Staub Dutch/French ovens

Does anyone use/have these pots. A friend of mine recomended this company and right now I found decent deal on e-bay and some good deals on Amazon. Is Staub just as good as Le Creuset? I tried to get some reviews, but couldn't find any and only found rave reviews for the LC. What are your opinions? Worth spending the money?

A few months ago I was going through this same thing. I found good reviews for the Staub and decided to try it out. I bought my Basix Staub 6 qt Dutch Oven from QVC. It comes with a Lid and Trivet. Right now the price is $71.76 - see link below.

The Le Creuset 6-3/4 qt Oval French Oven is on Amazon for $214.99. I decided back then that the price difference was enough for me to go ahead and try out the Staub and I'm glad I did. I think it works very well. Now I don't have a Le Creuset to compare against...but since the Staub fits the bill and is more affordable, I don't feel like I need to search further.

The Basix Staub sold on QVC is not the same as the regular line of Staub, although I'm sure it's very serviceable and an excellent value.

So be sure that you're comparing the same level of oven, annal029. The regular line of Staub is definitely comparable to Le Creuset. I have two Staub oval ovens and one Le Creuset round oven. I love them both.

Although you can look at both websites to see the difference between the two lines of cookware, here are just a few:

Staub has brass or stainless knobs/handles; Le Creuset uses phenolic knobs that limit the allowable heat level to 400 degrees.

Staub has self-basting spikes underneath the lid that supposedly ensure continuous basting. Although Le Creuset now has a model or two with the spikes, most of their products have a smooth lid.

Le Creuset has a smooth light-colored enamel interior; Staub has a black matte enamel interior. Some people don't like the black interior because they think it's more difficult to see whether you've cleaned it well.

You'll find fans of both lines.

In the days before modern ovens, cast iron dutch ovens were used for baking, I believe, and used in wood fires, either outdoors or in a fireplace. Cast iron dutch ovens of that design are still being sold for use in campfires. They have three small legs which allow them to stand stably in a bed of coals and a rim around the top of the lid to retain a layer of coals heaped on top. Dutch ovens are being used in some bread baking methods, however this is done inside the regular oven, not on the stove top. The dutch oven serves as a cloche to hold in steam. That's a long way of saying, "Yes, dutch ovens can be used for baking, but probably not for stove top baking because a stove top burner will apply heat only to the bottom". Jim

phrog - I'm not sure of the answer to the 1st question. I've not had this problem with any of my Staub. WRT the 2nd question - I had a few pieces of Le Creuset before I got turned onto Staub by watching Alton Brown. The Le Creuset is nice, but I love my Staub so much that I am planning some open shelving in the kitchen of our new house just so I can display my collection. It is just so beautiful and I use it so much that I want it out in the open. (Also easier to get it off of a shelf rather than out of a cabinet.) They say you can use Staub out of the box w/o seasoning, but it does get more non-stick as you use it. I was always a soupmaker, but now I make my own marinara sauce. I was inspired to do Alton Brown's coq au vin (OMG!!!!!) and last weekend I made boeuf bourguignon that DH went crazy about. This weekend, I'm going to try the dutch oven slow rise bread. As silly as it sounds, I think that I am attempting more interesting dishes just because it is such a pleasure to work with and handle my lovely Staub pots. I am another Le Creuset fan. I have a number of DO in different sizes, pots and skillets. I find they are so versatile and easy to clean. I can make deep fried foods, soups, roasts, breads, stews, roast a chicken all in one pot no need for a ton of different pots. I have a neurological condition in my hands and I am able to lift my 7 1/2 qt and my 9 1/2 qt fine when they are full any bigger and I would have problems. I have used them at high heat, low heat, all day in the oven and honestly never had an issue with the knobs. Mine are from the Le Crueset outlet too. I have a couple of regular cast iron skillets but find I prefer enameled cast iron over the non. Maybe I just am not that great at getting the non enameled seasoned right or something but I usually have problems cleaning them or food sticking so enameled works better for me. I honestly could not live with out my Le Crueset and yes they are pricey even with buying them from the outlet but for as long as they last and how versatile they I think they are worth every penny and someday hope to get even more pieces.

I have a 7.5 qt oval Le Creuset and I bought it on impulse for a good sale price and it has caused me to buy more pieces. Actually waiting on my Braising one that I ordered last week now. I'm looking to slowly replace all my pots and pans with Le Creuset as I like how easy they are to clean and how even everything cooks. I stick them in the dishwasher sometimes and sometimes by hand as it depends on how full my dishwasher is. None of mine are the same color either as I like the idea of different colors to easy see which pot/pan to use. I also have a Staub pan that I really like, but recently got a smaller Le Creuset pan in a smaller size and it is easier to clean than my Staub and although both say they are seasoned and ready to go the Le Creuset has been easier to care for than my Staub pan. edit to add - they do bring me joy every time I take them out as I like the colors of them. Mine are all in the blue family.

I wasn't aware of the Basix line. I was looking at their regular line. Thank you very much for the tips on both lines. I'll most likely stick to my original pick and go ahead with Staub since I found a better deal on it than LC.

I didn't like Le Creuset initially for the visual. I thought the colors were 70s-ish and the black knob did nothing for it. I had used it previously in a risotto cooking class. Staub is on sale through Amazon.com so I got the starter set even though I would have preferred another color. Having just got it, I think the 5 quart is a good size and have cancelled my premature order for the 2 quart size. However, I spent $30 for the griddle pan and the roasting dish when I could have ordered a 5 quart in another color e.g. chartreuse. I spent the money because of vanity at owning pieces by Staub. The nipples in the lid are unique to Staub and now imitated by Mario Batali and the ice cube lid on a particular Le Creuset. I also am avoiding Le Creuset because the novelty casseroles are made in Thailand. Irish oatmeal spurtles out on medium in my Staub.

ossienyc, I'm curious as to why you choose to cook oatmeal in a Staub dutch oven. I guess I just think of using mine more for braising, roasting, or stewing. Wouldn't a nonstick pot suit you better for something like oatmeal?
