Terry Love please give your advice

I have purchased the Toto Vespin II for our MB, (new construction) because of your recommendation on GW & your website. My husband (who is doing the plumbing along with a (commercial) master plumber friend, is helping. We have radiant floor heating in the slab, finished with 3/8" porcelein tile. My DH comes home last night and informs me we can't install it because there is not enough room (rough in 11.5in.). He said he'd have to knock a hole in the wall to get it to fit!! From my research last night, it looks like there is a uni-fit rough in either 10 or 14 inches that I can get. Could you please advise what the best way to proceed with installing the Toto that I have my heart set on? There is plenty of room to move the toilet forward (away from the wall) TIA!!

stayn2busy, Terry posts here occasionally, but not often. I'm pretty sure the part you need is the Outlet Connection for a 10" rough-in: TSU01W.10R -- but do NOT take my word for it. I suggest you simply call Toto customer support; they'll talk you through your situation to make sure you know what part you need. They were very pleasant and helpful the couple times I called them during my toilet research. 1-888-295-8134.

I'd also note that to install the Toto unifit rough-in you will have to drill four holes into your tile floor. (This Toto mount is different than most toilets which simply attach to the two bolts coming up from the toilet flange in the floor.) Aside from the pain of drilling holes in tile (read: get a few extra drill bits!), you'll potentially be going into the radiant heat mat. Do you know how closely it was installed near the rear of the toilet? Do you have any pictures of the radiant floor mat before it was covered by thinset and tile? The area you're concerned with is 7" back from the flange toilet bolts (for the 10" rough-in), and slightly wider than the flange toilet bolts. If the radiant heat mat wasn't installed there, you have no concerns. If it was, I don't know whether it's a problem or not that you'll be drilling holes into the floor, but I wanted to make you aware of the potential for trouble. (Hopefully one of the tile experts can chime in on this.)

Two other thoughts: if you use the 10" rough-in, just be aware that the back of your toilet will be further away from the wall than normal. I don't think there's any problem with this, unless it bothers you aesthetically.

BUT... you may not need to use the 10" rough-in. Have you actually measured to see whether the Toto would work at 12" with your set-up? I've read that there is some leeway, and you might be okay with 1/4" less space. Our Toto toilets have approximately 3/4" between the back of the toilet and the wall; if that was 1/2" for you, you might be fine.

Ouch and double crapola...After the extensive research I have done on these seeds. I have found they need wet soil for the first three days. You were only misting? I would drench the soil with water and see what happens. Make sure you use a dome and heat. I have had decent germination on mine some did not come up but that is to be expected. Linda how are yours doing? Eloise is your soil wet too? I know you are trying outside. They should be soaked prior to planting too.....This is what I have learned about them...Tj I will see what I have left after my RR'S They are mixes though and not named just pictuers of the mixes. I do have double plants but they are slow growers. They come up and just sit there. I have ones I did a fewmonths ago and they are still the same size...Weather? No sunlight and not under lights....If they get bigger maybe in summer I can send you some of my doubles...Barb

New to growing Chives, please give me your advice!

Hi TomatoZesty, I have a chives growing in a 8 inch wide pot. They have been in the pot for five years and I have never had any problem with them. _When do you recommend sowing the seeds? Please keep in mind i'm in Northern California. It feels like Spring is weeks away. The packet says to sow in February. I would wait until the weather warms up. _Do you direct seed? Start indoors? I don't direct seed, I start indoors. I don't remember if I started these from seed or not. Sometimes I put the seeds between two damp, slight wet paper towels. I put that inside a Ziploc bag. I check it daily after about four days. When they have started to sprout, I pick them out and plant in my pot. A lot of work, but then it's a for sure result. _How thick do you sow them? Do you thin them? I never thin them. _Do you grow them in plastic containers with success? Mine are in a clay pot. _Do you grow them in wooden boxes with success? Don't see any reason you couldn't. _Do you grow them in the ground with success? For some reason I have not had the same success. _Do they tolerate heat? Full Sun? etc? Mine grow in direct sun. _Are the plants edible after flowering? Yes, you can even eat the flowers. Here's a picture. Obviously with winter they don't look as good as spring/summer. I fertilize with an organic fertilizer. Good luck!

Eric, THANK YOU so much for your advice! I will def call Toto CS and see what they have to say. He came home last night and tells me that the standard "water" comes in at 6" and needs to be 8" (or vice versa--can't remember) and that couldn't be done either!!! I will see what Toto has to say--- thanks again!!

The Vespin II will install at 11.25" from the wall and the water supply can be 6" to the left of center.

The original Vespin needed 7"

It's a pretty easy installation requiring standard wax ring, closet bolts and drilling the floor to accept screws to install the Unifit adapter.

These comes as a 12" rough toilet and with the adapters can be 10" or 14".

I have one at the moment in my main bath with a bidet seat. The one below I installed for a customer.
