you can not schedule a scan with Avast like you do some other programs, but the easy way to have it scan is to set the screen saver scan, anytime the screen saver is on the scan starts, it stops when you move the mouse then restarts where it left off when the screen saver starts again, that is how I use mine, if you go to the Avast site there are 2 pdf guides that you should read on how to use Avast and set up your scans and also to choose to do the boot scan or not. It is not a good idea to keep your pc turned off and disconnected from the internet, when you get on it and connect you then are way behind in updates not only for your antivirus but for windows.

I was really planning on going to bed, but Owbist's uncovering of my not really "lost post" prodded me into action! :) I just powered up my XP machine and discovered that MSE was no longer turned off! It downloaded the latest updates and I'm thrilled to see it working again. Bob, I never entertained the thought of removing MSE from this pc since I use it sparingly. When I checked the Add/Remove Programs on my desktop, it is there. Thanks, Owbist, for your suggestion to use Teamviewer. That would be perfect, but my sister is not able to use the computer. Mikie, I'll check for the version of MSE when I return to my sister's. If it's still turned off and refuses to update, I will do the manual uninstall and reinstall it. There's lots of things that could cause those kinds of problems, including something on Netflix's end. An upgrade may be indicated when there are enough new features in the operating system to justify the expense of the new operating system. Of course, my definition of "justify" may not be quite the same as yours. You also need to ensure that your computer can meet the requirements of a new operating system. Generally speaking any computer bought with Windows XP is not likely to have sufficient memory or processing power to make running Windows 7 enjoyable. You might want to consider backing up critical data and doing a fresh install of XP. Cleaning out the old garbage can make a world of difference in the performance of an older computer. Plus there's no financial investment, just time.

If you would have jumped in earlier and told her to boot to Safe Mode and run MBAM this is what would have happened. All programs would have been gone and the malware would have won! Some malware does not even run in Safe Mode. Most of the threats now days installs a rootkit. Tell me..how do you remove a rootkit? If your are as good as you think you are then you would know the answer! If you were a professional then you would know that ASC is bad because it includes a Registry cleaner.
