HP Printer questions

I have decided to buy another printer as the one I have is way more than I need, have done a search online HP have some "single function" printers that will take care of all I need, price range $50 to $100, if someone could glace over the printers for me and give an opinion, I read the pros and cons and get confused.

Gillian,,, I have an in expensive printer / scanner from Walmart,,,its an HP F4140,,,it is easy to use and all I need,,,hope this helps,,

I have the HP 6940,purchsed about three years ago, and I love it. It is simplicity itself, and is not an ink hog. On the rare occasions that I get a paper jam, it's no problem to get it out It also uses just the two cartidges, instead of all the separate colors.

Here's my latest attempt. Uninstalled the software everywhere I could find it. Did an Error Check and then a defrag. Rebooted. Downloaded the software again. Disconnected the printer and reconnected it accoriding to instructions on the Quck Start poster that came with my printer. After installation, I did a manual test page, which printed out fine. I made sure the printer is listed as the default. But when I tried yet again to print from a computer file, yet again nothing happened. If I had a cd, I don't now. That's strange because I have the cd for my scanner,which is older than my printer. I also have cd's that came with my first computer, years ago. But no printer cd. There is still an explanation in front of the Printer Port in the DM, and the printer is still not listed there. The link you gave, grandms, didn't help, unfortunately. I will go to the hp site to locate the live person when I have the time to devote to it. I've spent so much time on this, my RL is slipping, and I have to catch up. Thanks to everyone who has tried so hard to help me. If any more ideas occur to anyone, just post it. I'll be checking back here, as I always do. I love this site. Dee

Owbist is correct. I have not connected the PC in any form or fashion to the printer (or vice-versa). I have not tried to run the printer's installation CD on the PC yet. Windows has no idea that the printer exists and has no way to communicate with it. There is no wired or wireless communication between them. I am literally at the beginning. Powered the unit and that was it... The set up or initialization of the printer requires connecting the electric wire to the wall, then to the printer and turning the printer 'on'. No CD. No wires connected to the PC. Once it had power, I pressed the Power Button. Once turned 'on' for the very first time, the printer then asked questions. The first question was 'which language to use', and I fatfingered that one. As soon as I did that, the set up instructions that were being displayed on the printer's control panel or console turned into Chinese. Attempts to correct that by pressing here and there in the printer console did not improve/correct things. Since the console's screen looks different than it used to when the languages were listed, my clicking of buttons in the console moved forward the set up to other questions but I have no idea what the current display in Chinese means.... So to summarize, my problem is literally with the printer. There is no link up between the printer and my PC yet; I never got far enough with the printer initialization steps. The printer's control panel (I call it a console) is about 1" by 1.5", and is located on the printer itself). It is touch sensitive like a smaller smartphone screen. As such, it is impossible to use my PC to copy/paste anything. And messing with Windows would accomplish nothing in the printer. ;o(

The crash was eveil and took place in stages. First, I was told there wasn't enough virtual memory. The the screen/programs kept freezing and I had to use the start button on the tower to shut down the session in order to get out of the frozen screen. Things got very slow and when I ran MS security Essentials it removed several files but the problems persisted. Finally, when I rebooted I didn't have a router and last, the modem stopped working. I took the tower to a local repair shop and he was very curt when he called me and said I had a terrible virus. He was about to wipe clean the hard drive and I askede if I could come in and save some files. His reply was that he didn't have time to wait for me. I couldn't stand going without email and internet so I just let him do his thing. Oh, he also told me to get a new router and he had never seen my old router. I did as I was told and went to Staples where a salesman advised me against getting the super-duper wireless model router because my ISP, TDS is notoriously slow (boy do I agree with that!) and even if I got a very good router I still would never be able to stream movies. The repairman gave me back the tower with a version of XP slightly different from my original (no, I don't know what I had, only that the screen and icons work a little differently), Internet Explorer 8 and Outlook Express. I immediately had problems setting up OE even thgough my ISP confirmed I had used all the correct settings. I had bought a new printer with wireless capabilities and it worked only as a wireless. Then--the router stopped working!!! When the man from Staples came he sat down and opened a few programs and punched in changes while he was able to talk to me. He found that my laptop had a virus but I no longer use it because I prefer my netbook. He told me he found several settings that were incorrect even though I never changed them. He was quite a whiz, polite, patient and I am pleased I now know someone local who will come to my house if I need him. He said Staples will have some good sales around Christmas and recommended HP. One of my previous desktops was HP and I was always satisfied with the way it worked. He carefully told me he thought I would find what I want and get a better deal with an HP when I said I was considering a Dell. Lastly, he recommended I get 6G of RAM, 500 or more on a hard drive, and a quad core processor. I am about to put out a general question on this forum asking what I can expect if I pay for a quad core vs. a dual core. Before he left he asked if I wanted him to he would set me up with a gmail account. I told him TDS's POP3 and SMTP is gmail and I was going to let them set me up with their gmail for my two email addys. My mail is @ TDS, not @ gmail, but the server uses gmail. Witz- you are almost right, except there's nothing listed in control panel for this all-in-one except the photography portion. However, I discovered quite by accident that if I go into a wordfile and click File > Print > Properties, a tab comes up that says Printer Services. And if you click on that, it says "Open HP toolbox" !!!!!!! It gave me exactly what I needed. Except for the knife, gun, or bazooka I'm going to use on my husband for ***not*** telling me he'd put in an ancient cartridge--that would have imediately alerted me to the fact that the red ink was probably dried up. Soon as we put in a fresh new one, it printed just fine. and having found the tool box, I could run the tests to make sure all was as it should be. We bought an HP Deskjet D1320 last year for around $30. Ink refills are small (works well since ink dries up when not used), but nicely priced at $12 and $15. It's all we need and has been quite dependable.

So why not ignore the parts of your current printer you do not need and use the rest? There is not much of a market for used printers, unless you already have a buyer of course. Buying another while you have a useable one seems odd. Watch for sales, just a couple of weeks ago there were some Canons on sale for under $40. No idea where now but it was a great deal at the time and with the depressed economy bargains will pop up occasionally.

There are 83 here, all between $50 and $100. Notice the 'Reviews'? click on any row of stars to read the reports of actual users to aid your search. I personally like HP or Canon. In a thread a few weeks ago a couple of users spoke highly of recent Lexmarks so perhaps they have smartened up somwhat.

Well, I can see that the confusion probably hasn't abated as members try to help and it probably won't as the options and opinions are going to be endless.

It really might be better if you narrowed your search to two or three models of interest were a defined member's opinion could be shared. Of course, the final decision as always will be yours.

My DD and SIL have just left going to town told them to pick me up a printer at wal-mart, I just want to get rid of this thing after tracking down the "1706 error" message I kept getting to the printer, if I have to uninstall and reinstall to try correct the problem decided to get one that has far less "stuff" that I never have used.

gillian41 if this were me I'd start uninstalling all the current (hp printer software) that is on the machine, Then run the windows (installer clean up utility), you can google that, then run ccleaner, then reboot make sure everything is ok before you start adding more hardware and software to this machine.

I am sorry DA, for starting a new thread about my printer will remember that advice in the future.
I installed an HP 2545 printer and it does everything I need so much faster than the other one.
The only thing I have noticed is when I turn the computer on it gets to the "Welcome" then the screen goes blue with the curser in the middle and a good 60 seconds before the desktop arrives, I have cleaned the prefetch out, ran ccleaner and defrag, is this a windows problem? or something that is normal I know it was quicker before I installed the printer.

It's probably a lot of stuff that the install put in your startup. HP likes to give too much 'assistance' with support and updating. You can safely type 'msconfig' without quotes in the Run line (click Start and then Run to get the Run line). Next, click on the startup tab and deselect anything starting with the letters HP, then click Apply and Ok and answer Restart on the next dialog box. After Windows restarts, a dialog box will come up...just check inside 'Don't Show This Message Again or Open System Configuration Utility' and you are done. When you need to update the HP software, you will have to do so manually (although I never update mine and it works just fine).

Well the printer saga is over, just had a tech in for 2hrs everything is working fine and he checked the whole computer out, all I know is he took alot of junk that was not needed in here out, he really likes Avast and Malwarebytes he took Ccleaner out and installed ATF.Cleaner it was a very interesting 2hrs and only cost $65.00.

I would suggest you to take hp 40a. It only ranges from $15-20. Its good quality really stands out.
