Norton Security ERROR 8920.223

Norton Security automatically downloaded the latest version on my computer and it works. Norton did not automatically download the latest version on my husband's computer.

My husband tried to download the latest version and I think messed things up since he got frustrated, confused, upset, etc.
He eventually got the old version back and it worked, now the old version does not work.

Today he tried again to download the latest version and finally got a message: ERROR # 8920.223 and also stated there was no automatic fix.

Please advise what his error means and what can we do to fix the problem. I Google Norton Security, got the website but when I click on buttons nothing happens.

Norton's own forums have threads on exactly this problem. Perhaps you should check there while waiting for someone here to make other suggestions...

I really must respond to all of you who have made such good suggestions, but I have a mountain of papers to grade, and parent conferences coming up. I am beginning to hate the word "issues". Yes, Ann, not only do the computer people use it, but so does everyone else - especially high school kids. They have issues with me because I am so hard. I can't find anywhere where it says on the box that Norton Antivirus 2009 has a firewall. But I read on another forum that this particular version does have a firewall inbound only. This is very confusing. If I do have a firewall from Norton then I need to shut off the Windows Firewall right? If so then how do I get rid of that red shield with the X in the middle of it? zone alarm is definitely much better than the firewall that comes with xp, as said it only stops traffic one direction, zone alarm free is just fine. after you have completely removed Norton then either Avast or AVG are the usual 2 free ones of choice, with some of the problems with the new AVG 8 many have gone with Avast instead. All computers should have spywareblaster on them and kept updated, it does not take any resources, also good by the same company and also free is spyware guard. Both by javacool. javacool software and for a very good free spyware protection/scanner you can get superantispyware. superantispyware Avast there on the left you will see topics for installation and how to use the registration number. Did you uninstall Norton before installing Avast? You're not supposed to have 2 anti virus programs on your computer as they will work against each other. I don't know if that will correct your problem or not.

Are you really talking about different versions (like Norton 2011 and Norton 2013) or just an out of the box version without today's update?

Older versions stop working at some point. Assuming you have a current and valid version to install, I'd try uninstalling and then reinstalling the software on the machine that's having trouble.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Norton sites help buttons did not respond when I tried.

To answer the question regarding version, the computer currently has the 2012 version and we were trying to install the updated 2013 version.

The 2012 version is working again, however it will not do a live update and the 2013 version will not install.

Our son is coming this weekend to fix the problem. What would senior citizens do without high tech children to bail them out even tho they may be in another city or state!! I would hire local computer help but our sons keep telling us not to.

Some programs will allow the installation of a new version on top of an existing installed older one, some won't. Some act quite odd when you try. I don't know how Norton works in this regard, I would think it would behave sensibly.

Otherwise, you could uninstall the old one before trying to install the new one. That should work, or can just wait for troop reinforcements to arrive!

Our son arrived, fixed the Norton Security problem, installed the 2013 version and gave 84 year old "Dad" instructions to not try upgrading anything again!!

Bless our kids! They are great!

Can't help but it seems one week norton downloaded the lastest version on my desktop and it wasn't until a week later that it came through on the laptop. I thought it was strange I didn't get them around the same day but I just waited and figured if after a week it didn't happen I would contact them but didn't have too.

When I have trouble with their program I have had great luck using their online chat from with in the program. So friendly and helpful and they can take control of the computer and fix the program if you goof up which I have done before with an update. Mary

Krissie as it seems your son does not live local you might suggest to him that he looks into Teamviewer. This is a free program that allows us to fix software issues from the comfort of our own homes no matter how far away the other computer is.

In my case I also use Skype so I can talk to the other person while working on their machine.

AV purveyors use the shotgun approach to distributing program upgrades through the on-board updating utility so as to spread out the demand. This is to to be confused with .dat file updates which are time-stamped and available to everyone on a daily basis.
