Norton automatic renewal

I have been getting the Norton automatic renewal for about five years, which runs about $70.00 each year. I know some of you do not like Norton, but it has worked for me, I believe. My question is should I renew, or get another protection. I have Superantispyware and Malwarebytes, both free versions. I have XP2, IE8.

I switched to free as soon as I started reading at this site. I use MS Security Essentials. It automatically updates and scans once a week. I like it better than any I have tried.

I'd keep Norton. As long as it's been running ok on your machine then Norton's not a problem, especially on XP because it's probably providing a firewall as well as spyware protection for you.

Jane, I have the free version, and I never tell it to scan. It has a screensaver that self-installs, and after my computer is idle for the time I have set for the screen saver to activate, it automatically starts scanning. The background is the shooting stars thingy, and a little box moves around recording the number of files scanned. When it is finished, it tells you, and the screen saver part just keeps on shooting stars at you. I don't even recall ever trying to configure anything about Avast, and it scans my incoming e-mails. I think I did check for it not to scan outgoing ones. You do have to register it, but that's free. I find it just sits down in the bottom tray and does its thing, and every morning shortly after I go online, a little box pops up and a male voice announces that it has updated. I find the interface of AVG rather clunky, so that's why I stopped using it, although I think it's also a fine AV program.

I would never ever have McAfee on my machines again after finally getting rid of it and the mess it made. Personally I use AVAST free and love it. You will need to use the Norton removal tool to get the Norton off your pc before you do the install of the new AV you select. Norton buries itself deep into the pc so can be a job to remove it. Here is a link to Corrine's blog with info about various removal tools and the links to the tools. Antivirus Product Removal Tools Using a program like free REVO uninstaller also does a good job of getting out all the left over bits. NO windows defender is not enough. Are you using the built in windows firewall? I assume since this is a new gateway it is a windows 7? Another free option for AV is the free MSE by Microsoft, I have never used it but many do and like it. avast! Free Antivirus Microsoft Security Essentials IF you have not yet added malwarebytes free then definitely do that and use it weekly to do a scan, above and beyond any AV you install. Also recommend installing spywareblaster, simply have to hit update once a week, no scans to do , just update then hit the enable all protection button and close it, it protects you while surfing. you will need to run the norton removal tool for your version of norton and take some extra removal steps since norton does not remove fully by using the add remove programs option. Download and run the Norton Removal Tool you can also get the free REVO uninstaller and run it in addition which should help remove any of the extra bits. Revo Uninstaller You may also need to go into your explorer to program files and see if you still find norton or symantec listed there and delete those files. I use AVAST free for Antivirus, superantispyware and malwarebytes free for antimalware, sypwareblaster free for added protection (no scans to do with it just hit update once a week then enable all protection button) Zone alarm pro as my firewall but zone alarm free is good just be sure not to get any of the included extras like toolbars etc they try to give you during install. I personally would not pay that kind of money for Norton.
I currently use AVAST free and like it, also very good is MSE by microsoft also free.

but that decision has to be one you make.

should you decide to get rid of Norton be sure you use a program like appremover to fully rid your pc of it before you put on any new AV program. Norton likes to leave a lot of bits and pieces behind.

If your Norton has the firewall with it you will either need to turn on the Windows firewall or use another stand alone firewall like zonealarm free.

Since you are still running xp sp2 and have not updated to sp3 you are no longer getting critical security updates since it has past it's support life. IF you went with sp3 you would get updates to windows for a few more years.

Using AppRemover

I just used it yesterday to clean up a friends laptop and it works great for removing both Norton and McAfee.

There is no need to pay that kind of money for Norton. If you search sites like Frys.com, buy.com, and Amazon.com over a couple of week period, you can usually find deals, often with rebates, where you can get Norton for cheap. For example, I just checked Frys and they have Norton Internet Security 2012, for up to 3 computers, and it is $5 after you send in for a $40 rebate.

I haven't paid more than $10 for mine. I always buy just the Antivirus. About a month before mine is due to expire, I watch for ads/rebates at the local bigbox stores. I think I've purchased at Staples the last few years.
