USB Flash Drive For Photo Backup?

Howdy. I'm in the process of backing up a bunch of digital photos on a SanDisk multi GB USB flash drive. Seems I read somewhere that a certain amount of photo clarity is lost in the process whether it be on this or a CD. I only have family photos, scenic, etc., so would the loss be relevant in my case? Thanks, Gene

I have never noticed any loss personally. I have used both flash drive and cd and dvd.

I never noticed or heard of that before.

If these pictures are special to you may I recommend multi-copies over various media with a disk and a thumb drive at a minimum. The estimated life cycle of storage media is still in its infancy stage and are only approximations/estimates/guesses. No one really knows what the future may bring. So why not give yourself a little insurance by doing so.

You may consider free on-line storage also.

I think there's two issues at work with your comment mikie. The first, which many historians have spoken about, is that the lost habits of letter and diary writing mean that much less material will be available for historical analysis in the future. Email archives aren't as common as boxes stuffed with old letters, and email archives typically have much more worthless stuff in them. The second thing, the changes in storage media over time, I think isn't so much of a problem. There used to be lots of stuff stored on 8 and 5.25 inch floppy disks. They're not lost to the future, that worth keeping was migrated to later generations of storage media. Places like the Library of Congress and National Archives are digitizing many parts of their collections to protect the availability of their contents for the future. All that stuff gets rolled forward as technology changes.

The least expensive way to do with is to simply connect both computers to the same home network, share the folder(s) that contain the files she wants to keep, and simply copy the files from the old machine to the new. Certainly you could use a flash drive as well. You don't need a >10 GB drive to copy the data unless it's one big file. Just copy the first 100 files, then the second 100, etc. A 4 GB drive should be under $10 and 8 GB under $15. For occasional use, it really doesn't matter what drive you buy.

Take a look at the rather long article linked below, it may offer some help. When reading this take a closer look at the photo where he/she has the front connector plugs that fits on the motherboard and his hand showing. You see those 2 connectors off to the left? There really seems to be no place for those on some motherboard yet they need to be connected. There is no reason why there would be any loss. You are simply copying a file from one place to another. That's the same as someone saying that if you copy a word processing file onto a thumb drive you'll lose some of the words. Ain't gonna happen.

The only time you may get a loss of quality is when you save the picture into another format, or, of course, when you re-size it.
