'merging' flash drives??

First couple of flash drives I got were 512... actually give-aways at workshops. No BIG files on them and still room available. Then have a few 1G and one 2G.

Is there a way to EASILY dump everything from the smaller drives (a few have very little on them) onto the 2G?? Some of the files have such ambiguous names (my fault) that I'm not sure if I want them. Would like to consolidate all files onto largest drive and then go thru at my leisure and get rid of unwanted stuff.

OH... and I'm a total NON-techie, so if you can help me... PLEASE KIS!?!

This is what I would do I would create a new folder on my pc put it on the desktop if that will be more convenient, I would move all the files from the small flash drives into that folder, then you can view them easily and determine which to save or delete, then once they are all there in that folder I would plug in the big flash drive and just move or copy that entire folder to the bigger drive, you can right click on the folder and select to send to and select the flash drive in the list. Then if you do not want those files on the pc simply right click and delete the entire folder once it is done.
Remember to always use the safely remove icon in the tray by the clock before removing flash drives from the pc.

Yes, I would do exactly as Raven suggests. Then if the data had value I would also burn it to a DVD so I had 2 copies of my 'special stuff' on different media before removing the folder from the desktop.

Insert flash drive in USB port. Open Windows Explorer by right clicking on the Start button and click Windows Explore. If Win8 the folder shows on the taskbar when in the desktop. Drill down the left side for the flash drive, click the plus sign or triangle depending on which windows to drop down the menu or if only the movie files just click to highlight and the files appear on the right side. Right click on each file and click to rename in the pop up menu then simply add 10, 02 to 20 to the beginning of each video in the required order, clicking OK each time and you should be good to go. I think there's two issues at work with your comment mikie. The first, which many historians have spoken about, is that the lost habits of letter and diary writing mean that much less material will be available for historical analysis in the future. Email archives aren't as common as boxes stuffed with old letters, and email archives typically have much more worthless stuff in them. The second thing, the changes in storage media over time, I think isn't so much of a problem. There used to be lots of stuff stored on 8 and 5.25 inch floppy disks. They're not lost to the future, that worth keeping was migrated to later generations of storage media. Places like the Library of Congress and National Archives are digitizing many parts of their collections to protect the availability of their contents for the future. All that stuff gets rolled forward as technology changes.

Gene, I never noticed or heard of that before. If these pictures are special to you may I recommend multi-copies over various media with a disk and a thumb drive at a minimum. The estimated life cycle of storage media is still in its infancy stage and are only approximations/estimates/guesses. No one really knows what the future may bring. So why not give yourself a little insurance by doing so. You may consider free on-line storage also. DA

The fact the computer said it was not recognised shows the computer is aware 'something' had been attached. As Kudzu notes, it may be defective. You could ask a family member or friend to try it in another computer to confirm that. You could burn the photos to a CD to give away if you do not want to buy another flash drive.

First, THANK YOU for all your information. Second, PLEASE don't take this as being ungrateful... but not quite as step-by-step as I need!! As a total NON techie, I think I'm missing a lot of stuff your advice assumes I know?!?

Was told at another board to plug in bigger flash drive and others, one-by-one. Then copy from them to final destination. Was fine at first. Opened smaller drive, highlighted files... then couldn't figure how to "cut/paste"?? Though not a techie, consider myself to know enough about computers to make myself DANGEROUS!! After a few tries, found out that a right click on highlighted files let me c&p... et voila!! Mission accomplished.

Probably should have added that I'm working on an "old" laptop... maybe 5-6 years old... that's losing it's mind... what I'm running takes up a lot of it's memory and it can sometime be REALLY SLOW!! It's kinda crawling now, so I know the cookie jars are full and will have to dump them.

Not a question of your being ungrateful, you were simply not aware of the individual steps needed. A quick reply to that effect and someone would have willingly provided those steps.

If you are of a nervous disposition regarding doing things on a computer you might find using only one forum for a subject a better choice. Why? Because with a computer there is generally more than one to achieve any given task. Using separate forums at the same time can be confusing for you and the helper at each forum is not aware you are searching for help in another arena. Just a thought. Glad you got your data saved successfully though ;~)
