" I think this depends on the particular software, the intended message and context of the conversation. Just as an example (not intended as proselytizing), I use what I think of as Norton Anti Virus. But it's really the Norton Internet Security system. It's a suite of many, many programs and routines that handle a large number of functions. Website reputation, antivirus-malware-spyware-phishing blocking and removal, firewall, temp file cleanup, safety of files downloaded from websites or emails, email scanning, and on and on. Other than the occasional message that pops up, it's invisible. AND, it schedules scans on the fly for only when the PC is not in use. It never interrupts or delays other activity. I never touch it, never schedule anything, and almost never see anything. I think all the best in class products (there are maybe 4 or 5 best choices) are similar to what I described, comprehensive "systems". They're well worth the modest annual cost.

you can use malwarebytes on 64systems mine runs fine on my 32 and 64 OS. No problem having the malwarebytes and superantispyware both on the pc along with your antivirus programs since they are on demand scanners and do not run full time, what you can not do is run 2 full time antivirus programs at the same time. Just always remember to update the programs before running the scans. The other program I suggest to everyone is spywareblaster, you do not have to run any scans just open it once a week and hit the update button then hit the enable all protection button so the shield turns green and you are good to go. Running 2 firewalls will deteriorate performance. The 2 firewalls will fight each other. However, there should be a firewall running before allowing your computer to connect with the internet. If Avast has a firewall, then one of these firewall should be disabled. If Avast does not have a firewall, by all means, run the Windows firewall, Your computer may connect with the internet during boot-up, or immediately afterward, if software settings are set to check for updates, and if your internet connection is "live" at that time.
