I just bought a Dell Laptop (Vista) and Windows Defender came with it. Why do you have a yellow explanation mark on the bottom on my screen over Windows Defender? I update it and scan.....

If you right click on the explanation mark do you get any options there that may help you.

Also do you have windows live one care installed?

When I right click the only options I have are OPEN or EXIT. I open and click updates...and it says no updates are available that I am Up to date. I scan... but I still have that yellow exclamation mark..

No,I do not have windows live one care installed...

My computer is fully updated. I did Google the error, which, by the way is 0x80004003 (not 2) and found one suggestion which must have been before the beta2 version. I did find that if I opened the program from the Start menu I could run the scan with no problem. So I guess this is just a bug. Did find quite a few entries for this error. I may just uninstall the program and later try a re-download and install.

I believe Windows Defender is integrated into the OS and couldn't be uninstalled even if you wanted to...unless of course you were willing to risk damaging something else. If you launch Defender manually, you can click TOOLS>>OPTIONS, then scroll to the bottom and uncheck the box marked USE WINDOWS DEFENDER if you want to disable it. I don't think it will conflict with avast! but would be very surprised if it finds a bona fide nasty that avast! does not.

Do Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up your Task Manager, click on the Processes tab, and click once or twice on the CPU tab at the top of the listings: this will show what process is chewing up the most resources (which will probably be the culprit). Also, look at the CPU Usage line at the bottom of Task Manager and see what the % Usage is. Then report back here on what you found out.

If Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Defender are both running, your system may experience performance degradation and other problems caused by the conflict of two services providing real time protection simultaneously. Microsoft Security Essentials disables Defender on install for that reason as it will handle ,Virus, Trojans ect. as well as spyware that Defender was assigned to. If it say's do not remove the files then don't there isolated from the computer and can't do any harm.

I cannot find much about this error except that it does appear to be some update issue, at this time I would suggest visiting the windows update page and see if there is possible up date for Defender that's all I can offer for now and will look around to see what else or if anyone has had the problem and a solution to it.

I know there was a very recent update released by windows update for defender so that may be what it is flagging?? try doing as zep suggested and go to the actual windows update site and letting it scan to see if it comes up with one.
