Best replacement for Norton

We're planning to get rid of the hog called Norton on our system. Tired of taking 10+ minutes to start up, etc.

We have a Dell Dimension XPS Gen 5, running XP V.2002 with Service Pack 2. The computer is a few years old.

We stopped using the Norton firewall a few days ago after downloading the free ZoneAlarm. We use Ad-Aware for spyware.

I've read about AVG in this forum and wondering if this is still recommended to replace Norton. Also read that we need to download a special tool from Symantec to completely delete Norton off our system.

The main problem is the amount of time it takes to boot up and open programs such as Word. We don't do any gaming, but I use photo editing/organizing tools. We've managed to avoid viruses so far.

Hubby is considering updating ZoneAlarm to one of the upgrade products -- but which one? The choices are a bit overwhelming and we just want to do the right thing in the right order.

Where to go from here?
