Recommend your counter depth side by side fridge please!
Comments (2)I just bought a new one a month ago. I was almost crazy looking at different ones and going over measurements and prices. I looked at the KA and also at the Whirlpool and GE thinking I would get the Whirlpool. Lowes would have to order it so I happened to check this place closer to me, an independent guy that was a Maytag dealer and since they are now Whirlpool he could get me one but he also sold Frigidaire. He had one in stock--just what I needed and it was $400 less than Lowes(for the same model) plus free delivery and haul away of theold one. This ref. makes more ice than any I have ever had.(also has setting for extra ice if needed). It has an air filter inside to keep out odors, sliding, spillproof shelves, also an elevator shelf rolls up/down plus adjustables in the door. Has a meat drawer that you can even set to keep the meat at 32 if need be-this is in the ref. side. The freezer has door shelves and tilt out racks plus baskets in the freezer plus it holds frozen pizza's(Digorno size). This guy also services so I figured I could get him quick if need be--hope not needed! I talked to a couple of servicers before and they said they are all about the same now days. I did go through several on line repair forums reading about fridges and there wasn't that many bad things about Frigidaire. Did read that a few years ago they had some problems but got those worked out now so I hope so. I would think a KA would be good also. Check the repair forums and see if you see many people write in about KA. Hope this helps and good luck shopping. For the money I couldn't have gotten more features than I did with the Frigidaire....See Moreneed large side-by-side fridge: ge vs. whirlpool vs. samsung?
Comments (2)I don't see anybody jumping in, so maybe I can help get a conversation started for you. GE had pretty significant reliability and parts problems with its fridges when it started contracting out (outsourcing), but it has brought much of its production back to the US a few years ago. CR's survey data shows that GE is now no less (and no more) reliable than most other brands of SxS models. In our area, GE also cut back on the number of dealers it works with and seems to be concentrating on the highest-volume retailers and big-box stores. Some friends bought one of the large new GE SxS models a month or so ago -- I think it is the one rated for 29 cut. ft. -- and say they are very pleased with its features and capacity. Something to else to bear in mind is that rated capacity is often overstated. Supposedly 25 to 28 cu. ft. SxS fridges sometimes turn out to have no more than 18 cu. ft. of actual capacity. Capacity is affected by the size of the through-the-door ice and water dispensers and some of the larger capacity models have two ice makers. If memory serves, CR rated the Whirlpool and Samsung SxS models as having more usable capacity than other brands with similar capacity claims. Samsung models have separate evaporators for the freezer and fridge compartments. Not the same as having completely separate compressors and cooling systems (ala Sub Zero) but still something of a marketing leg up because of the theoretical advantages. When I was fridge shopping, it seemed that the jury was still out on whether the separate evaporators made much practical difference. Doesn't the biggest Samsung SxS have an external display screen that connects to the internet or you smart phone or displays photos or something? Strikes me one more thing to fail. cascade to other circuitry and interfere with the primary functions. FWIW, some friend have had a Samsung 26 cu. ft. SxS (no screens) for three years with no problems. They make heavy use of the external dispensers. Comments (18)Just to answer about the side wall, I would definitely frame the fridge in with at least a panel. We just did that in our space (upon recommendations from this forum). There is a post somewhere with some nice pics. If I knew how to post pics, I would show you mine. One side of the fridge is against a wall and the other has a panel coming all the way out to the doors of the fridge. So it has the appearance of a counter depth when it really isn't. That also allows for the above fridge cabinet to be a little deeper if you want. And it totally makes the fridge look nicely finished. I really didn't want the black side of my stainless fridge showing. I think it's goofy that they even make the sides black! If you miss being able to hang things with magnets, just mount a nice bulletin board or dry erase board there. And on that note, I've seen some cool slim cabinet message centers and that might be a perfect space for that for your kitchen. Just a slim cabinet that would open on the side of the fridge and could have little key hooks, a bulletin board, note pad, etc. I'm attaching a link to the one I'm thinking of. If your cabinets are custom, you could design one that's bigger for the space. Or the broom closet idea is great! If you could build in a little thin slide out broom closet that could easily be removed in the future without damaging the cabinets, that could leave open the possibility of a bigger fridge someday without major demo. I also agree with skypathway too that it looks like you could maybe switch the location of the fridge and those other cabinets and get the fridge closer to the rest of the triangle and give yourself a landing place which is really nice to have for loading and unloading stuff. Good luck! Here is a link that might be useful: Kitchen Message Center Cabinet...See Moreneed help, new side by side fridge, freezer door doesn't open all
Comments (15)thanks for the input guys! i had pondered the idea of moving that whole wall of cabinets to the right, but realized in doing that the stove would move. i can only move stove a couple of inches to the right (make that 2'), and still be able to fit my waist inside the corner without hip-checking the stove every time. What i really need to be able to completely open the freezer door (past the first point where the door holds it self open) as i can the refrigerator door. That requires 5 3/8'. I have 3/4' i can gain just by tightening up the 12' base cabinet closer to the stove, add another 2' by shifting all the cabinets to the right, but i'm still short 2 1/2'. These cabinets are 14 yrs old, i know i cannot get doors for them anymore, i've tried both lowe's and home desperate, so i'm thinking if i can find a carpenter to make them 9', and move everything down to the right, i might be able to hit it! I cannot modify the opening as the last poster was correct, it's a 8' tall patio door. Find a pic of how far (little actually) the door opens (while resting on the glass of the patio door) Here is a link that might be useful:...See MoreFori
