No offense taken. I never recommend realtime applications other than a single AV. Without this limitation a user could inundate there system with applications running in the background which would demand resources and possibly conflict with one another. For all the postive service they could provide the potential negativity is there too. A user has to accept some responsibility for awareness, and protection such as frequent scheduled scans. urlee, Like 'genes' and 'raven' said, you should not have more than one antivirus program running at the same time. If you plan on keeping Avast I would uninstall AVG either by using 'Programs/AVG/AVG uninstall' or 'Control Panel'. To answer your question: To disable AVG, right click on the AVG icon in the system tray (by the clock), and click on 'Quit AVG Control Center', that will shut down AVG. It will start up again however, if you should reboot your computer. To stop AVG from restarting on reboot go to the MS Config Utility, click 'Start', click 'Run', type in (msconfig) without the quotes and click 'OK'. In the 'System configuration utility' select the 'Startup' tab and deselect (uncheck) the box by 'avgcc' (avgcc.exe/startup). You will be asked to restart your computer, select 'Restart'. After your computer restarts you will get a 'nag' notification box that you have made changes to the Configuration Utility. 'Check' the box 'Do not show me this message again' and click ok. To have AVG start again with Windows go back into the Config Utility, recheck 'avgcc'. You will receive the same prompts again. Witz

abreeze has there been any other antivirus on that pc at all prior to your trying to install AVAST? did it come pre loaded with anything? It really sounds like it is having a conflict and that happens most often with remnants of a prior AV on the pc. AVIRA is a good product, it does have a nag screen but there is a way to stop that if you can do a little googling for it. Running 2 firewalls will deteriorate performance. The 2 firewalls will fight each other. However, there should be a firewall running before allowing your computer to connect with the internet. If Avast has a firewall, then one of these firewall should be disabled. If Avast does not have a firewall, by all means, run the Windows firewall, Your computer may connect with the internet during boot-up, or immediately afterward, if software settings are set to check for updates, and if your internet connection is "live" at that time.
