Interesting. This happens to me when the battery on my wireless keyboard and/or mouse starts to run low. But usually not both at the same time.

How was your migration from XP Pro to 7 Pro? Smooht? I too have XP Pro but it kills me to see all the stuff that needs to be upgraded on a 2-year old PC.

And what kind of mouse/keyboard is this? If wireless, have you tried using wired devices to see if the problem goes way. Fresh batteries for wireless?

As a thought, on occasion applications running in the background will over-demand resources freezing the keyboard and the mouse. Since you report things are OK in Safe Mode you might want to check what is running.

Wired keyboard and mouse. I guess it's possible for there to be a conflict between the two, but I wouldn't know how to go about resolving something like that. I unplugged the keyboard this morning to see if that has any effect on the situation. I'll report on that later.

The transition from XP to 7 went pretty well. Be sure to back up anything you might want to keep on something external because the installation wipes the old partition and puts it into a folder called "Old Windows". I didn't check to see if I could reinstall anything from that folder as I already had everything I wanted to keep and all the programs on external sources. Other than that it was smooth as silk. Took about 45 minutes though.

On occasion, I've had a wired USB mouse hang up, and I did not need to do a re-boot: unplugging the mouse and then plugging it in a few seconds later will cause it to be recognized again.

I have had the same thing happen as kudzu9, doing the unplug and replug would cause it to start working again.
What I found was causing my problem was McAfee, the minute I removed McAfee from the pc none of those problems ever happened again(plus many more weird problems). So definitely could be a conflict somewhere, also cables can and do go bad as do plugs so you might try a different mouse and or keyboard to rule out it being just one particular one.

Thanks Kudzu9, but no such luck. I've already bought a replacement machine but would like to get this one back for my son. Seems odd that it had the same problem in XP pro and 7 pro also. Even more puzzling to me is it works fine and forever in safe mode. Wish I knew what to stop in the background to make it work all the time. Was going to try formatting the drive and starting over with a clean install but the keyboard locked up in DOS as well. (lol) I've been messing with these things for about 18 years,(8088 first machine) but this has me buffaloed.

It can't be the mouse or the keyboard themselves as "Everything works fine in safe mode."

I would try disabling all applications running in startup, verify the keyboard and mouse are working properly, then add one application at a time verifying the proper operation each time. If that doesn't do it I would look at the services of all add-on installed software.

also what browser are you using and do you have add on's installed? I would try using the browser in safe mode with all add ons disabled and see if there is a difference some add ons can cause conflicts.

I agree with DA on a conflict somewhere if it works in safe mode and not with other apps running, rule them out one by one.

what antivirus program is running on this machine? and what firewall?

Was using Firefox when I could. I have now formatted the drive and am doing a clean install of 7 pro. Will report later on how/if this works. If it doesn't, I'm about ready for my ol' double barrel. :-)

Well, so much for that idea. With no programs other than Windows 7 on the hard drive, it still freezes.

have you tried a completely different keyboard and mouse and have you tried different cables? I would for sure try that.
Are these usb plug in devices or are they ps2 plugs? Is there any type of plug converter being used?

Low RAM can cause freeze ups and now that you are running 7 you really need more RAM. Is it showing your full amount of RAM working?
I would try running a belarc and see exactly what it says is in the machine.

I am assuming this is a desktop, have you opened the side of tower and cleaned it out really good recently, heat build up can also cause freeze ups, dust can cause heat.

It has 2gb of memory and it checked out ok (Memory Diagnostics Tool). Am running error checking on the hard drive now. So far nothing there either. Most diagnostic programs won't run in safe mode and it locks up before they can complete in regular mode. I cleaned it good when this first started. Two things baffle me, the same problem occurs in XP and Windows 7 both, and it will run in safe mode forever. I left it on in safe mode all night and it was still up and running this morning. That makes me think it's in the software somewhere, but how would it carry over after a format and clean install of 7??? Really puzzled, but not defeated, YET!!!!!! Thanks to all of you for you help. Will keep you informed on any progress.

again please answer the questions so we can better help you, have you tried a completely different keyboard and mouse, have you tried different cables, is this a usb or ps2 connection, is there a plug converter involved anywhere(ps2 to usb etc), and is there a kvm switch anywhere in the mix?
If the same keyboard and mouse and cables were the same on xp as on 7 it absolutely could show the same issues in both if one or more of those were faulty which is why it is so important to rule all of that out.

Even though one is wired and one is not, are the keyboard and mouse the original combo? If not, did you use a disk to install drivers for either or both of them? Perhaps a reinstall of the drivers.

If they are original I am giving thought to the drivers being corrupt or somehow rolled back to pre XP. Inf folders carry a lot of drivers in them even dated ones.

Windows updates and system setting changes can do a lot of odd things.

I am also wondering if these are after market additions if the drivers are W7 compatible.

Have you tried removing the two items from the Device Manager and rebooting so Windows detects new hardware?

In the Control panel there should be entries for both hardware. Open each and inspect that each is set to default settings.

Just a few thoughts rattling around in my mind.

As ravencajun said it's important to answer questions because it makes troubleshooting easier. Based on what you describe - the same problem with two different operating systems that doesn't happen in safe mode with either O/S I'm inclined to think there's a conflict at the hardware level. If you've been around since 8088 days, you remember IRQs and maybe manually adjusting those?

- If you are using a PS/2 (round connector, typically green and purple) make sure you have the plugged into the right place. We all make mistakes.

- If you are using a USB connection (small rectangular connector), try a different USB port. If you are using any kind of USB hub, make sure the mouse/keyboard is plugged directly into the machine. If you have a USB add-on card, plug the mouse/keyboard cable(s) into a onboard (motherboard) port. Just for grins you can try the opposite too to rule out any port problems.

- Check with the manufacturer of the motherboard or computer for an updated BIOS or chipset drivers

- If you have any add-on peripheral cards (network, sound, video capture, etc.) trying removing them temporarily or moving them to another slot.

- Borrow or buy another mouse/keyboard, preferably one that is wired. While most mass merchants (Best Buy, etc.) get a little expensive for that kind of stuff, computer stores (Micro Center, etc.) usually have really cheap mice/keyboards sitting on the bottom shelf somewhere. You can also try a Mom 'n Pop computer store, they typically have used stuff cheap.

best place I have found to buy good but very inexpensive stuff like that is Big Lots, I have bought many name brand mice there and they also have name brand keyboards all extremely cheap also cables. They get the overstock items from the big box stores and from those going out of biz.

OK, let's look at this a different way as far as conflicts.

In the short time that the mouse does work while in regular mode look in the Task Manager and write down what is running. Now reboot into Safe Mode. Look in Task Manager and write down what is running. Please review what has been eliminated between the two and post the results here.

Sorry I didn't get back to everyone yesterday, had to take a day off and rest my old eyes and brain. You ready for this? Disabled the video card and everything is fine now except not enough power/video memory to run anything except just the basics. Won't even run a screen saver, so, I guess I go digging through my junk pile today for another video card. Thank you all for your ideas and help. I can always depend on this group for excellent input.

Interesting. Glad your concern is resolved. If you have time could you share the system manufacturer and identify the video card. The information may help another in the future.

It's a MicroFlex I think 65B. Nvidia 7200 video card. The machine is about 5-6 years old and has never been shut down for more than a few minutes at a time. I am not unhappy with the performance of the machine for the years I have owned it and am happy I can get it serviceable again for only a few dollars. I plan to reload the original OS and use it for a backup, or maybe give it to someone who really needs it. The battered women's shelter here is always needing gaming computers for the kids to play games on.
