Which Norton Internet Security Should I Get?

It is time to re-new my Norton Internet Security. I have been VERY happy with this service, so I am not interested in changing software. However, I am unsure of which package to purchase this time. Could someone tell me if it is worth $20 more per year to go with the top option, versus the standard that I have always used. There is a middle option, but it is priced the same as the top. Many of us here use freeware: AVG and AdAware/Spybot being popular, oh yes, some firewalls too, I'm sill using just the XP firewall.

I say this without the benefit of a survey, or head count. In any case those using the freeware seem to be satisfied, not only with the price, but also with the protection.

I use all those programs, too. However, they do not stop big viruses from corrupting your computer.

I assume with the paid version you are getting automatic updates? Actually, I have both the free and pro versions each on a different computer. I updated both of them (manually) earlier this week after having updated on Jan 3 as well, but received no warning about lack of support for either free or pro versions as of yet. I'm not suggesting your information is wrong. Maybe they're just giving us a grace period of sorts before finally pulling the plug ?? Or perhaps mikie is right and it will only be the free version left unsupported ? I'll likely uninstall it if/when one or both versions loses support. Better to have loved and lost...... :-( Scott

Hello I'm from India :D No, UK, but trust me, get rid of Norton and if you have installed Zone Alarm get rid of it, too! and before uninstall them, be sure to stop their protection, otherwise a registry key in the regedit will remain on, and you won't be able to change anything.. sounds stupid, but could be like that.. good alternative free antiviruses could be avg (www.grisoft.cz) or avast (www.avast.com). If you paid for Norton it's good for 12 months. Did you register it when you installed it? If so go back on the Internet and recheck in using your password and email address that you used when you first registered it. I take it you have a Norton CD. If you didn't register it when you bought it,well Install and Register it. I think you have 15 day to register after Installing. If your 15 days have expired and you didn't registered it. Not sure what will work. Try deleting what's on your computer - Install it again - register it under a new email name that you use. I did this once when it wouldn't accept my first email name. Or get help. Don't pay for it again.

Thanks for your suggestions. Norton sites help buttons did not respond when I tried. To answer the question regarding version, the computer currently has the 2012 version and we were trying to install the updated 2013 version. The 2012 version is working again, however it will not do a live update and the 2013 version will not install. Our son is coming this weekend to fix the problem. What would senior citizens do without high tech children to bail them out even tho they may be in another city or state!! I would hire local computer help but our sons keep telling us not to. Krissie

Newhomebuilder, I would go with what you already have. Some of the other programs would be nice, but some you might not like, and probably would not be using. If you are in the market for a new firewall, I can recommend a free one called Comodo, which is excellent. I also use Norton anti virus, and right now am using the Corporate Version, which does not expire, but its not for everyone. Good Luck :-)Cat

While I am not recommending against Norton, I've had it myself, about 5 years ago, and McAfee too, a corporate license, I don't understand what mean the freeware doesn't protect against "big virus", if they don't I must not have had such an attack as you are worried about, and can't figure how I'm that lucky.

Zonealarm is the free firewall that I couldn't think of on my first response.

I use the Norton Internet Security Suite. I like the firewall and the Antivirus seems to work well. The AntiSpam feature never worked. They said it's because I used AdAware and Spybot. They said they are not compatible, therefore, I must get rid of them. I refused (I am very happy with them).
As a result, I will not renew this subscription when it expires. I will probably use MS One Care as I have it on my older machine and it seems to do a good job and it's cheaper.

Jane, That's a huge help to me!
I was getting ready to renew and thought I'd check here once more.

I love AdAware and Spybot, also. There is no reason for me to get the type that has the spyware, then. I have been very happy with the NIS base program, so I'll just renew what I have. It's been great at catching viruses!
