can you give us more to go on, what exactly did he do? why did he think he was updating Norton? was this the Norton on your pc or was he trying to install a new Norton?

Was it something that popped up on the pc saying you had an infection? if so that could be one of the rogue infections that looks like it is an antivirus program.

I would first try to boot into safe mode and see if you can choose last known good configuration.
you did not tell us what version of windows so I will not try to give directions.

Usually Norton is set-up to automatically update in the background. Did he actually go into Norton to try to update, or was he responding to a pop-up message? If it was a pop-up, hopefully it was a legitimate message, rather than a bogus message from some sneaky malware or virus trying to get installed onto the computer.

Kudzu-Raven, thank you both so much for your replies. Somehow after a couple restarts it seems to be working OK. He says he thinks he responded to a genuine Norton pop-up, but who knows. We'll see how it works over the rest of the day. Again, I appreciate the time you took to try to help. I've gotten help here a few times and am most grateful for it.

I would do a virus scan and a malware scan or 2 just to be safe ..

To tell the truth, I really have no faith in "Nortons" as an antivirus program...to be on the safe side, I would also do an online virus scan at BitDefender, Housecall or Kapersky just to make sure

it sounds a bit worrisome to me since a pop up warning is exactly what the fake AV infections do and they look very legit, I too suggest running a full updated malwarebytes scan.

Just have to say that I have had Norton AV for nine years with no troubles at all except once on updating about five years ago--but never since.
