Ravencajun: Windows Security/AVG conflict

I hope you'll let me ask another question. I appreciate your help so much. I installed AVG and the other spyware/malware apps on my friend's computer today, but there is a conflict between AVG and Windows Security and I don't know how to resolve it.

I get the following:

"The Windows User Account is stopping unauthorized changes to your computer"

and

Security Center

AVG - off

Super Antispyware - on

Windows Defender - on

It won't let me turn on AVG.

Any help appreciated.

what AV did she have on this pc prior to your installing AVG? if it was Norton or McAfee did you use their specific removal tool to get rid of it totally and did you search through the pc to find any bits of the other AV and eliminate them? It is rare that simply doing the removal from Add Remove will get rid of all of an AV program and often that will cause errors and the inability to get the new AV running.

If you have done that i would disconnect from the internet, disable all other security programs including the windows firewall if it is enabled, superantispyware, windows defender and anything else, try AVG , you may have to remove it and do a new install and try it with every thing shut down. Another alternative is to do it in safe mode.

try those and see if that helps

if you want help from us then and then won't do what tasks are asked then there is no way we can help you. WE could send you to one of the support forums specific for clean up but you must run the scans and tasks that are asked for us to see what is on the machine if we don't know then there is no way to help clean it. If zep is asking you to run something you can rest assured it is NOT something to hurt you it is to see what you have lurking on the pc. There is a difference between antivirus programs and all the other things you mentioned. You can only have one Antivirus program running at a time you have MSE that is fine. You can have several other anti malware programs on the pc because they do not run till you start them up and run a scan you only do one at a time. Malwarebytes is great be sure you update it prior to running the full scan weekly, another is superantispyware also update prior to running full scan. The other thing you should have is spywareblaster you just open it weekly and hit the update button then hit enable all protection so the shield turns green that is it it sits there and does it's thing. I would also suggest putting WOT on your browsers so you are warned if a site has a bad reputation or is dangerous. Use this tool regularly to check for updates to other things on your pc , the majority of infections today are happening because of not updating your flash, java, adobe etc programs they must be updated and so must windows so do all those updates. Secunia Online Software Inspector (OSI) run online virus scans occasionally to see if they find something your MSE missed ESETÃ¯Â¿Â½s Free Online Scanner You want to quarantine because if it happens to be something that was needed then you can go back and get it, when they are in quarantine you need not worry about them just leave them alone. If you would feel better going to a support forum for help in examining what you are dealing with here is the link, you will need to register there and post your question in this forum area. OH man NO is right definitely never try to get rid of windows xp sp2!!! Carol please any time you are thinking of getting any type of program come to one of these forums or any good computer forum and ask first!! There are many many bad programs out there that are just hoping someone will come along and give them money for programs that do nothing or even worse they try to sell you a program just so they can then have your credit card info. I would not have advised you to get the one you got either it is linked to a lot of bad websites, I doubt you will get any assistance from them either. we can give you links to very good programs that are free that will do a good job. The one I gave you for the superantispyware is a very good program that is super easy to use and it is free I would advise you to download that one and use it, I even gave you a link to a step by step tutorial you can print out so you can follow it along as you install and use it. AND absolutely NEVER ever buy or pay money for anything that just pops up on your screen when you are on the internet those are all BAD!! Just how did you come to find the delux shield that you did buy???

AVG Security took over Google home page

It appears that it is gone. I used the Remover instructions you gave me RC on the Google home page and never saw AVG when I clicked on the the AVG toolbar options/advance. Nor did I see it in IE. The only option for search providers was Google listed as default/enabled/not available. I saw it in Firefox and removed it. I have only uploaded that program a few months back but never used it. I removed the Google toolbar on the culprit Google home page that was with the AVG toolbar and the AVG disappeared. Then I brought back Google. I rebooted and it is still gone and not listed as a program.I am holding my breath as it is a backward way of following the directions though I tried carefully to do that. grandms.Your thought about the company called "On call 25/8" has been running through my mind since they came out and created a pw to get into Windows last week. They had my computer a couple of months ago when I couldn't find a graphic device and did a thorough look. There was something wrong about the guys paying forward pitch that bothered me. For $750 I could get so many hours of future help in my home. He also would take care of installing my new router and Apple apps. There are other On Call 25/8 companies and wonder if anyone has heard of them. Raven thanks again for standing by as I made my way through these instructions. I hope this is the end. This afternoon I read all the online complaints about AVG - some going back 3 years. I have an external back up device that may have AVG on it now.Maybe I should throw it away My feeling is that computers are not here to stay. Thank you very much for your advice. I now realize that I have gotten in over my head. :(

I talked to my friend and I'll go back tomorrow and remove the programs I installed so I get her back to where she was before I offered to "help". I thought I was doing a good deed. I've learned my lesson...that a little knowledge is dangerous. Sheesh.

I installed SUPERAntiSpyware, SpywareBlaster 4.1, Malwarebytes'Anti-malware and AVG? Can I simply use the uninstall command in Add/Remove to take them off? I don't want to do anything bad to her computer.

I did remove Norton using Add/Remove. Shall I get and use the appropriate year's removal tool to get any bits and pieces that might be left?

Again, thank you and I'm *really* in awe of your expertise now!

wait you don't have to take those off just turn them off while you try to get AVG to install and work. They are all fine good programs and should be on the pc.

I would bet some of Norton may still be hanging in there causing the problem, so definitely use their removal tool for the version of Norton that she had that should clear up most of it. then go to right click start then explore in the tree> program files see if there is still a folder for Norton if so delete the entire Norton folder, anything you see labeled Norton or Symantec should go.

You did not do anything wrong sometimes things just have conflicts and especially with Norton. So do the removal of that then just turn off those programs and try AVG again. The reason I suggest using the method in the AVG faq is that it keeps it from installing some of the extras that have caused problems on some pcs. It is a much slimmer version.

You are doing a good deed! You are helping someone ,that is always a good thing.

As I said it may require doing an add remove on AVG then reinstalling it, that is why it should be disconnected from the internet since you will be with out protection while AVG is not working.

If AVG continues to fail you could try AVAST free, I use it on one of my pcs.

Your message says Windows Defender is turned "ON". Did you try turning it off and then starting AVG? I don't believe you can have both turned on.

Don't give up that easily. Helping others with problems is by far the best way to know computers. Sure, you can stick your head in a book but hands on or helping at sites like this gives you so much more. Keep at it, you are no doubt doing a fine job, just a little speed bump has slowed you LOL.

I have Vista Ultimate. I am running AVG and Superantispyware AND windows defender. There is no conflict.
In fact Windows Defender notified me that no AV program was installed, when I first started up my PC with Vista.
I think Ravencajan hit the nail on the head- you have some Norton leftovers. Download AVG and save it to your desktop, clean up Norton remnants and then install AVG.

Thank you, everyone, for your kind words. If this was my computer I'd jump in...as a matter of fact, I did...and had already installed all the above programs. But, I'd feel terrible if I messed something upon someone else's.

Camp..I did try to turn off Win Defender at the screen I mentioned above but it didn't change the setting. I came home last night and googled it and do see how to do it now.

If I get brave and decide to try it, I'll let you know. Otherwise, you'll know I chickened out. :)

I printed out the posts so that when my friend's brother comes on Saturday, he can see what I've done and what needs to be done. I can't thank all of you enough.

I think once all those Norton bits are gone for good things will go much better. I hear these kinds of problems a lot from people who had Norton prior to trying to install a new AV it is a very intrusive program.

I just recently took my free McAfee off one of my xp boxes and I spent quite a bit of time doing a very clean removal, including using the McAfee removal tool after using Add Remove, then I scoured the pc for anything left behind and still found stuff.
