USB drive compatability with older computers

I'm a newbie here, so please excuse me if I'm asking an old question-

I have a PII 266 with a lot of photographs -about 519 megabytes worth- stored on it and I'd like to move them onto a flash drive while I or a friend install a Linux OS.

Of course, most flash drives recommend newer operating systems than my W98SE, but if I buy a larger flash drive will I still be able to use it with Windows? Or should I just stick to the smaller drive that I know to be W98 compatabile? And will the flash drive work with the Linux OS?

Thanks- and sorry for such a basic question!
