Really, that is a nice theme and swap box. I hope Brenda shares a recipe out of the cookbook I'm a fan of regional favorites too. Love the beach towel kitchen towel!! Great package Andi!!

Well, since Andi did spill the beans about Aleksi's treats, I will post a pic tomorrow. Andi asked that I not mention the gifts for Aleksi, so I followed her wishes.

But you know me, I love to take pics of the little one, she's a pirate this week, arrrrrrr, I will post tomorrow.

Aleksi called Andi and thanked her in person. She really liked the shells, book and coloring book, especially since she had a taste of the beach a month ago.

Andi, I really, really appreciated you thinking of Aleksi and I did not mention it earlier as you had asked me not to. Well, you already know that Aleksi loved them!

Oh such a fun theme. Yes a cabana boy to dry dishes would have been a nice extra touch, but the towel is certainly fun on its own.

I'm curious about "Tropical" guacamole; what makes it tropical besides the fact that avocados do not grow in the tundra?

Lovely gifts Andi, and how nice of you to send some non swap things for Aleksi.

Lee, here's the recipe for the "Tropical Guacamole Dip", which the papaya lends it name to. Anyone know what a scotch bonnet pepper is?

Tropical Guacamole Dip

1 red onion, cut into quarters
1 papaya, coarsely chopped
2 avocados, coarsely chopped
1 tomato, peeled, coarsely chopped
2 green onions, chopped
3 T. chopped fresh cilantro
2 cloves of garlic minced
1/2 Scotch bonnet pepper, minced
1/4 cup lime juice
1 T. cumin
1 t. hot pepper sauce
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/8 t. pepper

Combine ... [first 8 ingredients] in bowl and mix well. Add ... [remaining ingredients] and mix well. Serve with tortilla chips or platain chips. Serves 10 to 15

Sounds yummy, doesn't it? I think I'll make chicken fajitas this weekend and serve that along with "Mango Papaya Relish" instead of pico de Gallo, which is also in this wonderful cookbook.

That guac sounds good for summer. I alway pick up and put down papayas because I can't think of what to do with them, and this sounds creative. 'Scotch bonnets', I think, are small, HOT peppers.

VERY nice salad servers!

Anything to give Aleski a smile - she deserves it.

I want to see the cabana boy wearing the towel.
