Cleaning rust off cast iron skillet, and what to cook in it?
Comments (25)Got reunited with CI a few years ago when I found 3 different size "name-brand" (Lodge, griswold, etc.) skillets for next to nothing at a yard sale. It took SEVERAL applications of oven cleaner to get the unknown GOOK off. I reseasoned like my Grandmother always did... HOT pan and a dab of bacon grease smeared all over... inside and out. As for cleaning, if cooking something "dry" like eggs... once pan was seasoned, only needed to be wiped out with paper towel. If something "wet"... scrape with metal spatula... HOT water, cheap salt and a scrubber. Then on burner till hot and another dab of BG. IMO, KEY to cast iron is USE IT!! I think it's easy to find... CHEAP at yard sales, thrift stores, flea markets... cuz it is HEAVY and some people think it's "old-fashioned"... they don't know what they're missing. When I first started "collecting" CI, stored several pieces in oven. Then noticed minor rust?? Figure from steam coming off whatever was cooking while pieces were sitting there. Just scrubbed it off, a little more BG... but I moved pieces to where I saw them everyday and then use them frequently....See MoreWhat's for dinner? #265

My salad disappeared as did Ann's candles...I mistakenly deleted the photos from picturetrail and poof, no more. Lesson learned = keep uploading and increasing the tariff. LOL Upgrade ahead of me. Michelle, that is one gorgeous plate. Hum, just as I asked myself where you got the corn, then I read the answer. Looks yummy. Bubbe (who is heading for the kitchen)...See MoreWhat's for dinner #267?
Comments (101)Nancy, The fish and chips look yummy.... Here's the recipe Chicken Asparagus Casserole Nonstick cooking spray 1 can cream of asparagus soup (I used fresh cooked asparagus; about 12, and cream of chicken soup) 1/2 can milk 1/2 pint sour cream (1 cup) 12 corn tortillas (I use white corn) 8 chicken breast halves, cooked, shredded into bite-sized pieces (I cook mine in the oven 350 for 40 mins with salt and pepper on them; more flavor that way) 1 can green chilies, diced (I use the hot ones, we like it that way) 1 pound cheddar cheese, shredded (I use mozzarella; less calories) and just sprinkle a 1/4 cup of cheddar on top. 1 can ripe olives, sliced Spray a 9 x 13 pan with the nonstick spray. In a bowl, combine soup, milk and sour cream (and asparagus). Cover the bottom of the pan with a layer of soup mixture, then 2 layers of tortilla's' a layer of chicken, a layer of green chilies, then a layer of cheese; repeat. Sprinkle with sliced olives. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Enjoy........... Linda...See MoreChristmas Menus...?
Comments (40)Since it was just the two of us (DB and me), we went out, which is our tradition on such holidays. It was difficult to find a place open (except near the beach), but many places in the Marina had brunch specials, and so we ending up going to the Warehouse Restaurant in Marina Del Rey. I had a 12 oz. (small size) prime rib au jus (medium rare) with horseradish sauce, garlic mashed potatoes, and green beans. Kevin had turkey breast with cornbread stuffing and gravy, green beans, mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce. We also had hot dinner rolls. There was so much food that we took half of it back with us. I saved the extremely rare part of the prime rib and will have it tonight. We had our meal at 1:00 p.m., and for dinner we had spicy chicken tamales (which Kevin bought from someone at work - made by a co-worker's mother!) with green salsa, broccoli rice, bean dip, guacamole, and tortilla chips. We follow the tamales at Christmas tradition, and these were especially good - much better than what I have bought at stores, although she was a bit heavy handed with the chilies, which is why we needed all the side dishes! The Warehouse Restaurant was a lot of fun, and even though it is extremely close to my house (and we drive by it every time we go to Ralphs supermarket), we had never been there. They have a very nice koi pond in front with a fake dock that you can walk out onto. It was very sunny while we were there, but 30 minutes after we got home, we had another downpour of rain. I guess we had good timing. Lars...See Moreplllog
